Perfect, i always like this valley where Lester is, and its always in my mind, when I think about Gothic 2. I dont even know why, theres no much to do, but the climate is damn fitting to Gothic Series.

The great thing is that you're not told to go into this valley via a questmarker. Xardas mentions that there's a tunnel near his tower by a small pond that leads into the valley. But you don't have to go there unless you want to get some early combat experience and find some items. Enemies are all scaled for beginners, so they shouldn't be an issue. Going there will result in you getting some XP, some loot (scrolls, weapons, herbs) and finding Lester. Who will also tell you about another way into town via posing as an herbalist. But again, you don't have to do any of this. You can completely skip or miss this part of the game. The wonderful thing about Gothic 2 is how little handholding there is. It treats you like a sentient person, not a mindless drone who chases questmarkers who tell you where to go and what to do.
Gothic 2 invites you to explore and the music is perfect in conveying the mood. It never overstays its welcome and blends in so well that you don't even notice. Which is what ambient music is supposed to do. The mood here is supposed to be dark, but not threatening. You're weak, but not helpless. If the game started hitting you with the Dark Souls boss music every time a rat came at you, most players wouldn't dare go exploring.

Gothic II remains one of the most atmospheric games to this date. A near flawless game that (to my eyes) has aged exceedingly well. I still love letting it go a few years and then settle down to a proper playthrough once more, easily sinking 40 hours into the game. Even if I know the tricks of the trade to make the game simpler, I avoid them intentionally (no Dragon Snapper scroll and going on a rampage here). Speaking of which I may have my next run in this Christmas times as it has been a few years now.
I love the controls, the combat, the pacing, the exploration, the map size with no hand-holding to get you anywhere too fast too early. Yes.. it is one of my alltime favorites and the music is easily one of the reasons for just this.
