Always interesting always informative, some of the real technical stuff does go over my head at times but i try not to miss one. I built my average system up before I retired and unless lady luck calls with the right numbers I can't see me changing any of the major components, but this remains such an interesting TH-cam channel. Keep it up Tarun.

Thanks for the video. Appreciate the insight into the build quality and internal components. The comparisons are very helpful. I’m leaning towards the Bluesound for a new system and your input helps. I have a Bluesound N130 now and have a positive experience connecting Qobuz into my Rotel preamp controlling with both my iPad and iPhone. I use the better DAC in the Rotel. The connectivity, ease of use and warm sound and cost will work for me. To answer your question, I look for the connections I need, ease of use with the operating system, the quality of the sound and the cost.

I have the Node X for headphone listening. I am happy with what it does for my needs. I have the CNX V1 in my office system paired with a CXA80 and a CXC. I love that system. Excellent balanced review. Its a good example of how breakout products like the Eversolo force other manufacturers to up their game. One thing to mention perhaps is that the linear power supply mod Alvin's company produces does give the Eversolo a degree of upgradeability the other two lack.

Thanks Tarun, the most important things I looked for when I bought my streamer was gapless playback and a proper handoff from the mobile device used to control it. I did not want the stream to pass through the phone or tablet, which is something that some streamers do (eg dts Play-fi as used in Audiolab kit).

Easy to setup, i like the App and love the Sound. The Invest was more than i hoped, but was worth every single Penny. I'm seriously considering the purchase of one of these products, so, thank you for another great review. I agree that HDMI eARC and USB to connect to an outboard DAC are very important features in this category. A built-in display isn't important to me; I'd gladly sacrifice that in favor of higher-quality parts to improve audio quality. If you aren't finished with products that compete in this space, I'd love to see your review of the FiiO R7 or R9. Thanks again, Tarun!

Great review as always!! I'm still drawn to the Eversolo , possibly the masters edition! My present streamer the Advance Paris WTX-StreamTubes sounds great to me but is tiny and has no display. Thanks for the tip of connecting the streamer through the DAC, I'd not thought of that and had been connecting it directly to the amp.

Thank you Tarun, for being highly critical but fair. It's nice to know how the sound quality of modern streaming components can vary drastically depending on the components they're paired with. As any given system is upgraded, one has to be cognizant of any downstream changes in clarity, warmth and brightness to the overall system. And you articulate that very well for prospective buyers. Cheers!

I bought the CXN100 recently (as a refurbished device with a goood price)
To answer your question: What I am missing is 12V Trigger Out. I do have a Cambridge Audio Amp and therefore can make use of the Control Bus to switch on the amp by turning on the CXN100 remotely, however if I were to switch out the amp to one from a different manufacturer, I loose that ability. And 12V trigger out is just a more broadly available interface to do that.

Hi Tarun, great review, and it comes just at the time that I was trying to orient my self around streamers. To answer your question, I guess I am a bit of an odd ball when it comes to digital audio. I would like the streamer to be only a streamer and not have a DAC (and I do not like to mix a two channel audio system with a TV). I think big savings can be made that way by not having to buy multiple DACs (if you are unlucky, you have one on your streamer, then you have a stand alone DAC and to top it off there is one in your amplifier.) There are not many streamers without DAC so the Primare NP5 Prisma is on my short list and so is the PS Audio Air Lens.

Great review as always Tarun. My big takeaway, USB doesn't always sound better than SPDIF on caox or optical. Guess it goes to show that shopping by features isn't always the best approach. And that while USB out can be superior, it depends on how well implemented.

Great compare/contrast. I have the CXN V2, streaming Qobuz via StreamMagic can be patchy sometimes, but that Wolfson chip sounds quite good when I'm streaming 1BTN while having a margarita and chips. All that said, imo Cambridge should have continued to include a remote control and should have added HDMI Arc to stay competitive.

This was very telling! Always a bit surprising what results from different topologies and use of digital outs. For me, something that concentrates on high quality clocking and Ethernet filtering/galvanic isolation. Also one with solid output options and attention to detail there in terms of quality signal to an outboard Dac. Or no internal Dac for that matter (dedicated design).

I don't stream from the Web, but from locally stored FLAC files on my laptop. I'm not really interested in streaming from the Web, but if I was, I'd be looking for something with an interface as near a laptop as possible.
I seem to remember asking you a while back whether it was worth getting a streamer purely for better sound than from a laptop -- and I recall you said yes, it probably was. So I ummed and ahed, looking for ways get around this.
I eventually settled on spending £399 on a Singxer SU-2 DDC. I connect it to my laptop using a Supra USB cable, and go from it to my DAC via a C-line coaxial cable. And that definitely did the trick -- the sound has improved to a very worthwhile degree.
So I just want others to know that they could buy a decent DDC (whether they stream from the Web or locally or both). That way they could keep their laptop if they wished, and that'd be cheaper to replace (should it fail) than most streamers. Mine is a refurbished Dell that cost me only about £200 on Ebay two or three years ago and (touch wood) is still going strong.

