- Welcome to Heavily Inked. In our newest series, we're going to speak one-on-one with tattoo collectors and artists about what it means to be a heavily inked person. We'll get deep as we go through the motivations behind their tattoo choices, the way they've been treated in society and much more.
For our first episode we spoke with the delightful Michela Bottin. Bottin grew up in a small town in Italy before become a tattoo artist working here in New York City. She tells us about her first tattoos, the reason she chose to tattoo her eyeballs, getting tattooed by Valerio Cancellier and whether she has any regrets.

I’m currently getting a sleeve by her, and she’s great. Very down to earth, easy to talk to, and her work is incredible. Blackwork isn’t my thing, but whatever makes you feel good, do it. Tattoos should be for you, not anyone else

@@Meilk27 Blackout, scarification, and even the black out marks around her face have existed for millennia. It's been popular in Europe for decades. I highly doubt she knows who he is.
She pulls off her look well because she’s confident about it and you can tell. It truly looks good on her.
Yeah b4 I saw this channel I had a negative opinion of eye tattoos but once I saw it on her it was like they were meant for her. She proof that all tattoos can be beautiful if they suit your style and aren't just there to be there.
or she pulls it off because she is pretty to begin with... when you have a beautiful face it's hard to not look good no matter the hairstyle or tattoos or whatever. not saying this in a mean way or anything, i've just noticed when someone is beautiful they can practically pull anything off

@@inked It's a bollocks answer, there's a lot more to any given emotional state than if she had cried five minutes ago and her eyes are red. Do you not see her convey emotion in this video ? I do. Our body language does a lot more talking than the eyes do and even beyond that I can see emotion in her eyes.
Of course, not to mention the sadistic fucks that she got tattooed by.

@@TJ-vt6rt I think you need to calm down... you're projecting way too much-- while I agree that there are more characteristics to emotion and how its portrayed in body language, you seriously need to step back and say "hmm am I projecting several misconceptions onto her and the artists which gave her the tattoos?" because you're genuinely being unfair and childish. She's a consenting adult who got tattooed by a person who recognized that she was a consenting adult, who is a tattoo artist herself, and knows full-well what are the possible side effects and you're diminishing her experience, her thoughts, and her own values- as well as projecting a characteristic on someone else just because they tattooed her as being sadistic when that's an entirely baseless, ignorant accusation on your account.
You have to be a certain type of person to do brutal black project. She looks very beautiful. Seems she is a just good person all around.
I can see her as a kick ass sci-fi character with some crazy weapon skills and some kind of special ability. She’s gorgeous.

You can put "salt and sugar" it is in this project, but it came down to being a sadomasochistic project. The people has to be honest about that.
A person just needs to watch a video of this project, and see the expression of pleasure from one of the tattoo artists, while the person being tattooed, writhes in pain. To realize this.
Tainan bro, I’m covered in tattoos. Never stopped a session and longest was only bout 4 hrs and i 100% agree with u. I can understand enjoyin the experience of gettin tattooed. I never minded the pain cause u after so many tattoos u go in expecting the pain. It’s like fighting. U know you’re gonna get hit. But that shit is like letting someone beat the fuck outta u for no reason. Jus to see the pressure they use on the needle is ridiculous and disgusting. Like u said it’s PURE sadist, masochist experience to the EXTREME

I wonder what the sensation is getting that part tattooed and what's the after care like or what the reaction is of your eyes themselves? So many questions, lol
@@marugg78 it's not 'tattoed' it's just injected. You don't feel any pain on your eyeballs like similar medical surgeries they might give you a mild muscle relaxant to avoid excessive twitching and blinking but the needle-into-eye thing is painless and you're awake.
Sauce: my grandma already had about 15 injections due to a medical condition
I really appreciate that she’s so open about tattoos as her “armour” and the reason why she got her eyes done. I’ve always felt that I’ll never be comfortable in my own skin until I’m covered in tattoos, but it’s a sentiment that can be hard for some to understand, and can be even harder to explain.
Now that I'm getting tattoos I feel like I'll never have to be naked. Or maybe more like the vulnerability of nakedness is gone.

I found it too, its like I no longer need to hide.
Also although you can see emotion beyond the eyes, i found her explanation really honest and so inspiring. It is a full set of armour, but it's an armour that she forged for herself in exact way she wanted.
@@malyslonek I agree-there is so much power in deciding what part of you (physical & emotional) others get to see/experience, and she took control to the greatest extent. I wish I had the bravery to take full control like that!

As someone who’s been getting tattooed for 20 yrs, is ‘covered’, it’s always been a shield for me...
It's like Sara Fabel once said. The tattoos were always there on her body, the artist just chipped away at her skin and they were always apart of her!

I feel this way about mine. Like, when I get my most recent piece I looked in the mirror at JUST THE STAMP and started crying because I was like, Hello Me, that was supposed to have been there this whole time. It was like. Seeing my true self revealed.

Hearing Michela talk about her tattoos made me realise that a lot of people use it as a form of treatment for body dysmorphia and that quote is such a great way of putting it.

She looks so beautiful with them and she talks so interestingly about her tattoos. I am so fascinated by how different the work she does is compared to the work that she has on her.

