To be fair, going out onto the planet with no helmets and suits was a massive logical oversight on the crew's part, even if the atmosphere were breathable.
I know right? it's really stupid for a group of scientists to ditch their suits and helmets on alien planet, knowing that deadly pathogens that humans don't have immunity against are out there.

I mean this is after Prometheus, and in Prometheus they had bioscanners that read the atmosphere and scanned for toxins/pathogens so I’m pretty sure they based their decision off those scans. They just didn’t show this in the movie.

I can’t really get on board with Walter being beaten by David. Sure, David has been around longer, but it’s not like he’s got a lot of combat experience. I feel like the newer Walter would have won.
And he's a newer model less prone to being knocked out and David was also just a head last time we saw him, there's no way he could have made a stronger body than Walter

But even that explanation doesn't hold water, because Walter being newer means those weaknesses could easily have been resolved with newer model designs.

It's complicated, but long story short the classic xenomorph existed before prometheus. David created something similar, but it's not the same kind from the original movies. We know they're different because, they look different, their life cycle is a bit different, and the biggest evidence is the mural of the xenomorph on the juggernaut in Prometheus

David successfully fooling the survivors into thinking he's Walter bugs me. At that point if I was Daniels, and if I knew one of the two identical androids was not only evil, but also manipulative and clever, I would kill the survivor ASAP just to be safe

And after you killed the robot, what? Wait several years to wake up the rest of the colonists, since there's no robot to put you cryogenic sleep, you would have to keep the ship ok, to make sure no malfunction happens and spend several year ALONE in space. Doesn't sound like a good plan now, right?

@@_LunarDragon considering that the other option is to probably die of starvation (We don't know if they go food since the robot is the one awake), go crazy because of the isolation (god knows how many years in space with nothing to do) face up with a problem on the ship that you cannot fix (since the robot is the one programmed to deal with the ship, I highly doubt they would have a manual with everything about the ship, but even if it has, what if it's something only a robot could do?) etc, etc, etc that might go wrong with you and/or the ship, making the changes of total catastrophe higher and higher with every scenario, actively putting our fates and the colonists in certain danger, yes, I kinda think that is the better option
10:00 okay but can we appreciate the seamless, one-shot masterpiece that the full scene is? Not to mention one actor performing the same-ish character with wildly different personas, psyches and mannerisms. Plus the music is a reference to the Prometheus score.
Fun fact: in the prologue video The Last Supper, James Franco’s character actually reveals to be kind of sick, and he actually says he’s *burning up* Cheeky little foreshadowing from Mr. Scott, I thought it was a nice touch to those who watched those clips that never got to be part of the movie
I actually find it interesting that the first chest burster was a small version of the Xenomorph, because I can presume that they evolve differently overtime.
The xenomorph we see in Covenant isn't actually the same species as the one we know from past movies. David created something similar, but we know the classic xenomorph was around before this because of the mural of the xenomorph on the juggernaut in Prometheus

Fucking hell I hate people like you. I'm tired of people acting like this movie is actually bad. If you think this is bad then you have never seen a bad movie.

It wants to have a pseudo intellectual tone, wich is cemented on many allegories to biblic passages, and maybe some "paradise lost" feels (the creation rebels against its creator) wich is not that original, and Michael Fassbender's perfomance helps to sell it a bit (he does the heavy lifting for sure here) but it doesnt compensate for its formulaic nature, and comes as kind of pretentious, and its an idea that has already been done, and done better. Blade runner and Jurassic Park, for example, one centered in the idea of identity and self-awareness, and the other in man not being able to control "nature". The CGI in the aliens looks kind of bad, all characters safe for David are stupid and/or generic and/or plain bland, and the actors playing them dont sell it either. The plot is engaged after stupid acts and decisions. Its not a"bad" movie, but sure as hell its not a "good" one either. And i just listed a couple of arguments to support that. After Prometheus (wicht IS a bad movie, with quality production and some good actors but with such atrocius writing that its just bad) the goodwill of fans was nonexistent, and i think people just expects so much more of Ridley. These two movies feel uninspired, unnecesary cashgrabs to be honest. Take care

