When I was 4 years old, I went on a tour to Hong Kong and Jumbo was one of the first restaurants we visited. It was wonderful, even though I was still 4 I still remembered the atmosphere of the crowded restaurant. It is sad to see it leaving, I thought I would go there again in the future 😥

if there are enough high res still pictures images that are shot on this boat, someone maybe able to piece them together and create a VR experience game on this boat. VR experience will be the next closest thing you can get nowadays to an actual visit. Just a suggestion.

There were similar restaurants in Manila bay in the early 90s where I ate as a kid, they all closed down before the year 2000. Its amazing the hong kong jumbo palace stayed open for this long. Floating restaurants are an exclusively 80s phenomenon.

I hope they can save this. I haven't been to HK but this looks actually cool and something tourist would visit. Maybe move it closer to the shore and instead of it just floating they can just build something below it to hold it up.

When I was a tour leader around1989 to 1991, I regularly took the tourists to have lunch here. So, I earned quite a commission from this restaurant. I think my last visit was in 2006/2007 when I was a tourist myself and my bestie to have dinner in this iconic spot.
Well, maybe it falls not just because of the Covid-19 Pandemic, but also because it is not attractive anymore. Too slow to respond to the change, I think.

I agreed. The 2000 service and the 2016 services aren't that different. The menu haven't changed and so is the interior. The only thing that changed is the prices which have increased quite dramatically. Which is why a friend told me since 2010 tours didn't offered dining experience on the restaurant like it was before, they only do some quick photographs before going on to the next main attraction

  • @noahboat580

I do like the idea of a mega restaurant floating on the water, odd how i never heard of it. I can see why something like this would be iconic, especially when various famous figures and movies were set there.
But the logistics of a dozen restaurants in the water would be difficult to maintain. And with covid being so restrictive in HK, that attraction had no chance to survive. Now a chunk of it is underwater

its a cool concept but it has little chance for sustainability. i bet getting trash out of a place like that would be a nightmare, especially when you dont do it in front of guests. i wouldnt doubt they dumped hella food waste into the sea, but its probably not just food waste. still a cool place

    • @nyankanakitty
      @nyankanakitty 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I am positive the owner of the restuarant was already aware of the high costs to maintain before the place was built. Many iconic figures have visited, yet none of them was helping save it. I think that speaks volume: It was a failed concept to begin with.

First, they plan to end the harbor ferry service. Now, the Jumbo is next on the chopping block. It is a sad development. Pretty soon, old Hong Kong will no longer exist. I hope the HK administration will find a way to preserve whatever remains of old Hong Kong. Without these legacies, what will be left? Can't you all see that everyone who loved that place wanted to keep it in Hong Kong forever?! The Jumbo Floating Restaurant doesn't deserve a departure to a new place! All of the Jumbo Floating Restaurant fans had memories of their visit to the attraction. As for Ocean Park, they wanted to help this restaurant by donating money to the Jumbo Floating Restaurant company. It had been there for more than 46 years! The floating restaurant attraction of HK must float on forever and always. Can't anyone repair this attraction's kitchen?! As for the company of the HK Jumbo Floating restaurant attraction, you still have the most immortal hope in the palm of your hands, right here. right now.

How did people get to this floating restaurant surrounded by water ?
Did the restaurant have their own ferry service taking people back and forth from the land pier ?
Someone else commented their were 12 different restaurants on this boat ... sounds confusing to me, I thought boat consisted of one huge restaurant.
Or did they rent out 12 separate restaurants to different owners ?
    Appreciate anyone answering my questions.

i have a picture of me as a kid in this restaurant. my kids also have picture in this restaurant. and until today, the name JUMBO restaurant has inspire many restaurants to use the name all over the East and South-East Asia countries. Truly inspiring and it would be the end of an era. I wish the govt of HK take over this property and make it a national or cultural heritage. It truly was/is

The government should assist to restore it under some agreement with the owner. It is a treasure piece of heritage. If it is gone, it is gone forever.

Will not be sad to hear this place has gone. I went there around 1992. The day had started memorably. I was picked up from the airport in a Rolls-Royce (a Silver Shadow II), my first ride in a Rolls-Royce. Unfortunately, our Indian tailor, who had arranged for this ride, decided us to invite us to Jumbo for the evening. All went well until I came back to the hotel room. During the night, my stomach didn't agree with Jumbo's food, and the inevitable messy situation occurred. A rather sad ending to the otherwise memorable day I realised a dream of mine. Thank you Jumbo, you shall not be missed.

Do the essential maintenance and then sell it overseas. Tow it to the new buyer. It will do well in Macau, Dubai, Singapore or Kota Kinabalu in Sabah,Malaysia or at Labuan island also in Malaysia.
