That cool choir part in Phase 2 is actually part of Malenia's theme, and it catches you off guard if you've played the game and remember the song (which is hard not to in Malenia's case).
This track is heavily underrated in my opinion. It's so profound and glorious, I haven't heard such a slow and yet impactful opening to a second phase in a long time.
@@sooooooooooooon The whole dlc's ost has references to the base game's ost. - Scadutree Avatar is a remix of Erdtree Avatar - Death Knight has parts of Erdtree Knights - Saint of the Bud referencing Goddess of Rot - Messmer the Impaler has a very similar beat in phase 1 to Radagon of the Golden Order - Promised Consort phase 1 is a remix of Starscourge Radahn's phase 2 - The Twin Moon Knight has some parts very similar to Rellana, Queen of the Full Moon - Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame has parts of the Merchant theme hidden among the chaos This tells me that they knew that the characters and world they created have left a massive impact to the players and so they chose to be so self-referencial to themselves. I wish more Soulsborne themes did this kind of stuff. I always find it really cool when I hear a theme and think "Wait, I recognise that!". Especially when I don't notice it until way later. In now 7 games, theyhave only done that a coule times though. Fake-Allant, Radagon, SoC, Laurence, Ceaseless and I think that's pretty much it. You'd think they'd do it more, like connecting Nashandra to Manus' theme; or Metyr and Elden Beast, or somtehing like that.
We don't get much lore for this boss but I feel like her music does a really good job of telling her story. It's a tragedy - sadness turning into anger, gentleness giving way to force. That's the feelings I get from it as a layman, anyway.
One of if not the most tragic themes in the series, absolutely gorgeous strings and choir and that slower ace suits her more 'relaxed' fighting style. Everyone's gonna mention it, but that phase 2 bit with the home chords uses the melody from Malenia's phase 2 theme (although I think it's in a different key and might use different chords since that other theme is a lot more grand and intimidating, but idk music theory like that so don't quote me). This both serves as a nice connection since both have been influenced by the Scarlet Rot and that 'sense of prophecy' may be a representation of how, to keep things vague, the events that took place here will have knock on consequences for Marika's child.
The first phase of this track is used in the DLC's cinematic story trailer, during the portrayal of Messmer's purge, and it fit so well with the visuals and story being told. For that, it's always felt like another Messmer theme to me, telling the tale of his tragic life.
going to love the video Edit: I loved the video At 7:05 there is a little melody sung by a single female singer which also exists in the main game. It was in version 1.0 at the Margit bossfight but actually belongs to a very infamous boss (which‘s name I am not going to name because I don‘t want to spoiler you :) ). It this song explains a bit of missing lore, which is something that I love about Elden Ring‘s OST (this also exists in the Lichdragon Fortissax OST, where the violin and chello duett resembles Fortissax and Godwyn, as I am interpreting it). GREAT OST
But yeah the track is amazing although out of all the remembrance boss themes it get beat by lion, messmers bitch, messmer, Romania, sunshine, haybale and gaymen
A thing I love about this OST that enforces even more it’s tragic feeling is the fact it was used in the story trailer, where we see the massacre of the hornsent. With messmer and his army making a genocide. There are a lot of lore elements that make this trailer extra tragic 1-The dancing lions, the apex representation of hornsent culture, fighting for their people and dying. I could imagine hornsent children who saw the dancing lions as heroes, seeing them fight and die by messmer. 2-In the trailer, we can see Romina doing her vow to the rot goddess on the ground after her church was burned by messmer. 3-Messmer probably didn’t want to commit this massacre, in the great library, we can see messmer saved and stored Hornsent culture on his fortress, meaning he admired them at some point and wanted to preserve their culture. In the end Messmer is another victim of Marika, who just wanted to be loved. A lot of tragic things coming from this OST.
Although I agree that Messmer's heart wasn't fully in on the genocide, it was his fire knights that asked him to preserve the specimens. I think Fire Knight Hilde in particular. Salza too defended the ruins of Rauh from being burned. Super tragic all around since it seemed a lot of people didn't want to commit all these atrocities.
You can learn so much about a boss in these games from the music. Her lore is very vague and open to interpretation, more than most, but I feel like watching videos like this helps reinforce and elaborate on her Character in the lore through the music. Incredibly tragic figure. you are needed in the greater soulsborne lore community, Davi!
