You'll need it more in American motels. I use one. I'd honestly rather sleep outside if possible. Never bring a blacklight. You seriously don't want to know.
I would include a power strip of some kind. My mom is in the hospital right now and the power strip lets me plug in all my devices (phone, tablet, ear buds, fitbit) without taking up outlets the hospital might need in an emergency. Same reason when I stay in hotel/motels: everyone has multiple devices to charge, but there are a limited number of outlets.
I also include a short piggyback extension cable; so can take a power point that's in use by tv or something and put the powerboard in a more easy to use spot.
When I travel I always bring one of those cheap indoor extension cords because the outlets are never where you want them. The female end usually has 3-4 outlets to use. Multi use.
My friend and I were traveling in Europe. We positioned a chair under the door knob with the ashtray holding the hotel key on the seat of the chair. We were awakened in the middle of the night by the noise of the key and ashtray hitting the floor and a man in our room. He must have had a key and was very fast. Having a door system is a good idea esp if there’s not a dead bolt even if you have to gerryrig it together. Also, check the windows and sliding doors, esp if staying at a resort condo where there’s easy access to a patio. UPs door bar might also work in a sliding door.

From personal experience id add a Hot plate, pan, electric kettle, basic cooking stuff, dish soap, aero press and microwaveable container. Those are going to be a huge quality of life boost being able to make some home cooked food, and hot drinks and a lot cheaper and healthier than the McDonalds or gas station next door. If you can afford it your own wifi hotspot since some motels have useless wifi and it would let you use your own devices like a wifi security camera if you have to leave the room. Id also include a couple rolls of toilet paper because your typical cheap motels going to run out from being fully booked, and they are going be cheap with what they give you in the first place. Some trash bags are also going to be nice, since motels are only going to have little tiny ones at the front desk.
Very good and important upload, we’ve seen people checked into hotel and motels during some emergencies and during quarantine and lockdowns in some countries.
Couple of things I already have in my standard ditch kit or bug out bag that always come in handy in hotels and motels. Sleeping bag liner with inflatable pillow. Air b&b type privacy lock, slots into lock keep plate. USB powered 750ml tea kettle. Air cushion door wedge. Do not disturb sign, amazing how many places don't have them 😲
I had to stay in an extended stay over 2 months after my home sold, and the new one wasn't finished. This was during the height of covid, but honestly, I was germ phobic long before germ phobia was cool. I cleaned and sanitized it when I arrived, and I told the front desk I wanted no maid service. I got fresh linens and supplies each week and cleaned everything myself. I kept the do not disturb sign on my door. It was a really nice place, but I didn't want different cleaning people coming into my space.
Excellent! You hit every area of concern I have when staying in a motel/hotel! Its why I want to work out getting my own van or trailer. I know who has been there, ME! Thank you for sharing and be safe.
Another good bag video, well done notable items I would add if room allowed: Battery-powered alarm clock, Earplugs & blackout mask, Air freshener & Battery-powered fan. cellular Wi-Fi hot spot & hard drive full of movies. Gaming console for the kids, laptop/iPad for adults. Some basic food & beverage prep items like a corkscrew, plastic utensils, straws, salt/pepper/hot sauce, instant coffee/sugar/creamer......some of that stuff may be in a normal go bag
Great as always. How about evacuation to a shelter such as a gym or arena during hurricane season? I have additional comfort items and important documents in my bag.
I've been using door security bars for years. My 2 cents is that you need to put a rug or carpet underneath on the floor otherwise it will slide easily!
Hello! Thank you so much for the upload. Good info and food for thought as a hotel evac is possible in many situations such as a home fire or family emergency.
Wow interesting topic. Never thought about this scenario! Totally creeped me out thinking of the less than stellar places I’ve stayed. Adding such a bag to my car pronto. Tfs! /ps when staying at any hotel/motel always count the number of door ways to a stairwell or exit. In the event of fire there will be smoke and you may have to crawl and knowing the number of doors will be helpful.
