    I must say, I do also look for small engine gold nuggets at yard sales etc and 9 times out of 10 it's a very simple fix for under $10-20. Then I resell usually for 3-4 times the investment. Not going to retire off it, but it keeps me busy and I make a little coin on the side. Back to my point, you are by far the most informative and knowledgeable youtuber when it comes to doing these fixes.

    I picked up a free mower with a loose, clanky blade that had the star attachment hole. They were told that the crank was bent. The problem was that they had run it with a loose, bent blade and ground off the raised star part so badly that it would not center the blade at all. I ground off the remaining star raised portion, found a thick washer that took up the space between the bolt and the star in the blade and it centered it just perfectly. Runs great and doesn't shake at all. When the snow melts, I'll sell it for pure profit. Thanks for your great videos. I learn something every time, regardless of the project.

    In 1955 my father bought a push mower. Basic nothing extra, cheapest thing he could get. In 1975 he sold to a friend for $50, about what he paid for it. It would have been trashed many times over, but we would always take it down and fix it. Yes, we...I learned how to fix things at a young age. Still do...I hate to see waste, so it is great to see you save so many things. Good job...Regards, Solomon

    I have this very Toro Mower I bought for $50 used the day we bought our house. It's lasted all this time with many carb cleanings, and blade sharpenings....My simple working class, and resourceful, frugal family upbringing, can't stand to waste stuff! When the blade's good and sharpened, it can cut through foot-high grass with no probs. I'd only replace it with an electric mower (if I found one at a yard sale cheap) :-)

    Not too many folks can do the DIY fixing nowadays. It's nice to see you can find people who can still fix things without having to pay someone to do the job. And you can resell it to help the those in need of a good used equipment.

    Hello, this question has probably been asked a dozen times, but hey here goes one more time. Are you completely retired and do this full time or is this on weekends ? You never cease to amaze me with your wisdom. A couple of yanks on the start rope, smack it a couple of times and you always seem to diagnose it correctly. Like this time with the sheared of pin. What a deal on that mower. I am 79 years old and enjoy watching your videos. Years ago and I mean many years ago I got in buying dead VW's taking them home and working from midnight until dawn rebuilding them. That sure helped to support my family. At first I was charging $350.00 and was getting swamped with guys wanting that extra car to get to work. I thought I would run off a few customers, so I doubled my price to $750.00 and I still had more work then I could handle. At the time I was working at the County Jail. My neighbor was the chief of police and he asked me to come to work with the city where I live, however the VW business had to stop. Best thing I ever did, the PD work was very demanding and I medically retired out after eleven years due to an accident. With my 20 years of Army retirement, PD retirement and SS life is good. Not bragging but with two purple hearts from Vietnam and a few other injuries life sure has slowed down. What you are doing looks like fun and profitable. Take care...Ken

    I traded my Sears Honda lawnmower for that exact Toro model. Someone threw it to the trash and I only cleaned the carb, fixed a seized wheel adjuster. My friend thought his wife would like it, but she didn't like the self propel system. It is the best cutting lawnmower I have ever had. Keep the blade sharp and you will never want another mower!

  • @MrTurdfergusen
    @MrTurdfergusen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    May want to check the blade side of the crank for runout, sheared key is usually caused by hitting something, the cranks stops abruptly and the flywheels mass chops the key. He probably took the blade off cuz it was bent, bought a new one and threw the old one away before he installed the new one and discovered it wouldn't run, so he returned the new blade and brought home a new mower. Unless it has a larger diameter crankshaft stub they like to bend rather easy, you can probably straighten it with a pipe if that's the case.

    The first mower I ever had was a Craftsman that I picked up for free on junk week. Before I got it home I pulled on it and it had good compression. A new plug, oil change, and blade and I used it for almost 20 years. I only got rid of it when I found a self propelled Honda on Craigslist for cheap. I sold the Craftsman for $40.

    More expensive "push" mowers often have a blade clutch, so the blade is not acting as a flywheel at all on those, since it's not turning unless engaged. The engine starts and runs fine without the blade turning. It's very convenient to have the engine running without the blade turning.