I got a tattoo done by her last year and she is absolutely 100% the nice person that she seems like she is in the videos! Just such a great artist and person 🥰
The way she said her tattoos are like another layer of protection really hit home. I remember after I got my first tattoo - planning my second now I'm vaccinated - telling my friend I felt less naked. It's like people will look at the tattoos instead of at me.
I have tattoos that aren't exactly chistian friendly and when people judge me by them and decide not to talk to me or get close its benificial because it saves me the trouble of having to find out theyre judmental later on down the road
That's how I felt when I started getting tattooed. 50+ hours of work later and I forget they're even there 😂 But yeah sometimes that's all anyone will ever see. It's funny bc it makes people notice you more, just not for who you actually are.

I felt like that with my dyed hair. Started out because I wanted people to look at that instead of my acne and now that I've accepted my acne (mostly lol) I just do it cause I like it and feel like it fits me ^_^

I recently got tattooed by her, she is such a lovely person. We just chatted the whole time about anime and shit.
Her prices are very fair, and worth every penny
Michela is the nicest person I've ever been tattooed by. She's so talented and made me feel really comfortable. She's super nice to talk to and always has time for people. Plus she loves Haikyuu. 😁❤️

I love how her tattoos relate to her own confidence, and her feelings about how people perceive her. I like that take on tattoos, they are an enhancement for your aesthetic but also they can change the way the world interacts with us.
Tattoos are one thing but the Brutal Black Project is another level.

I love the blackout aesthetic, but as she said, you only have one body. You gotta commit to that aesthetic over getting other kind of work done. And I have way too much stuff that I want to get done to take up canvas space lol

Seen many interviews with Michela and all I can say is her external beauty matches her internal heart and soul. She seems to be such a well rounded and complete soul - amazing lady.

I'm glad they finally did this. It's nice to hear her experience. She may she shy and timid but it takes a warrior to get through the brutal black project... much less go back repeatedly. I definitely understand why she did it a lot more now

I just couldn’t imagine the pain, having to have the black packed in and look the same on the elbows or armpit, shiiiiiiiit
Profound and interesting. Her comments about how it makes her feel more comfortable in her own body, personality and emotions and with the world are really resonant and that it comes through the simplest visual of just straight ink makes the message very clear and identifiable. Some people can make me uncomfortable no matter how comfortable they are with life and in their own skin. She’s sort of the opposite and I think a lot of people get that. She seems to need answers for her feelings and the discomforts of life and that to me is actually profoundly more understandable. Needing answers and peace and finding them is something we all want or need. It’s what we’re all looking for no matter how we go about it. She’s really lucky to be able to find that in her art.
When she explained her eyes, I immediately related them to getting windows tinted 😂♥️

She looks amazing, absolutely gorgeous. I’m covered but not that much, full coverage black out is not my style. But it is definitely her style and she looks great with it. I am so proud we have great people like her in the industry, she is comfortable with herself and in turn makes people around her comfortable.
I have to say, watching Michela in these videos has really opened my mind up and made me less judgemental of blackwork and tattooed faces. So thank you for the widened perspective. She's a beautiful human.
In my and many others opinions she is the one if the greatest anime and cartoon tattoo artists alive. Her work is amazing and mind blowing, anyone unfamiliar should check out her work. I have a whole leg reserved for her.

She's right about that whole opening up thing. I got my forearm tattooed a few years ago and since then I'm pretty much like "well, now that I'm openly tattooed and it's visible anyways, I can go full, there's no difference".

She is so confident it’s inspiring 💜. Not personally into black all over, face or eye. Thinking of the pain, and recovery process might be really complicated. Recently got my first, it was flash, but I’d booked in other sessions before, after thinking about it, and finding art and styles that I liked. Then I found other artists through Instagram that did similar styles who I followed and also booked in. Love nature, birds, geometric, abstract, black and grey.
I have more plans, will collect ones I love and have a connection to 🙂
I never thought I would ever say that someone with eye tattoos and face tattoos actually looks better or positively enhances. Its insane, this wouldn't work 99% of the time but it just fits her very well and somehow looks very attractive.
I just recently had my first tattoo covered up. For many of the same thoughts. Now I love it as a whole for what it is.
I was literally wondering how she got to this point yesterday when I was perusing her Instagram. I mean, I dig it because she has an incredibly unique look, which I feel is the entire point of having so many tattoos. And I was wondering why she had her eyes done-- and she says that she uses it as armor because people couldn't just look at her and see something that she didn't want them to know like if she was sad or whatever else... but the thing is, we can hear her passion during the last half of the video because her voice waivers from the frustration of having to defend herself and her ideas. You can hear her voice quivering when she talks about how she can just cry 5 minutes before and no one would be able to tell because we can't see her eyes become red anymore, but the thing is that we can still hear it. When she talks about having regret (or not in her case) she's completely steadfast and resolute about it-- but when she talks about what her tattoos have done for her and societal interactions, you can hear the emotion sway her composure. You can really hear what they mean to her-- even if she doesn't want you to be able to see that side of her, we can still hear it.

Incredily beautyfull woman, and a very talented artist with great pop-culture work that i (as a nerd) realy enjoy seeing.
Like most people i googled the artists on inked, and when i saw her in the Brutal Black project i got mind blown that some one is going trough such life changing experience, that takes a lot of courage and THB she looks brutal with the result. Nothing but respect for her.
*I had upper arm and chest tribal worked covered by a new tattoo. I thought about blackout but to be honest 90% of the time its not necessary. A good and reputable artist will be able to cover over effectively. But hey, if blackout is your thing, more power to you*