Another amazing video, would like a greater in depth version. I always check hotel layout maps like The Jason Bourne film. Know your entries and exits etc
If the diatomaceous earth is the same as what goes in pool filters, it is an inhalation hazard. I have been told the following: It is made from ground up shells, I wear an N95 when I use it to put in my pool filter. It gets in your lungs and never goes away, making microscopic cuts for a long time.
I can see them snorting it, jsut in case. Most housekeepers are amazing, but when you get to a one-star or less hotel... no, shifty. It is my experince there will be a couple who want to be there and could be amazing with the proper tools, but they get pulled down by a rotating passel of loons.
I like it. The two things I'd add are a can of permethrin, and a small folding table or chair- never put your suitcase or ruck on the beds, thats how you bring home bedbug eggs.
I LIKE and thank you on HOW your video's and kits etc. Are realistic scenarios that happen to people all the time. Like weather disasters. AND. taking trips to hospital/dental type things. Vacation. EDC.
Another hack involving hotels is utilizing the lobby restrooms (usually near the front desk) for bathroom breaks while traveling. Especially with COVID-19 concerns and if you have small children, especially babies or toddlers in diapers. The average lobby restroom doesn’t get a lot of traffic and are usually very clean as compared to convenience stores, fast food, Walmart, etc... They are usually a single room set up with a lockable door so you aren’t sharing the facilities with strangers. They are often fully stocked with supplies due to the low traffic. Often there is even a 3rd “family” restroom with changing tables that get even less use. A final bonus is that the guest breakfast/sitting area is a good spot to let little ones run around for a few minutes to stretch their legs. We’ve been doing this for years while traveling and not once has an employee/ desk clerk ever complained or try to stop us. When you stop for gas, almost all gas stations (especially on interstate) are within a mile of at least one hotel. You can avoid using the notoriously filthy gas station restrooms when you stop for gas. Great job on your video as always! Keep up the good work!
If you walk into a Hotel hall way which leads to your door and others, check the door jam of the room you are assigned: if it looks like it was broken into, return to the hotel clerk to request a different room with a secure door jam. Chances are that those hotel rooms are for drug busts and leagal seasure of personal property. Also check the Hotel or Motel Check in hours so you don't get stuck with the price of a 2 day stay for only a one day stay. Some places charge from 6:00 a.m. to 5:59 a.m. the next day. So if you check in at 3:00 a.m. you will receive the added charge for an extra day that you spent only 3 hours occupying in.
My then 21- yr- old son had his hotel room broken into by cops. He was driving the car we gave him, but they claimed he stole it. We never reported it stolen of course, as it was ours/ his, and we knew he had it and where he was. Eight officers pointed guns at him and his girlfriend . They were terrified! Turns out the desk clerk suggested his room as he had out of state plates. Ironically, he’d just returned to MN to visit friends.... he was raised there. They were really looking for drugs, which he of course didn’t have. Not even cigarettes, as he doesn’t even smoke. Truly ugly and scary. PS... they never called US to inquire about the car.
What a great idea. I actually was just looking in the store the other day at one of those door bars because I’ve had issues with some of the maintenance staff of the apartment I live in coming into my apartment while I’m not there without notifying me first. That really puts me on edge. I’ve already warned the management staff that I’m going to put a camera in place and if I ever see anybody come into my apartment when I’m not there again without notifying me in writing first, I’m going to take the video to the police as evidence and file charges. That being said, it’s still a great idea to have for hotel rooms. That’s really Must have. I also think the black light or ultraviolet light is a great idea as well. I carry one with me when I’m at my job.
A "Mental health" Encouragement bag is not a bad idea. It would contain a journal of all the things you have you are greatful for (or past victories/accomplishments) to help one get through "Monday blues", or posssible "situational depression ".
That’s awesome. I had no idea all of those devices are available. Definitely going to get the fire/CO alarm and a doorstop and door lock. Great ideas! Thank you!
