Eng decided to portray him as someone more aggressive since he's lost a lot of people already; easier to scare off people than to risk them getting close and then losing them too. It gives off a veteran who's rough around the edges and harsh but once you get to know them, they're much softer. (I think about US Southern dads and how they're always like "You gotta be tough! Life ain't nice!". Aka the American Tsundere-)
