In 3.1.1 why did u calculate the gradient of BE by only considering the points at C and E, but not the point at B (k;k)?

It's a straight line and you don't have the coordinates of B....
B, C, E are collinear ,so the gradient of BC is the same as gradient of CE and the same as gradient of BE
