The by-pass hose actually re-circulates the coolant back into the block not the top of the radiator so I would say that it is more for stopping airlocks than anything else, so if one is careful on filling , not having a by-pass may not be a problem especiallyif you get a thermostat with one of those little vents in it.

Great video! I learned a few things I did not know!

Running without a bypass won't cause higher pressure as the pump has no water to pump in. What it can do is cause cavitation by locally dropping the water pressure below boiling point. It's just a centrifugal impeller though, it works by drawing water in on the feedpipe side from the radiator. If it can't do that it'll draw water in wherever it can - between the impeller and the pump housing.

A really helpful video thank you! but whos doing all the sniffing?

Fine with the video but someone should have explained early on that the Arden cross flow head is not a normal A series head!

so it sounds like a bad idea for road cars to have no bypass but have the thermostat fitted? Don't thermostats already have a tiny hole to avoid catastrophic pressure buildup in the head?

Most engines don't have a by-pass at all.

What about no bypass but open circle through the heater matrix. Wouldn't that be a workaround for a Engine without the bypass?

      Yes you could do that.

That's what was done with the Metro to eliminate the bypass hose. However, a Metro heater bypasses air around the matrix instead of having a valve to close off water flow, like the Mini does.
It's one reason why later Minis used an inline heater valve, a bypass can be routed through hoses before it.

hi is that allowed in the mini seven racing or seven s?.....or even mighty minis
