  • Did you know that Ray Charles could improvise in the style of Charlie parker on alto saxophone? Although his embouchure sound just a bit underdeveloped, these are some serious bebop skills considered it was a side project.

Did you know Ray Charles could play alto sax like this? It was recorded on a Brazilian tv show in 1963. You can clearly hear that he listened to Bird imo. Some implicit influences, and some fairly straight forward quotes. How many do you count? Hope you enjoyed this. And ,are there other famous artists that play sax (well) as a side thingy you know of? Let me know!
(I know about Bill Clinton, Dolly Parton, David Bowie and Van Morrison, although I never really enjoyed this latter one his playing tbh)

Some not musically educated person gave me a dislike when I said "try Hermeto Pascoal", above.
Let me clarify just one point:
Hermeto Pascoal is one of most genial musicians who was ever born in Brazil. In the World, as well, without any doubts. Beetween his friends were Miles Davis and Paco de Lucia, and many others. His real pitch gave him the ability to learn any musical instrument. His main are acordion, piano and acoustic guitar. But he play any. Soprano Sax, Tenor Sax. For example. Try the album "Sax e aplausos", recorded at Montreux Jazz Festival.
Yea, I say again, try Hermeto Pascoal. And if you dislike it, whatever. Bye!

Oh yea I knew Ray played Alto at the Famous New Port Jazz Show back in 1959 I think the year. During this time he was famous for all those Blues songs.
In this show Ray had David "Fathead" Newman and Tina Brooks playing Tenor Sax. Both were very great artist on the Tenor.
Yes, Ray was a "Genius" at what he did. I miss him so much. I think David "Fathead" was the longest liver out of all the band members.

So very, very good!! What a terrific blend of what they called hard bop and bebop, filling in the gap between Cannonball Adderley and Charlie Parker light no one else could. Obviously, Ray Charles was a genius -- one of a kind. Everything he touched was golden. He had a novel way of articulating notes on that horn, sometimes “tonguing them in an intentionally "sloppy way" as he launched into one curvaceous line after another hitting all the right notes in the chord extensions. And the big band arrangement was true to form -- just riffing away with those short repetitive statements in call and response exchanges. The inventors of this art form, arrangers Don Redman and Fletcher Henderson, would be proud! Wow!

What is easiest to learn? Drums, and guitar. Learn drums, take that rhythm and learn guitar. Take that theory and rhythm and now it's easier to learn piano. I had no idea he could play at all, let alone to this standard..Obviously there were better sax players even in his own band but still...When did he have the time? What a genius.

@@SharpElevenMusic Was there ever a live album of the "Soul Brothers session?

As far as I could find, no. And as it was described, it seemed to be just a one time studio session for fun for the both of them

@@SharpElevenMusic It was my feeling as well. Some back story regarding this LP ,my Aunt Louise was a big time Ray Charles fan. She was not a fan of bop, she was a teenager, so she gave me because I got a record player for Christmas. She gave me that album, and Ramsey Lewis Gentlemen Of Jazz, and my Great Aunt gave me some Benny Goodman 45's , and my mother gave me a Duke Ellington 7in LP.

Atlantic Records released 2 albums of Ray & Bags- " Soul Meeting" & "Soul Brothers". Ray had been playing alto live since the early 50s & his main influence on the alto was also Bird's as well- the great alto bandleader Buster Smith. That great 50s combo band of Ray's his remains one of the best ' jazz' bands of the era. Ray would sit in on alto with the band live for several numbers before even starting his set. When I saw him in 1996, he played alto on a couple of numbers.