Thank you for the information... especially the security information. Chances are I will have to bug out to a motel (hopefully hotel) during hurricane season. You provided some great tips! Thank you
It's interesting to watch, but with the money spent on all those security and anti-bugs measures, can't you just pay for a decent hotel instead of a motel? (so you don't have those security and bug issues)
One thing you might consider. What if in a bug out situation and you can't get a montel/hotel room. Do you have the right things to weather out sometime in your car? Portable toilet, food, water, extra clothes? There are many different things that could happen in a bug out situation.
So as someone who travels for work & stays in hotels & motels on a very regular basis I always take a battery operated AM/FM radio with me because you never know when you might want/need access to a radio broadcast tue net might be down & so your phn / tab is of no use to you. On the subject of internetbI always carry a small battery operated portable router for the opposition's network ( in this case in Aust is Optus ) with me just incase my home network ( in in this case in Aust is Telstra ) is down fir some reason so you have an internet backup so you can not only access the net but you can msg & make VoIP calls incase the voice network is down, a portable battery operated router is very inexpensive & can be run with just a prepaid sim.
I bought a couple "Buddybar Door Jammers" for use at my last apartment, and I recommend them over the plastic MasterLock version. They're several times the cost but they're thicker metal and rubber and no plastic parts.
Having brought bugs home with me from a bed in a guest house (the guest house was in Cambodia, and I was living in Bangkok), I think the mattress and pillow covers are a great idea. Carrying a jar of diatomaceous earth and a sprinkler might be going too far. The smoke alarm is an excellent idea. An intruder's efforts to enter your room will be hampered by a security bar and a door stop. A firefighter's efforts to enter your room will also be somewhat hampered by a security bar and a door stop.
@Predbeau101 Sure. Even so, that one time I had a cerebral haemorrhage after I got a massive shock off an electric razor, gashed my neck, and passed out, which (I think) was due to the smoke from the fire from my carelessly discarded cigarette, I sure was glad I was too blind drunk to have remembered to place the door stop.
If you are buying a suitcase for this purpose go with a soft sided one. They tend to be more resilient and less affected by temp. The hard cases don’t like extreme cold and will crack if you drop them (which will happen at some point).
Soap wise, you could use castile soap, because it has so many ways to use it. Clean dishes, body wash, shampoo, clean fruits/veggies, and many more uses.
I use Wilderness Wash. Can be used for hair, body, clothing, dishes, and is safe for the environment if I can't get a room and end up car camping somewhere and having to wash dishes in a stream.
Wow I never thought of all the things you brought out. It was very informative. My wife would love it. I experience should crap while I was on vacation. So kudos
Great video, not sure i would use a combo smoke/c02 alarm as smoke detector needs to be high and co2 needs to be low.. but those door jams are a great idea
Excellent and interesting video. I like the way you referred to your hospital go bag video so that those of us who have the hospital go bag ready can just supplement with the motel items. So many things in the hospital bag would be useful in motels. Some of the suggestions below like ear plugs, power strips, etc. are found in the hospital go bag video.

Since you have this thing about Bed Bugs I have heard of a Thermal Remediation device that you can purchase that you can point it at problem areas and the heat will not just kill the live Bed Bugs, it also destroys their eggs. It is a lot saver than Diatomaceous Earth. That stuff can do a number to your lungs.
This is the bug out situation that actually happens. Hundreds of thousands of people every decade need to leave home unexpectedly. Those people typically go to stay with family/friends, or in a hotel/motel/Airbnb. For most of the population this should be the baseline and maybe some convenient camping/backpacking supplies in a separate additional bag if needed. There have been VERY few instances where people have needed something like a tent or a tarp as a shelter after fires, flooding, and storms that displace tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of people each year. You could point to Katrina 15 years ago with people staying in a stadium. Those people could have used something like a tent for privacy. I can’t think of much else though.
