    So as someone who works with the College textbook industry, I can confirm that NFTs aren't even good for publishers. Publishers make money from forcing students into their own walled gardens of assignments, videos, activities, etc. Saves the instructor time and the student has to purchase limited time access to textbook content. That system makes more money for publishers than NFTs will (and is arguably more exploitative...)

    this episode was great. i love ed so much. he's always my favorite guest on binder's podcast. the man's rants are a work of art.
    another reason nfts are overwhelmingly stupid is that digital ownership is a myth. we live in the age of subscription services and streaming platforms where you do not get to own the thing you've paid for. you're just paying rent to access it. you don't get to buy a copy of word 2023 and use it for six years even though it's out of date like i did with word 2007. you can pay the dumb office 365 subscription fee or you can pirate it, but those are your choices. amazon acquired comixology and suddenly you can't download pdfs of anything you buy anymore. licensing deals change and suddenly the movie you bought on itunes is unavailable to download again. an idiot buys warner bros and nukes a bunch of series for the tax write-off and that's the last we'll probably ever see of them. we've even seen proof of that in the nft space already with the rug pulls where the urls change or break or redirect to something else. if it isn't a thing you can touch or save locally without relying on someone else's server, you do not own it.

    If anyone had any actual interest in trading jpgs of template generated art *absent* the money, then they would have been doing it before NFTs, and would still be doing it. The scarcity is entirely artificial, if want to do it for the love of the art, nothing is stopping you -- which is how you know no one cares about the "art" itself.

      My NFT is a Minecraft 🏡 so
      Jk but I agree - for those who are hoping to change their lives through gambling and fall victim to this hype I feel sympathy for. For those who have the means to own a monkey and entry to the special monkey club just because - welp it sounds like they had money to blow on random shenanigans and thank god it’s not me with an nft stain of an impulse buy

    Love this discussion. The religion analogy, driven by the state of our society and economy, digital tribalism with lack of access to physical communities definitely resonates. There really is a lack of joy with all this hoarding, in the supposed prime time for collectibles and I've never seen less desirable and more lame stuff out there.

    Thing is Crypto dudes don't get to decide what "Play To Earn" means, it existed long before Crypto, with Entropia Universe, and Eve Online, both games are 20 years old.
    Play to Earn, doesn't require Blockchain, and a market exists, but it's a microscopic niche genre, and a trend that failed to gain Traction first Time, most died early deaths.
    NFT's only had one true purpose, to get one coin Hodlers trading, and paying the fees, as long as they stay on a blockchain, the leeches, can suck out fees, but can't with one coin hodlers.
    Artists make money selling art once, they DO NOT profit from second hand markets (Auctions), they make money fulfilling commissions, digital, or physical it's all the same for artists..

    I became a cubs fan because they sponsored a baseball teaching program at a local park that kept me out of gang life. To be a die hard fan when they sucked so bad was because you loved the game and the environment of the stadium being more like an actual park.

    Ed being so hyped is hilarious. Also Pokémon is cool!
    If you’re interested in the subject - John Berger’s book ways of seeing and his pbs show on TH-cam touch on the phenomena of the original. Y’all hit the nail on the head - it’s just for money but this corner does touch a tad on the cultural idea and value of an original artwork…. Which makes me also tie ownership of images to bill gates putting all artwork images free online but then had a painting from a triptych that he was going to keep any images of it offline so he had it to himself… and a triptych at that. I’m pretty sure that’s no longer the case but that phenomenon around original artworks is a theory hole that can explain why silly NFTs exist

    18:30 it's not the same, no one expects to buy anything related to Pokemon just to turn around and make money off of it to the next sucker. It's why NFT people that try to replicate the game can never do it.

    I personally can’t agree more. At the same time generations z and alpha are different. My daughter is more interested to get some virtual furniture or avatar perks in Roblox than having a real thing. For the virtual is real. Nft of today are useless shit but they will progress and minecrafts and robloxes of the coming years will fully integrate it into the game play. But it wont be Yugo labs story, it will be Microsoft and Roblox and such

    lol what you're comparing pokemon to NFTs, come on man, i know you've seen NFT's, did you never get into pokemon. Pokemon is dumb, but the games were amazing when you were a little kid. 8 year old me loved walking around pallet town when on the original gameboy.

  • @wamingo
    @wamingo ปีที่แล้ว

    I've played enough video games to know that people enjoy collecting stuff, real or virtual, and even totally useless stuff. In fact I'm sure all humans collect, only sometimes it's of a more conceptual nature like 'experiences'; travelling, memories, sexual encounters, or a bucket list of life things... To each their own.
    So why not NFTs?
    Crypto is obviously baloney... right up until it gets a use case.
    NFTs are a use case.
    Gaming NFTs are the easiest to understand: If you want to use X item (hat/sword/car..) in Y game then you need the NFT that goes with it.
    Of course, if you advertise your game as "Play to Earn" then there's a mathematical guarantee that it ends up a ponzi, and people get hurt. But on the other hand, it should be legal to speculate on things. Maybe it just shouldn't be advertised as such.
    But I can also understand why game devs are apprehensive about using NFTs.
    First it's an invitation to all the trash of the world: hackers, cheats, scammers, money launderers...
    A big hurdle is that Apple/Google/Valve/etc don't want NFT games on their stores, probably because it circumvents their payment systems.
    Unclear regulation doesn't help. Will the Ubisofts, the EAs, etc want to gamble on what the regulation will be?
    So gaming NFTs may have been somewhat stifled, and whether it can still succeed remains to be seen.
    just thinking out loud.

      "Gaming NFTs are the easiest to understand: If you want to use X item (hat/sword/car..) in Y game then you need the NFT that goes with it."
      If a game did that I'd just install a mod that lets me have all the stuff without needing the NFT.

    "I would say it was harmless if it was harmless." EZ I love this. I think what I find so sinister about the space in general is that it has a cruelty and contempt for anyone who is not pulling the rug. And for crypto and NFTs by extension to purport to be "good for" anyone not in on the grift is such a contemptuous lie. It's infuriating. Great episode!

  • @RWSCOTT
    @RWSCOTT ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great, funny talk! NFTs make me cringe. Like any craft, you're a artist/composer/writer etc. when someone established in the craft tells you you are. You don't convince anyone you're a pro by putting a ridiculous price tag on something.