I love the idea of having a religious character in a futuristic world. It's fascinating and very realistic characterization you never see. I didn't see this movie, so it doesn't really look like they did too much with it, but still very interesting.
I find it surprising. Religion is dying off in developed countries as the 'God of the gaps' gets smaller and smaller. Cults on the other hand will probably survive in different forms. Which is all religion is anyway. I don't know who said it but the formula is: Cult + Time = Religion

It's official, as I sit here with my Dead Meat logo tee on at work, I have 100% watched every Kill Count to date. Discovered these like 2-3 weeks ago and fell in love with the channel.
thing is they aren't, since the original xenos are found on an engineer ship in the first movie, which crashed on that planet centuries if not a millennia before prometheus and covenant, I honestly think Ridley Scott has no fucking idea what his doing anymore since the timeline makes no bloody sense

Also, Prometheus WAS originally going to be set on LV-426 in the original script (which is WAY better than the movie we got) but it was changed because Ridley Scott, being the moron he is, butted heads with the wirer over making it a direct prequel.
I know I'm a year and change late to this discussion, but we shouldn't forget Annalee Call (Winona Ryder's character) from Alien Resurrection. I know she's second-gen, but she's still a significant synthetic character.
I think it's the fact that Dr. shaw died thqt pissed off the critics. They think this is a damn fairytale who has lots of plot armor for the protagonists.

Tbh, I hope that the last movie in the trilogy is actually about the colony on LV-426, the place where an actual Xenomorph Queen was formed and Newt was the sole survivor. The way the original Aliens presented the Colony in utter chaos and the bodies trapped in the Hive gives food to imagination.
Although it probably doesn't count in Dead Meat's Kill Count they mention many of the embryos didn't survive that solar event in the beginning of the movie.
I don't mean to make James seem like a bad guy for not mentioning embryos. I know his exception rules are to make his and his team's job easier, but I thought there might be viewers who might be interested if any of the embryos mention in the end (when David included xenomorph embryos to the storage) were affected by the solar flare. Plus also before the solar flare it was shown Water removing dead embryos before the flare hit, so even before the flare hit it was clear not all the embryos originally stored might have survived the trip to that point.
13:24 In the OG alien movies if you look closely at the chest bursters they have little arms and stuff, I think they were just limited by the technology of their time back in the 70s/80s, so IMO I think this new baby alien looks pretty cool
I’ll say this: Ridley is respecting his original story. From what happens in this movie, David’s experiments are making species close to Xenomorphs, but not quite, hence no chest burst, and all the other neomorph, etc. species. By the end of the movie it is referenced that he might have created the definitive version
Actually David just progressed something the Engineers had regressed. The black goo in the jars is just weaponized mutagen derived from Xenomorphs. Its why everything infected by the goo takes a Xenomorph like form. just like how Xenomorphs forms are determined but what sort of creature a face-hugger impregnates. In my opinion David is actually slowing down the natural progress that the goo would take with his experiments because insane beings (and David is clearly insane) don't often make logical experimental decisions. Other evidence that David isn't "creating" anything is that the Engineers were shown to have Xenomorph eggs on one of their ship in the first Alien and that ship was recognized as being thousands of years old judging by the Engineer in that ship was fossilized
It depends on how we value canonicity. If the Predator movies are canon, which we know are, then it means David is trying to REcreate the Xenomorphs rather than being the one who created them (since we know that they were fighting with The Predators in ancient Egypt times)

