I'm an American. Former Army infantry and avid camper. I own a British bivy bag (In DPM pattern) and I prefer it over the American Bivy bag. It's roomier and has no zippers to fail. It's absolutely bomb proof and has never let me down. Well done, Brits!
Cheers buddy
Canadian Army bivy is similarly designed to the Brit bivy and is great.
That said, US Marine Corps Improved Bivy looks outstanding.
It's very good
You could sleep in a River in a Bivi Bag!
@timhannah4 depends on the bag I find
The British one is bigger around the shoulders so that you can have a brew up in it before bed time.
Lol, yes
I’m a retired American combat engineer and I prefer the British bivy simply because it’s zipper less. I like to keep my sleeping bag inside as one piece and roll them together as well.
Nice
If a zip can go wrong it will at the worst time. Don't ask me how I know. If raining that bad on British one just turn it over ,so hooded bit goes over your head. Rain just runs off.
Good idea
Works for midges too
Sure does
Ho Wooly.
Nice review.
In my British bivvy bag,I changed the flat lace draw cord for 3mm Para cord.
It closes easier.
All the best.
Cheers buddy, I got the two tarps over the weekend, I put the bushcraft one up , I'll post some photos in the community section
@@RedBranchBushcraft cool. You went for the lomo and the blue builders tarp?
I've been thinking of doing this to mine, I'm grateful to hear that it's worth doing- now I know it's worth it I'll pull my finger out and do it.
I have always just left my sleeping bag inside my bivy bag so that it is protected against any spills or wet weather and my sleep system is ready to go at moments notice. Only thing you have to do is ensure you air you sleeping bag once in a while. Also not convinced with compression bags as if your sleeping bag is in your bivy you can just pack it straight into you pack and then pack around it. Great comparison
Cheers buddy, most times I do the same
Good day to you!
I am HONDA Cross Cub senior rider from Japan.
Enjoying touring , camping and video editing.
It is great Bivy Bag video !
So nice !
Have a nice day my friend !!
Excellent stuff buddy
Great comparison. I have both, mss works well with the intended bags but sometimes the zips are a faff to do up again. The Brit bag just simplicity. Horses for courses. I had a mountain equipment one that was like the Brit one but with a zip at the top like the US, best of both and I regret selling it!
Very cool
There are multiple versions of the US bivvy. Both of mine were the same though. I need to dig my other one out and see if it needs repairs or not. I hope all is getting back to normal. Stay frosty.
I have the British one. It is a faff getting into it but once you know what you're doing it becomes easier I.E sleeping bag in the bivvy and then step into both and pull them up around you before lying on your pad/mat. Obviously, if you put your sleeping pad/mat in it then it's back to slightly faffing around. However, there is loooooaaadddssssss of room and it's completely waterproof. I really love my bivvy and it goes everywhere with me on my little adventures.
they are great pieces of gear
had a British one for years used it winter and other seasons and fantastic keeps you dry and very breathable
Well made gear
I have them both and they are very good, the zippy one is better for hammock use.
Nice, easier to get in and out of, as a night time pee pee r it's the best for me
I still have one of the original geen ones. I traded for it when I spent a month in England in 89. It is superior to the current American army issue bivvy bag. There is no zipper to fail or leak, and it is quite a bit lighter in weight. It was an absolute game changer for me. I never got wet in it. Didn't even get condensation in it. It is absolutely bomb proof. Put a poncho liner or two in it depending on temperature. I have several of american ones. If I'm tent camping I prefer the American one because it's easier to get in, and out of. But if I'm just surviving in a bivvy bag with a poncho liner. The British version is better. It has never failed me.
Excellent stuff
British army bags are a modular sleep system and is part of 3 bags.
1 is the outer cover, 2 is the intermediate, and 3 is the full system used in extream cold conditions.
One goes inside the other, you use what you need at any give time.
I was not british army but Navy we used something simular, it being mostly blue, and kept us warm this would be level 2. You would not need much else most of the time it worked fine.
Excellent stuff
I modded one of my british army bags, cut the hood off, (I like my head out the bag) and also had a center zip put on to ease getting in and out.
I use that one if I want a tarp cover as well.
Sounds good
I absolutely love my bivy bags! I know I have said it before but one day I need to grab one or two of the British version to add to the rotation, not that I actually need another bivy.....
Lol, we never "need" one
I can get you a few of the British Army Bivy Bags,
Shoot me a message if you still need any.