I appreciate your video. One thing I don't understand. Your thought was that you would be in the motel for a couple days. Even if I stretch that to a week I don't see the value of the diatomaceous earth. According to what I have read when bedbugs crawl through it diatomaceous earth disrupts their waxy shell and causes their eventual death by dehydration. This process is not instantaneous. Diatomaceous earth instructions say it takes approximately seven to seventeen days for bed bugs to die. Can you enlighten me as to why you have the diatomaceous earth for such a short stay. I would like something that worked quicker if there is anything. Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks and keep up the good work

Great video! Dan Bell's Another Dirty Room series traumatized me when it comes to motels. 😂
Excellent! You hit every area of concern I have when staying in a motel/hotel! Its why I want to work out getting my own van or trailer. I know who has been there, ME! Thank you for sharing and be safe.
Another good bag video, well done notable items I would add if room allowed:
Battery-powered alarm clock,
Earplugs & blackout mask,
Air freshener & Battery-powered fan.
cellular Wi-Fi hot spot & hard drive full of movies.
Gaming console for the kids, laptop/iPad for adults.
Some basic food & beverage prep items like a corkscrew, plastic utensils, straws, salt/pepper/hot sauce, instant coffee/sugar/creamer......some of that stuff may be in a normal go bag
Love all your pdfs!!! So helpful!
Wow! I am so doing this ASAP!! Thanks so much!!!
As 👨🏾✈️Flight Crew👩🏾✈️ I can appreciate this video and confirm that quite a few of these items are used by several crew members that I know. 😉
Legendary as allways. I will now buy the door alarms an put em all over my house 8D
All good ideas!!! Thanks for taking time.
Great as always. How about evacuation to a shelter such as a gym or arena during hurricane season? I have additional comfort items and important documents in my bag.
You may want to start listing your preferred "zippered bags" somewhere.
I am planning on doing a follow up video on this topic in the near future. I figured that I would kick start things with this kit video first.
Good idea!
Modern Survival we are much more likely to use one of these than a bug out bag and an INCH bag. Great video TUP
Oh no no no. That UV light is gonna reveal stuff you DONT want to think about LOL
This has some interesting things I had never thought of, like the DE
If the diatomaceous earth is the same as what goes in pool filters, it is an inhalation hazard. I have been told the following: It is made from ground up shells, I wear an N95 when I use it to put in my pool filter. It gets in your lungs and never goes away, making microscopic cuts for a long time.
I can just see housekeeping after you leave wondering what that powdery substance is.😂🤣🤔😯🤭
I can see them snorting it, jsut in case.
I’ve worked in hotels for 15 years in Australia and lobby toilets are high traffic areas
You can get DTE dirt cheap ( pun) at feed stores as it is often put in animal feed to kill parasites.
It’s very cheap at Walmart.
Thanks you for this excellent information Cliff.
I would fill the shaker with the bed bug killer and tape it off with masking tape, and just store the roll of masking tape to reseal it.
Just qurious do you have a get out of bed bag for those days when you feel stuck
Not yet but I can work on one! 😀
@@TheUrbanPrepper you know that I was just joking
Mine would have milk chocolate in it...lol
A "Mental health" Encouragement bag is not a bad idea. It would contain a journal of all the things you have you are greatful for (or past victories/accomplishments) to help one get through "Monday blues", or posssible "situational depression ".
I think that is called the Alarm clock/Coffee maker set. LOL
Thank you
I really like all the security options, and it made me realize that I don't have any and should. Thanks for sharing!
Great Kit and tips! Thanks for sharing!
Great presentation! Excellent work!
One thing I would absolutely add is a hidden camera detector
Where do you get that?
Amazon sell some and RF signal detectors (of varying quality).
Great ideas. Now i gotta get a motel go bag.❤
Great products featured!
Excellent job. I’m making one for my mom.
It's interesting to watch, but with the money spent on all those security and anti-bugs measures, can't you just pay for a decent hotel instead of a motel? (so you don't have those security and bug issues)
Pop up laundry bag, and a small bag of laundry detergent! So helpful.
Bloody brilliant!! Also watched the hospital go bag video 👌 Cheers 🇦🇺
Interesting
Interesting topic Cliff! Thanks 😊
i personally use the drop cloth to cover the bed ever since, cons is that it gets warm at times
nice i bought one of these about 3 years ago it comes in very handy.