I'm currently using a xiaomi box 4k as the streamer, connected to the tv via hdmi. It has usb and toslink so connects to my dac which is connected to my amplifier. Not perfect but does the job.
To answer your question, though. Display, connectivity and sound quality are the most important features to me.

What do I look for in a streamer: a screen (I don't like having my ipad with me, it gets to a more nervous listening experience, very difficult to stay focused until the end of the record without changing). Neutral sound (I think that you have to find your tone with the amp-speakers combination, and sources have to be as neutral as possible), Tidal Connect and Spotify Connect, and a big soundstage, deep and wide. And also an active firmware policy. So that, when Qobuz connect will appear, the brand will implement it in the streamer.

The dacs are Geshelli J2 with Sparkos update and Ladder Schumann. The WiiMs deliver the best Ui as far as I can see. You can connect to Amazon, Tidal, Qobuz, etc. The “connect” functions work flawlessly as well. The fact that there are Apple connectivity issues would rule the A6 out. These companies need to get an agreement with Amazon. Air Play is less than competent.

An example would be a Schiit DAC with the new Unison USB interface. And any source that’s fully compatible with modern USB standards. So basically anything built in the last 5 Years, or so. Although there are older devices. That’s a safe number to go by. ✌️

And they do make models with SD card reader too. They are taller though. And since it’s a full on computer. You can use any OS (including audiophile only Linux OS), and any service. I bought it because I use TH-cam Music, and wanted HDMI out to my big TV for music videos/concerts.
But I got a lot more. I assumed I would take a performance hit, but instead got an upgrade. And they’ve made them for over a decade now. So they’re easily available used, and new. And in many different configurations.
Best way is to buy the cpu version you want barebones, add memory/SSD, and find a cheap OS key (I got a Win 10 Pro key for $35 online, but they’re cheaper now). And computers/comp parts are at a low right now.
And they can obviously can be upgraded in many ways too. Took me a long time to find the right streamer for me. And I think it’s the best streamer period for most people where money matters. Otherwise I would get a Grimm MU1.
And yes it has a cheap built in DAC of course. But in this case it’s basically inconsequential, because it can be bypassed in the OS. That’s how I run mine. USB out to a MiniDSP SHD Studio. Highly recommended.
Oh one last thing. I bought the i3 specifically because they use less power, for SQ reasons. And honestly it seems just as fast, if not faster than my i5, or my i9 laptop in everyday use. So I don’t recommend going big with the CPU. Unless maybe you’re getting an older one. Look at the watts it uses.
Lower is better in this case. Mine is only 15 watts. And reacts quicker than any streamer you’ll get, because it’s superior chip to the SOC (System On Chip/qualcomm snapdragon type they use in phones/tablets) they mostly use. ✌️

Features in streaming, well, that depends. In my case the audio set is not visible. I don't really want to see the audio set when I'm listening, but I do want a pleasant sound 😉. Partly because of this channel, I ultimately decided on a stream set of several separate parts; Bluesound N130 with PD creative separate power supply and new board inside the Bluesound, asynchronously connected via USB to a Denafrips Hermes DDC. Added up, I arrive at €2100, for which I could, for example, have bought a HifiRose 250A with a few 100 euros more. That HifiRose is a beautiful device, but I wouldn't see it from my listening position. I also play quite a lot of CDs and my Audiolab 6000 CD transport also uses the DDC, and the DDC provides an extremely neat connection to the Pontus II via i2s, which therefore sounds optimal with both CD and Bluesound.

Have you taken advantage of the crossover feature of BS Node X and see if it improves midrange sound when crossovered at 80hz? To answer your question, all modern streamers which have a pre-amp, should have bass management and subwoofer out, with the ability to HPF on the mains and LPF on the sub. Greatly improves performance of the mains.

I'm still waiting for the wildly anticipated Volumio Rivo review :)
I'm using the Wiim Pro into my Gustard R26 and have just upgraded the power supply for the Wiim to an external linear power supply. Very pleasantly surprised with the difference in sound. I was never convinced that it would make a difference but it does in my system.

A good streamer for me must sound great in my system and the in built dac should be good enough to embarrass stand alone units. For me volume control is a must. I would say the same for a DAC as now I use a separate streamer and DAC. I control volume vea remote to DAC which is easier than using the phone to change volume. Many people look to add streaming to their older but still good analogue system. My amp is 38 years old so the DAC volume is better than the amp which does not even have a remote.

I think the API is very important, too. I did not see any review which talks about it. It would be great if this would me compared more, whioch also would encourage the makeres to invest here.
The eversolo has an API which allows controlling features of the streamer by sending http requests sent from a device on the same network. So you cantrol it from a simple HTML + java script project. For my own needs, I developed a Windows program which makes it possible to select which track to play from its internal SSD (not using DLNA).
I also found out that the parametric EQ can help with bright speakers - the KEF LS50 were tamed with a setting which reduces >18K a bit and now sound is great and full.