You can never have too much kit,as long as you don't have to carry it all.
Lolooo
@@flatmoon6359 amen!
Big up for the bomb proof zipperless English version, awesome
Good kit
I have got both and like them both. UK one is simple (nothing that can fail) The US one is more user friendly for access with the zip.
Completely agree, I do like the USA one better though
Yup 👍
I use both too.
I like the US bivy when using the patrol bag inside. Never let me down.
The British bag is fool proof. No zips just crawl in. If injured it’s easy to use.
Heavy rain, flip it over and use the bottom flap as a head shelter. No breathing through a snorkel!
Nice one buddy
I have both as well. Aside from being fail proof, I love that you can turn the British one over and use the hood to keep out the rain. I combine that with a US surplus cot mosquito net and I can sleep on the ground bug free if I really need to. I like them both a lot, but the Brit one is pretty much fail proof since it doesn’t have zippers
@1mataleo1 excellent stuff
I have the Dutch one and it’s great but these two look good too.
All great gear
Well.... I like them both!!
Me to
Evening Wooly, do you put any type of wax on your bivvy bags for protection? I've got two British army bivvy bags in DPM had them years and don't know whether to treat them or just leave them as is.
I'd clean them in nixwax tec wash the use a nixwax reproofer, it will bring them back to new. All goretex materiel needs to be washed and kept clean for it to work properly
@@RedBranchBushcraft thanks for the info Wooly
No problem buddy
Are they showing signs of leakage or are the taped seals getting loose?
Not that I've noticed
You measured it seam to seam worth wise but not length wise, not that I care. The reason the American one is big is it's to fit those other bags from the modular system. There is also an "improved bivvy" from the American Military Surplus. I think it is officially the USMC 3 season bivvy cover idk the nsn offhand, anyways it is not part of the mss system and it is narrow like the British one. That said the USMC one is way diff than both the British and army mss ones. It has bug mesh and I'snt even gortex. The idea is the mesh provides ventilation I think. You should check it out. These all have their own niche use case but also all would work in a general sense. The USMC one is a unique design, not better per se just interesting and def some advantages and disadvantages
i have the usmc one, ive done a few videos on it , its Gore-Tex just not branded Gore-Tex, its excellent. i did the exact same comparison between it and the mmss
What groundsheet do you have in de video?
I think it's a danish canvas tarp
Like both! Good and informative vid. But as far as I know there are different sizes. Did you compare the same sizes?
The UK is one size I'm not sure about the usa
You should have got in each one. Tested that. I’m new here, like what I see.
Cheers man, I think I have covered it in previous videos, I'll check
@@RedBranchBushcraft found it. Like I said, new to your channel. I have the same usgi Bivy, works great for winter camping.
I've the full system, just waiting for a chance to test it! Should be a usgi camp out soon, Alice pack, USMC tarp , MRE meals
Anyone know if a 3.5inch pad would fit in either of these? With a person and a sleeping bag? It would be a mummy shaped 25x72. Love this video, I've watched it and a few others of yours several times. Cheers!
These are big , I slept in them in my thermarest neo air no bother
Didn't you have a video about just the British bivy? I can't find it. Thinking you were inside in the video?
@phillipgardner3297 yes , I'm nearly sure I have
If you could choose only one ? American or british army? I got the older olive british army one and The American bivibag and also the Dutch army hooped bivi and if i choose its the Dutch with mozzy net and hoop and easy access with zipper.
American every time, the side entry and the room in it are great
I know you like various army's gear.. I recently picked up a French army bivvy bag on ebay for about 60€.. It has a left hand zip which is why I went for it..
It is made by FECSA, who as you know makes both the Dutch hooped bivvy bag, and the British army sleep system, that I also have...
It has a funky hood, stuff bag on it, that I cut off as it's just dead weight and serves no purpose as a hood and I prefer just to stick it in a far lighter dry bag...
Over all though it is far easier to get into than the Brit bag, far cheaper than the Carinthia.. and so far has kept me warm dry with zero condensation...
Cool, do you have any links?
As I said.. I cut off the hood/stuff bag bit, which is also in goretex type material with straps and fastex buckles. Can't see the point in it.. as it's the wrong shape for a hood and far too big and heavy as a stuff bag... takes 300g off the over all weight..
