Have loved Telemann´s work for many years. He injected a little humor into his work at times. But he was a seriously great composer. I really like the 3rd movement of this work in particular. Also love what he does here from 0:46 through 1:06. This is a great performance, by the way.
This chaps Workload was incredible!! But luckily his facility and abilities could rise constantly to just about every occasion }}ONLY Now are we beginning to grasp his amazing and versatile "Leistungen" Achievements... The CPO Label is and will be eternally richly laden with treasures!!
According to one of my teachers Telemann had like 3 desks all pushed together so he could work on multiple pieces at the same time and allow the ink to dry while rotating through.
That’s actually accurate to some composers. If you look up sleep cycles of composers, you’ll find some really only slept a few hours each day (or night 😉)
Definitely has Telemann's stamp and calibre of Wit, and may have snubbed Mattheson a bit, who took great exception at the multitude of Animals in the utterly delightful Spring Cantata : Alles redet itzt und singet! Don't forget too}}} the fab dialogue, really funny from the Alster-Echo Suite (TWV55:F11) Frogs & Crows!! Which I always read as Pompous men and whining Women/wives?? Humour of a special musical kind! Musik always full of that sparkling Esprit!
This piece has not been published. There are three original manuscripts in Germany. There are about 5 recordings that have been made, and the recording artists have transcribed their parts from the original manuscript. I will be performing this piece next month, and had to get a pdf copy from a German violinist who had transcribed it in order to prepare for it. Fun piece to play!
Is the manuscript available anywhere online? Like, maybe a library's digitised it? I'd love to examine/analyse it, maybe even transcribe and see if I could make a performing version available on IMSLP... Is your PDF just of the violin part? Sorry, it's killing me that I can't see the score!
Cathal Twomey I did extensive research and could not find a manuscript anywhere online. I would suggest either contacting the libraries in Germany and requesting that they make it available, or contacting the performing artists directly to see if you can find what you need. Frustrating- I really wish this piece would be published so that it can be enjoyed by many!!
Kristen Burk I'll get contacting libraries and conductors then, thanks for your help. If and when I get a performing edition completed, I'll put it straight on IMSLP. As you say, it should be available to be enjoyed by many, and while an amateur, public domain performing edition isn't quite the same as a high quality publication, it would be a start. Thank you again, and have fun playing this marvellous concerto.
Cathal Twomey Are you still wanting a copy of this concerto? I got permission from the musician who gave it to me to pass it along. If interested, send me your email address and I can email you a copy.
Kristen Burk Hi Kristen, yes I'm definitely still interested. Please do send me a copy of the concerto, thank you so much! My email address is cathaltwomey93@gmail.com. Sorry I'm late in replying, I was away from home for the last week and didn't have full Internet access.
I heard this song for the first time many months ago, and have since yearned to play it. I can play some of it just by listening, but I want to learn the whole thing! I've looked for the sheet music everywhere online, and I can't find it... not for free, nor for sale. Can somebody help me? It's such a fun piece :/
I cant imagine that stuff is notated, I suspect the players are just going along with the frog impersonation and adding a bit of creativity to the bare A string sound. Did you manage to get a copy of the score? I'm actually quite curious to see what it looks like on the page.
I did manage to get a copy. It's mostly double stopping with the open A string almost always involved. The passages are marked 'Relings solo' so the scoops must be embellishments, as you say.
Was it a scan of the actual manuscript you got? If so, I'll be able to type set it for you if that's any help, unless you have perform-able parts already?
That's very kind of you, but it's a performance edition, supplied by someone who'd played the piece. Quite a good edition, too. I'd still like to see the manuscript at some point but this is something of a personal curiosity; I usually study English repertoire so cannot see myself having an excuse to examine Telemann documents in the near future. But following along with, and examining, the score was still very helpful.
you can get it on sheet music plus www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/telemann-frog-concerto-for-solo-violin-and-strings-twv-51-a4-digital-sheet-music/20683140?ac=1
Baroque violins have a different construction than modern ones. They have shorter necks, and lower bridges. The bass bar is in a different place too but that isn't relevent to tuning. That just makes the high notes louder than than the low ones on modern string instruments. With gut strings, raising the pitch would increase the likelyhood of broken strings, and the increased tension may over time damage the instrument. Yes, modern violinists use Stradivari and Guaneri instruments, but they have actually been rebuilt to modern configurations.
Actually there are various pitches throughout history and in the baroque period and A415 is a compromise. So important though to keep thinking and discovering and not be stuck in equal tempement without realising there are many ways to play "in tune" or out and covering it all up with heavy vibrato.
12 Minutes and 54 Seconds of absolute brilliance

Thank you for the music...and the perfectly matched photo!
It's amazing how prolific some of these baroque composers were. It's as if they only took brief naps between compositions.

Frog gang must rise up
The frogs had a great thing going, until drugs, fast living and sudden success did them in, To bad,

Any idea where I could see the manuscript for this piece online? It's really interesting, I'd love to see how he notates all those scoopy effects.
I cant imagine that stuff is notated, I suspect the players are just going along with the frog impersonation and adding a bit of creativity to the bare A string sound. Did you manage to get a copy of the score? I'm actually quite curious to see what it looks like on the page.

The manuscript is kept at the Fürstlich zu Bentheim-Tecklenburgische Musikbibliothek but it hasn't been digitalised yet.

Why do they always have to persist that Baroque tune?

Because it is a baroque tune
Actually there are various pitches throughout history and in the baroque period and A415 is a compromise. So important though to keep thinking and discovering and not be stuck in equal tempement without realising there are many ways to play "in tune" or out and covering it all up with heavy vibrato.
Sad actually. Learning accent with a boiled potato in your mouth with no one to pull it off or take it out for years to come...