Outstanding video. Thank you.
Soap wise, you could use castile soap, because it has so many ways to use it. Clean dishes, body wash, shampoo, clean fruits/veggies, and many more uses.
Really? 😊 thanks.
@@jimcalifwin3760 They sell travel sized plastic bottles of it at Target where the trial sized travel items are. Prob even Walmart.
So kudos
The portable door alarms are a very good idea👏👍. I will purchase one for myself. Thanks for posting this video👍.
A good list of great items to take with ya
Great video, not sure i would use a combo smoke/c02 alarm as smoke detector needs to be high and co2 needs to be low.. but those door jams are a great idea
I can imagine a lot of questions at airport security
Excellent and interesting video. I like the way you referred to your hospital go bag video so that those of us who have the hospital go bag ready can just supplement with the motel items. So many things in the hospital bag would be useful in motels. Some of the suggestions below like ear plugs, power strips, etc. are found in the hospital go bag video.
A basic alarm can be made from a tin can or beer bottle set on top of the doorhandle with sm. rocks or coins inside it.
watching this a while at a hotel in miami 😳🤣
Now I'm completely creeped out. No wonder my father decided mid-80s to always "take his bed with him" and not stay in hotels!
There's definitely something to that!
Your dad is a wise man.
I would love to see a “go bag” you can take like on an airplane since I do a lot of traveling
That would be fun. I haven't flown on a plane in over a year due to COVID.
@@TheUrbanPrepper yay! Does that mean I get a shoutout on the video?! 😂 but seriously I am looking forward to see what you can & decide pack. I hope you think in terms of like, smart things to have on you in case of emergencies from small to big situations. It will take a bit of research due to what the airlines allow you to fly with. Ps love the channel especially the organizational pods! #Genesis 😁
If you do a lot of travelling that I would expect you to have a pretty good idea already. I've naturally honed my airplane packing over 20 years of business travel and can easily go for up to 2 nights away with just a medium-size laptop rucksack.
@@Kinotaurusthanks but I travel by car 80% of the time and broke down the the middle of the NV desert last year . Since then I have a bag for emergencies in my car at all times because I don’t want to ever be in that situation again. I have started to pick up national accounts which is making my use of traveling by air become more of a topic. But NO I’m not sufficiently prepared that way, Again why I suggested that id love to see a video. So maybe If You want to chime in with good information great, but to pop off just to be a smartass and judgmental I find rude!
‘Kid’s’ scissors & Gerber ‘Dime’ travel version (no blade). I’m still searching for a compact sleeping pad option for getting stranded in an airport.
I really liked this one. I'd at some cheap water flip flops for shower shoes since it's basically like showering at the gym or school...
Love the video very helpful!!!
Nice addition to your preps. Did you have to rent the room for the night, or just go in and ask if you could film a video there? Thanks!
Yeah. I rented the room for the night, but was only there for a few hours to do all of the filming.
@@TheUrbanPrepper thanks for the reply! I’ve been watching you for years! You’re the reason I got started prepping. Any chance I could get you to sub? It doesn’t hurt to ask 😁
You could make the pre cleaning routine a game with hotel room check in bingo and make some funny cards up for the kids, get them into helping you lol!
Those are great security stuff
Hi Cliff - aren't you spraying crystalline silicon dioxide around the motel room? That can lead to incurable lung disease and death.
Great tips!
i wonder door security bar hold door during a hurricane🤔.
Ooo! Good idea!
I just wondering what size is the luggage bag. A 24in. or a 28in.? Glad your back and can’t wait until the next video
Well i cant say ive ever thought of that.ill just carry my ghb/bob if im on the road and pack heat when im inside the room
Ive tested that doorbar your gona want to give it a small kick on the back end to lock it in or it doesnt work very well
Hotel, Motel, Holiday Inn… if your go bag’s not enough, then you take her friend.
