Nice spot, as you said nice and close to home, thats always a win.

    1. Look at you go, giving advice on how to throw a cast net, I was definitely impressed. But honestly… I enjoyed it more when you use to let it go!! 🤣🤣
    2. Good to see you catching no fish again… I’m feeling so much better about myself.

Back in 76 when I worked in Karratha and then Roebourne (Cliff Rodes River) back in those days. We used to launch the dingy there and fish out around Balla balla.
Back then the Whim Creek pub would have events that went all night.
My uncle was a cop in Roebourne. I could tell you some stories.
I left going into the Army in 79 but lived the Pilbara and planning a trip back up around June/July.

Lived off shore from Balla Balla on Westmoore Island from 2007&8, managing the Pearl farm & charter fishing lodge there.

Is the cyclone mooring still there do you know ?
A couple of people have mentioned the Crocs now. We genuinely had no idea.
I mean we always have a look around before we fish or throw the cast net.
But seen absolutely no signs of Crocs there.

@ I’ve got some photos here somewhere of the big crock slide, from 2008. It’s on a side creek near to the mouth.
The cyclone mooring was a big blue foam filled 200 litre blue foam filled plastic drum with a 3/4inch steel upright and loop to moor the boat to & it was a couple hundred yards upstream of the boat ramp there.
We used to tie up & swim to shore to get in the 4WD & go shopping till we found out about the crock. 😂😂
There’s a Lodge on Westmoore Island just to the west of DePuch, double story, light green in colour - you’d be able to see it with your drone.
We used to visit on DePuch - there’s about 10,000 Aboriginal petroglyphs - rock engravings on there. As well there’s 2 engravings dated 1840 from HMS Beagle when Wickham & Stokes captained her from Darwin to Fremantle, they stopped in for a week.
The ships carpenter Bynoe found a freshwater rock pool about 2/3rds the way up the rock from the mangrove creek on the east side of DePuch - and in 40+ C heat they re-provisioned the ships freshwater in 7 gallon wooden barrels from the water hole.
Otherwise they would have had to turn back to Darwin instead of continuing to Fremantle.
You need a dinghy on top of your quads trailer & an outboard to get out to DePuch and all the islands either side of it (The Forestier Islands group, includes Westmoore & Sable Islands etc.
They are all only 3kms from the whim creek river mouth, so in good weather accessible by dinghy from Balla Balla.
The lads from Whim Creek Copper mine shot the big crock back in 2008, but other big males will have moved in since he’s gone.- as they get pushed out of over crowded rivers in the Kimberly - they are making their way back to the Pilbara.
They were shot out of the Pilbara back in the early 70’s before crock hunting was banned, but they are extending their range back there now.
If you give me your email, I’ll share some photos with you.
There’s a real good deep fishing hole just west of Whim Creek river mouth in front of the Sherlock River mouth, again reachable by dinghy from boat ramp in Whim Creek at Balla Balla.
Plenty of Barra and muddies up the Sherlock.

It is so close to home and a handy spot for an overnighter or weekender.
      Magic down there.
It was our maiden voyage in the trailer so it gave us an idea of what works and what mods we need to do moving forward.
The reason we didn’t have the sides on was for 2 reasons.
One being weight. They are quite heavy.
So if we can get away with not using them that would be our choice.
The other reason was that they hook up to the posts and we only had 2 of them in.

      We really appreciate that
You would only need a 4wd to get in there if it was really wet
Like after a fair bit of rain But normally No
The main tack was like a highway

We hope you enjoy the area if you do get there
      Cheers
