The echoing voice during the italo disco track playing at 5:22 is that of a 1980s Italian DJ named Marzio Dance. Some clips of him DJing and speaking over tracks (as was often customary in Europe) are on TH-cam. The track itself is: Xenon - Galaxi (1983)
The whole concept of this song it's just awesome, it's not only a song, it's a experience, you can actually feel like you're in the video, and the song it's just perfect, a very original piece of electronic music with the seal of neon indian all over it. Bavo Neon Indian!
The driver is no-doubt hinting at Kavinsky. The red attire, red glowing eyes with something over them shading them, the strength, the driving, that's totally Kavinsky.
Yea especially with the synth beat in the end, sounding like a transition for his song Protovision. And if you watch the music video for that song, he's running from the cops, so this video right here is the prequel to Protovision lol
GOD I LOVE THIS!!! Cant believe I just heard this 2 days ago and its been out for years! Currently my favorite tune. Love it love it LOVE IT! Oh oh OHIE Oh!
It’s fucking INSANE how popular Neon Indian was in retrospect, for a Indie musician to have 1.7 million views for a music video just like that is insane, crazy how just decided to stop for so long he had so much momentum here. Holy fuck I forgot how good this video was, HOLY FUCK
Wow! This is perfection in a music video, so many interesting nods to some of my favorite films and filmmakers loaded into this masterpiece. Not only that, but Neon Indian has long-time been one of my favorite artists because his music evokes such similar feelings of the likes of Gaspar Noe, Nicolas Winding Refn, PT Anderson, etc. This is just so beautiful. Intro reminds me of a toned down version of the intro to Enter The Void - the disorienting thumping beat, the fonts and colors. Opening two and a half minutes are completely Drive influenced, the Los Angeles nighttime cinematography is strikingly similar, the car at 1:53 is the same vehicle Driver (Ryan Gosling) drives. The entire club entrance is so reminiscent of Boogie Nights and a hint of Goodfellas with the tracking shot. The interior club scenes are so Nicolas Winding Refn its hard to believe its not him directing, it screams Only God Forgives. The last bit of the video reminds me of Hotline Miami (not a film, of course, but a game based on and heavily influenced by art-house films, specifically Drive) and Drive again, perhaps with some Oldboy influence (the tooth extraction with the wrench is definitely a nod to both films' disgustingly morbid but incredible scenes) I could go on and on in this comment with more references and similarities and how stunning both the story and visual aesthetic style is in this video, but I'm too blown away right now by this to even think.
+Dan Glanton You should check out "The Wraith" from 1986. The red rider definitely comes from that. There is also a little bit of Miami Vice and The Terminator in this video too. Nicholas Winding Refn was inspired by a lot of stuff like that. For 15 years I have been wanting someone to show a love for the 80's like what Tarantino has for the 70's. The past 5 or so years in pop culture have been delivering on that. Kung Fury anyone?
anyone else got reminded by Stanley Kubrick's films, or beyond the black rainbow thanks to this music video...? this is a really really cool music video, props Alan!