As someone in grad school, just because you’re a scientist doesn’t make you a good decision maker. Know a lot of really smart folks in their field who I’m surprised have survived as long as they have with their lack of common sense and extremely under developed world views. These characters seem very believable from my experience.
Naw the Prometheus crew were actively making insanely stupid decisions. Other than Captain Oram sticking his face into an egg and not attempting to subdue or injure David, their behavior in this one didn’t make me frustrated like Prometheus did 😂
David's still got to mix himself with the alien; you'll see that in the final film. It's kind of obvious and plays nicely to Geiger's design, as in there's no mech part yet, just bio.
The xenomorph in alien is much more mechanical looking. While it doesnt make any sense that the face hugger could adapt from a synthetic, it makes sense for the story
Only thing that pissed me off about this movie, is how they killed off Shaw. I loved her in the Prometheus. And this movie was so much better than The Predator 2018, my gosh.
Funfact: The Neomorphs are actually somewhat of a albino xenomorph, the first ACTUAL thing that comes out the mouth and back of the colonist is a bloodburster, in some scene clips taken out of the movie, refering them as throat or backbursters.

Both movies where good but in this universe it’s all about the xenomorph as it should be no one really cares about the engineers it’s all about the creature.
I love the tiny xenomorph so much. I like how its tissues are all translucent and stuff. This movie had a lot of flaws but at the same time the good parts are so good.

The biggest sin of this movie is killing James Franco, other then that I actually like all the philosophical stuff and even the new aliens, wish it was a better movie as a whole tho
I want new things to spice things up, but I still want it to feel like an Alien movie if that makes more sense. Some philosophical commentary or subtext is fine as long as the xenomorph ultimately remains the star of the show. Not so much the engineers or the existentialism of the androids or trilobites or whatevers. Also characters with half a brain would be nice.

Dr. Shaw was such a well built character. She was the only character I could see standing up to David or dealing with the Xenomorph threat. But nah she doesn't get a single line in this movie. It makes me think that they looked at the intended script at the end of Prometheus and said 'Scrap it' were starting over with the bare-minimum plot that makes this movie make any sense. David's a cool villain, but he was never challenged in this film.
My headcanon is that the engineers made the Xenos as a bio weapon and David became enthralled by them. He tried to recreate them but didn't know the exact formula or decided to make some changes to make a "better" version. That's why the chest burster is so different and resembles more of a neomorph because he started with the black goo and the fungal spores.
People going onto new "earth like" planets and not taking standard hazmat precautions always ruins these films for me. I just cant see someone with a science based history being dumb enough to go to another planet without protection.
Seriously. The plot only advanced because the characters had to be idiots who didn't think to take precautions. At least in _Prometheus_ they started off with their helmets on... and they were already planning on venturing there. Here, they didn't even know anything when they step foot on it and literally no one brings up suiting up as a safety measure. That they all died/become alien hosts is a testament to the notion of survival of the fittest.
My friend and I still joke about that scene. "Stick your face is in this egg." "Why should I trust you? You're deranged." "Have some faith." "Well, OK."
@NH808 No matter how habitable a planet is, you don't know what kind of bacteria or viruses could be there. In general, max protection when exploring unknown locations is a must for the safety of the explorers
Protomorphs aren't xenomorphs. They're Davids replica version of a xenomorph which is funny that ridley scott also made a movie adaptation about replicas and androids. And you can tell as protomorphs act more like animals meanwhile xenos rely more on stealth and tactics like in the originals.
Ridley Scott has said in an interview that we won't see the xenomorph we know until the third prequel movie. That's why it's a deacon in Prometheus and a protomorph in Covenant. Ridley knows what he's doing.

It wants to have a pseudo intellectual tone, wich is cemented on many allegories to biblic passages, and maybe some "paradise lost" feels (the creation rebels against its creator) wich is not that original, and Michael Fassbender's perfomance helps to sell it a bit (he does the heavy lifting for sure here) but it doesnt compensate for its formulaic nature, and comes as kind of pretentious, and its an idea that has already been done, and done better. Blade runner and Jurassic Park, for example, one centered in the idea of identity and self-awareness, and the other in man not being able to control "nature".
The CGI in the aliens looks kind of bad, all characters safe for David are stupid and/or generic and/or plain bland, and the actors playing them dont sell it either. The plot is engaged after stupid acts and decisions.
Its not a"bad" movie, but sure as hell its not a "good" one either. And i just listed a couple of arguments to support that.
After Prometheus (wicht IS a bad movie, with quality production and some good actors but with such atrocius writing that its just bad) the goodwill of fans was nonexistent, and i think people just expects so much more of Ridley. These two movies feel uninspired, unnecesary cashgrabs to be honest.

