I just had this talk with my buddy the other night. His wife bought a stilleto, and then returned it because she thought it was illegal. Was happy to educate them about the legality of switchblades in our state. No restrictions whatsoever, carry whatever you want. She bought the knife again, and I sold them one of my OTFs the same night. They were geeking out over my knife collection over dinner, I brought out a ton of stuff for them to check out. I think I might have even got them into the hobby. Time will tell!

I used to live in Minnesota glad I left. Law enforcement cannot do anything about OTFs and you have a second amendment constitutionally protected right to Cary them though most of them are junk because dust and lint get inside them and muck them up.
If a person of color is using the knife, there will always be a made up reason the knife is illegal. Until recently my state prohibited several types of blade shapes without actually defining those shapes anywhere in law so that it could be selectively enforced. In NYC, even a Victorinox Tinker is a "gravity knife" because it's affected by gravity.

Louisiana 2024: push the 'button' and the blade is released = Switchblade (illegal). However, since an OTF blade is only released after moving the blade (about an 8th of an inch") to release it, it is not considered a switchblade and is legal. I showed my OTF to an ex-officer and he nearly 'soiled' himself declaring it to be illegal. Since then I have shown it to several active officers who said it was legal. Now I carry a photo of the relevant knife law in my phone - just in case.
Ironically I had a cheap knockoff of George Washington 's Barlow but it was 6 inches long pearl handle folder I bought at the Spokane , WA Expo 74 , worlds fair.
They are hard to find and expensive, they originated in Germany made for pilots and paratroopers, the blade slides in and out through gravity instead of the aid of a spring.
I live in North Carolina where you can have a switchblade knife on your own property but once you leave your property you can be put in prison for 2 years. Depends on where you're at. However, most states consider them a deadly weapon by nature. So any state that doesn't have constitutional carry laws you would be required to get a concealed carry license or "open carry" the knife. To each his own, I'm a knife enthusiast to the core...but, I never liked OTF's, or Stilleto type switch blades...old fashioned preferences on my part I guess. Even these newer blade grinds and shapes , ( tantos, compound grinds, fancy , exotic blades , etc) just don't grab my attention.

I don't think balisong origins are up for debate. They were originally French, where it was brought to other countries like the Phillipines, and Benchmade (previously Pacific Cutlery) brought them up to modern USA standards in the 80s. Now there are a myriad of production, semi-production, and custom makers who have brought them 2 steps forward again with even more iterative improvements. Now there are a ton of perfectly machined, well balanced flippers with all of the aesthetic, customization, and function that you'd expect from all of the high end folders that the non-balisong people would appreciate but are otherwise unaware of because of how the balisong niche is bifurcated.
If a certain group of people cause more violent crime with weapons, is it racist to notice and make laws to fix it? Makes more sense to me than the modern mentality. Just because it is offensive, doesn't mean its not true..

Depends on where you're at. However, most states consider them a deadly weapon by nature. So any state that doesn't have constitutional carry laws you would be required to get a concealed carry license or "open carry" the knife. The second amendment is the privilege, immunity (RIGHT)of every single individual natural born or naturalized American citizen in the united states of America.
This isn't even a valid question since the highest law of the land (U.S. Constitution) states people have the right to bear arms and doesn't state which type of arms. Knifes of any kind are legal period nationwide due to this because all other laws are null and void as they can not supersede the constitution as the constitution is the highest law of the land, period, hard stop. Same goes for guns, etc. Just because a law is made doesn't mean it is itself legal or enforceable. They may enforce it but that will just mean with the right lawyer, you become rich.

To each his own, I'm a knife enthusiast to the core...but, I never liked OTF's, or Stilleto type switch blades...old fashioned preferences on my part I guess. Even these newer blade grinds and shapes , ( tantos, compound grinds, fancy , exotic blades , etc) just don't grab my attention.
That's why I'm eventually getting a Buck 112 automatic.

I don't think balisong origins are up for debate. They were originally French, where it was brought to other countries like the Phillipines, and Benchmade (previously Pacific Cutlery) brought them up to modern USA standards in the 80s. Now there are a myriad of production, semi-production, and custom makers who have brought them 2 steps forward again with even more iterative improvements. Now there are a ton of perfectly machined, well balanced flippers with all of the aesthetic, customization, and function that you'd expect from all of the high end folders that the non-balisong people would appreciate but are otherwise unaware of because of how the balisong niche is bifurcated.
If a certain group of people cause more violent crime with weapons, is it racist to notice and make laws to fix it? Makes more sense to me than the modern mentality. Just because it is offensive, doesn't mean its not true..
