Yes, it was, recorded some time in the 1950s (in the days before stereo became routine). Most of Novaes' active repertoire was recorded on that label during this period. She made a terrific Chopin-Liszt-Debussy LP for the American Decca label in the early '60s and 2 LPs for Vanguard in later 1960s, and nothing after that. The Decca album disappeared many years ago, but many of the Vox LPs and both the Vanguard LPs (Chopin and Beethoven) have been reissued on CD.

Novaes was one of the greatest without a doubt. Her interpretations were very individual and very poetic. Her tone was one of the most beautiful I ever heard, and I'd put her up there with Cortot as one of the very finest Chopin pianists of all time. I heard her in NY in 1968 near the end of her career. She was still regal as ever, with a ravishing sound.

I love Novaes. I treasure her collection that includes the nocturnes and etudes. Her Nocturne cm opus 48 #1 is gorgeous.

This is absolutely mindblowing! Perhaps the best 3rd Sonata ever.
She sounds as if she were a combination of Dinu Lipatti, Clara Haskil and Arthur Rubinstein.

Chopin, pelo meu desconhecimento mais profundo de música erudita, não é dos meus prediletos compositores.
Mas sempre é MUITO MELHOR do que ligar o rádio. Sempre.

How profoundly beautiful. This great artist played from her soul. Thank you for posting this treasure! I wonder if any videos of her exist?

Very few. There's a concert from 1940 and one from 1969, and a few documentaries towards the end of her life. She recorded extensively.

This interpretation is every so beautiful. To me the only pianist to play it with similar individuality, with attention to the music would be María João Pires.
The renown of so many great artistis of yesteryear suffer because of recording technique of that era.

I am sure you are right , also today the pianists who enter the conservatoiry as finished pianists. But the influence they get in Paris are very important for the following career. The repertory, the touch of the piano which gets more precise.... les nouances.....

She got her technique from a pupil of chopin.... yes she is part of the big french tradition around Chopin and Liszt like the unforgettable Marguerite Long or Eliane Richepin....

Dear NOUCHINI: Agreed! Marvellous comment! The pathetic souls who listen to Glenn Gould's butchery of this majestic work here on YT and rave about it as if they discovered the wheel should hear the Novaes recording! (Sorry I can't reply in French, but I've forgotten a lot of it--use or lose!)