I love the idea of having a religious character in a futuristic world. It's fascinating and very realistic characterization you never see. I didn't see this movie, so it doesn't really look like they did too much with it, but still very interesting.
You never see? It was one of the narrative centres of Prometheus, lifted wholesale and transplanted into this.
It doesn't sound all that rare to me if I am being honest.

I think that implies a lot more models were made in between David and Walter that we simply don't see

I don't mean to make James seem like a bad guy for not mentioning embryos. I know his exception rules are to make his and his team's job easier, but I thought there might be viewers who might be interested if any of the embryos mention in the end (when David included xenomorph embryos to the storage) were affected by the solar flare. Plus also before the solar flare it was shown Water removing dead embryos before the flare hit, so even before the flare hit it was clear not all the embryos originally stored might have survived the trip to that point.

I’ll say this: Ridley is respecting his original story. From what happens in this movie, David’s experiments are making species close to Xenomorphs, but not quite, hence no chest burst, and all the other neomorph, etc. species. By the end of the movie it is referenced that he might have created the definitive version

Actually David just progressed something the Engineers had regressed. The black goo in the jars is just weaponized mutagen derived from Xenomorphs. Its why everything infected by the goo takes a Xenomorph like form. just like how Xenomorphs forms are determined but what sort of creature a face-hugger impregnates. In my opinion David is actually slowing down the natural progress that the goo would take with his experiments because insane beings (and David is clearly insane) don't often make logical experimental decisions. Other evidence that David isn't "creating" anything is that the Engineers were shown to have Xenomorph eggs on one of their ship in the first Alien and that ship was recognized as being thousands of years old judging by the Engineer in that ship was fossilized
It depends on how we value canonicity. If the Predator movies are canon, which we know are, then it means David is trying to REcreate the Xenomorphs rather than being the one who created them (since we know that they were fighting with The Predators in ancient Egypt times)

David's still got to mix himself with the alien; you'll see that in the final film. It's kind of obvious and plays nicely to Geiger's design, as in there's no mech part yet, just bio.

Dr. Shaw was such a well built character. She was the only character I could see standing up to David or dealing with the Xenomorph threat. But nah she doesn't get a single line in this movie.
It makes me think that they looked at the intended script at the end of Prometheus and said 'Scrap it' were starting over with the bare-minimum plot that makes this movie make any sense. David's a cool villain, but he was never challenged in this film.

My headcanon is that the engineers made the Xenos as a bio weapon and David became enthralled by them. He tried to recreate them but didn't know the exact formula or decided to make some changes to make a "better" version. That's why the chest burster is so different and resembles more of a neomorph because he started with the black goo and the fungal spores.
People going onto new "earth like" planets and not taking standard hazmat precautions always ruins these films for me. I just cant see someone with a science based history being dumb enough to go to another planet without protection.
Seriously. The plot only advanced because the characters had to be idiots who didn't think to take precautions. At least in _Prometheus_ they started off with their helmets on... and they were already planning on venturing there. Here, they didn't even know anything when they step foot on it and literally no one brings up suiting up as a safety measure. That they all died/become alien hosts is a testament to the notion of survival of the fittest.

Protomorphs aren't xenomorphs. They're Davids replica version of a xenomorph which is funny that ridley scott also made a movie adaptation about replicas and androids. And you can tell as protomorphs act more like animals meanwhile xenos rely more on stealth and tactics like in the originals.

Ridley Scott has said in an interview that we won't see the xenomorph we know until the third prequel movie. That's why it's a deacon in Prometheus and a protomorph in Covenant. Ridley knows what he's doing.