Us is one seems better but it’s 3/4 times the price , question is , is it worth that I see problems getting in and out of the British one
thats my major issue with it
I like your videos...hi from the big apple
Cheers buddy, greetings from Ireland
How come you closed the british bivy quick . Have you done some work on it .
I haven't done anything too it, you mean using the draw cord?
Find it a right hard work when in it can you think of any way to make it alot easy
Mine has always been easy, you could replace the rope for a smaller diameter
Which one is more comfortable? Easier to get in and such
American
@@RedBranchBushcraft day in, day out, the American system is better. Unfortunately during your comparison, you forgot to complete your test.
oh no, what did i forget?
@@RedBranchBushcraft the strategy for getting in and out of the bags. Not being a smart arse but the zipper side is good for me as an auld fella. I don't think it's a fair comparison 😕
I was highlighting the similarities and difference between the two , if you look back I have a video on only the mmss, where I get into it, I'm the same , zip is so much easier
And what if it’s start raining?
Bring a tarp but their very waterproof
@@RedBranchBushcraft tarp ads extra weight plus some time you never know when will rain! I think Carinthia bivy is better design
I never could get on with a hooped bivy
And the winner is Jerven Fjellduken Thermo /extrem :-)
Lolololo, you said it buddy
Silly me, I thought the “Revaluation war” and all battles between the U.S. and Britain ended ended in 1783! In a victory for America!😂🤣😂🤣
Never happened
@@WoolysWorld I guess that is why we only have an elusion of freedom here, and much less there!
You forget the War of 1812.
@@turtlewolfpack6061 can’t remember them all!😅😂😅
American bag is 3 or 4 once heavier
Not a lot in it
US bivi comes in two sizes
Atb with them .
Ah man! I didn't know that
@@RedBranchBushcraft No problem pal best of luck with them .
Cheers buddy
I hear there are different types of the US maybe a reproduction that’s not as breathable not sure if to take the punt as they are selling for a lot in the UK.
@@ashab1 no they come in a couple of different sizes i have two here know from tenners us the smaller one still in its bag paid 60 pound for it of ebay you can oick the up if your lucky cheap
English army bivvy? Us scottish soldiers are like wtf lol. Good video all the same.x
Lol, sorry
Talky Scotty
Cheers buddy
We've already seen it, and the bloody French won it!! 😂😂
The US woodland camo looks canny.
Lol it, my favorite camo
@@RedBranchBushcraft Rhodesian brush stroke for me, but I like this to.
It seems 1950-1980 was the golden age of human eye camo.
Forevermore it'll just be microsoft art doc prints!
Lol, I like the Rhodesian stuff to, like the Greek lizard camo
Yeah... are the British a superpower tho?
Not anymore
sheesh... get the the GD point!
Thanks Kimo
And the winer is.... Dutch Army Hooped Bivi Bag 😉
Lol, if only I had one
@@RedBranchBushcraft you should try it someday. It has side ziper like us bivi and space to put 50 liter backpack inside plus mesh to prevent bugs. You can full close it during rain and it will not lay on face than. So it is like small tent. Sry for my English. Greatings from Poland..
Greetings from Ireland, I've seen them , they look great, the Belgian ones are made by carinthia, and they have cool camo
@@RedBranchBushcraft i have one maid by Fecsa (whatever is this company ;) it is same like Caryntia besides Caryntia use gore tex and Fecsa ducht army Air-Permeable Laminate (again whatever is it)
It's the same thing, gore Tex is a brand name , Gore is the company, that's why there are so many "Tex" waterproof linings out ther
TRUMP!!!!
Cheers buddy
Hang on mate...One is genuine , one looks cheap fake . The US is not genuine ?????? Reason I ask is goarmy dont sell the genuine one
I didn't get it from go army, my buddy sent it too me from the states. And I think go army do get the real ones in the odd time
@@RedBranchBushcraft They are good , the Miltec one crap . Having used the UK one "In anger" . I always refer to them as coffins . They are hard work to get out of quick and if you have a rifle with you a joke ! The US and Dutch M90 is a lot better to be able to "Burst out " quickly .
Agree completely, that's why I love my USMC improved bivy
@@carforumwanker yep ..the m90 KL bivy is great and a lot of space....but you have to put a zip in it....
You lost my attention after 10 seconds.
Thanks Dave
I think your curly furry friend is planning on getting in there with yku.thanks for the jnfo, and stay safe and lucky.maddogdom.West cork
Cheers Dominic , happy new year from Armagh