"I have a feeling this boss might be something big, heavy and sluggish". Great video as always, severall seriously good predictions. Romina, the Saint of the Bud is in some aspects very beautiful, agile and graceful in the way she fights, moves, and looks. Yet she is in other ways quite disturbing, spreads the accursed scarlet rot, and is absolutely deadly. So it makes sense the tempo is so slow because of her more horrifying aspects. But it sure is ironic lol.
Same composer too. If that’s intentional, I think it’s probably meant to signify Romina’s fate being tied to the flames of Messmer when he burnt her and her people. And even if that’s not intentional, it’s still cool to tie Messmer and Romina’s fate together in the burning flames. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s intentional though, given how much care was put into the narrative connections of the music this time round
The organ in this track alone makes it a favorite of mine out of the fromsoft catalogue Tsukasa Saihito (might've misspelled) did wonderfully. You should react to Divine Beast Dancing Lion next.
this boss music reminds me a lot of ds3 especially for the phase 1 with how dark it can be sometimes overall i do love romina's fight especially after i mastered her
7:04 this part tell us she became another thing and that thing is about god of rot , thats why this part like malenia melody , and this OST made my tears fall with her pic from the trailer , thnx Davi for this breackdown❤ my best OST in the top
Edit: You know what? I would LOVE for you to revisit your old guesses after you've played the game through to see how you feel about the elements of the songs, see if you can guess why elements might be in there or what they might suggest. Can't think of a better YT creator to follow these songs with, especially since you focus on the song first and later see things for yourself :) I wouldn't say heavy per se and certainly not slow, given what I saw in game, but more a whirling dance? There is definitely some tragedy in there, and it's reminiscent of certain themes for a good reason I think
This was my absolute favourite boss in the game, and at least top 10 all time. Her character design is just incredible. It's the first time I've experienced coming out of a boss fight 100% exhilarated. Everything about her is PERFECT.
much like with renalla's leitmotif in rellana's ost, there's also the outer god of rot leitmotif in this theme from malenia's ost which obv makes a lot of sense if you know who the saint of the bud is
Thanks for the analysis, Davi! I've been looking forward to this since it's one of my favorite tracks from SotE alongside Messmer's and the Dancing Lion's. Perfect timing too, as I'm about to fight Romina for the first time myself. Don't know if you're going to do more SotE music, but if you are I'd like to humbly request the Putrescent Knight track. It's boss music with a harp!🎶
Amazing timing, I just reached her in game. Davi, if you're willing, there's one more interesting track in the dlc. I think you should give a listen to "scadutree avatar"
I guess Davi hasn't heard Malenia's track. There's so much more quality music to dive into. I'm glad he mentioned the emphasis puts on the solos in ER's soundtrack representing a wider cast of characters. I'm glad to see fellow commentors praising Tree's track. I felt it was underrated upon release but I'm glad to see Tree get the love it deserves.
Romina, saint of the bud. when Messmer purdged the land of shadows with his fire, Romina's church was burned to the ground. only Romina survived and her rememberance states... "After the church was burned to the ground, Romina discovered a twisted divine element, which she weaved into the baleful scarlet rot. Perhaps then, the buds might find somewhere to gain purchase once more, within the scorched remains." Romina is a Saint to the outer god of Rot, and the rot dwells within her body, tranforming her into an insect hybrid. her theme actually has some sections that pull from another being who is host to the Scarlet Rot. Melania, Blade of Miquella both second phases have very similar melodies showing the connection between the two. while one has embraced the Rot and has given it home, the other denounces it and chases away its children.
I havent fully watched the video so unsure if you realised but you recognise phase 1 probably becausw it was the music used during messmer's purge in the story trailer
I think Malenia (as goddess of rot) will be one day the new divinity ruler in the lands between. Not sure, but she is the only divinity with no need of consort, it might be a important thing. She only needs three times to become a goddess. A goddess of rot someday will rot too. No ruler might be forever. Seeing Romina was like "that idea of yours might be my pray too". One day Malenia will wake up, as her mother Marika, a being of cure, but with the Rot to make everything dies and one day reborn again... True anew.