    I think the yellow paint was sprayed on the tiller by the retailer. The tiller was returned by a customer for refund due to possible mechanical issues. The store sprays the item then fires it into the dumpster. The yellow paint prevents dumpster divers from returning picked items back to the store.

    I was given this self-propelled 6.5 HP Toro Recyclermower in very good shape and it reportedly has a 'self propel' problem of some sort. FREE for a $300 minimum mower is a good deal, so I will fix it and 'flip it' and pocket some cash before summer ends in 2 months... It may be a simple as the cable to engage the rear-wheel drive needs to be snugged up.

    You confused me with your comment about the Toro lawn motor needing the blade as a flywheel. I thought the flywheel on top of the motor was the fly wheel. It's keyed to make the plug fire at the correct time and it has mass to keep the engine running thru the exhaust stroke. The blades are not keyed. They are supposed to be balanced to keep down vibration. Riding mowers idle without spinning the blades or driving the wheels. but all have the finned flywheel on the top. Same goes for generators. I have the same Toro and need to sharpen the blade. I am tempted to remove the blade and see if it will run without it. I've learned a lot from you and I appreciate your videos very much. Thanks

    • @profnohair
      @profnohair 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mower will run without the blade BUT the kick back when you pull the rope is tremendous and rips the rope out of your hand. It's more of a counterbalance than a flywheel.

    The problem with repairing an old/older small engine is labor costs. If you take it to a shop then It costs x amount to investigate and there is no guarantee the unit is still serviceable. This will keep Mustie 1 busy with plenty of TH-cam content since most folks would rather buy new then repair.

      exactly, to have it checked and repaired at a shop would cost 3/4 of a new mower. which makes people try to sell and end up trashing them nearly, which is good for skilled folks to repair and make money :)

    One of those Tecumseh carbs really beat me lately. A $15 carb kit and thorough cleaning (at least I THOUGHT I was thorough) and it still wouldn't run above a high idle. It ran at full throttle but hunted badly is why I took it apart so I messed something up. A $10 China carb is on the machine now.

    It's really crazy to think a little 20 cent piece of metal made it basically useless. But with less than ten minutes of learning, and the new 20 cent part, it's fixed.
    I would assume under normal conditions the flywheel key lasts basically the life of the mower. But, maybe the blade might have hit something hard like a short tree stump or got a stick big enough through it to cause that? It would also explain the blade not being there at all. I think it likely would have been damaged.

      Thought I was out a mini fridge that I love dearly, it's 15 years old and figured "it was just it's time", turns out a thunderstorm and a brownout was the final straw to kill it's soft start switch (whatever it's technically called, I'm not totally sure). Couple of checks with a multimeter and an ebay order later... I'd saved myself 80 bucks or so. Installation took just a few seconds, the dust bunnies behind the fridge were more daunting than the repair.

    The big name stores deem items damaged or unusable, they will spray paint the items with yellow, red or any other color that the store uses. This will mark the item as broken and be sold for peanuts. Here is the special trick that used to happen, a customer obtains one of these bad items, (usually for 10 to 20 bucks) then goes back to the store and purchases an exact copy of the broken item, then returns the broken item for a refund for the cost of the new item. Magic: One free new item..... but with the paint on the item, its harder for them to return it.)

    You are never better off with an "actual" chisel...unless you actually want to chisel something.

    watched many hours of this channel. I just came up with a superhero... called supermustie. He comes and fixes peoples mowers, snowblowers, etc when they are in despair ."I must , I must mow the lawn before the management does it and charges me exorbitant fees! .... but I can't get it to start!" that's why he's called Mustie. I'm not sure where I can post the drawing I made

    Make sure that the bottom of the crank isn't bent. If someone hit something hard enough to shear the flywheel key, they probably bent the blade, (thus it is missing) and possibly the crank.

    yepper...i had a few of those mowers with sheared keys...they will pull your arm off when you try to start them...out of timing.

    That engine looks like a Tecumseh. My Craftsmen mower has the same style key which has sheared twice when the mower has hit stuff.

    I would check the crankshaft before buying a blade. No blade and sheered key obviously equals the potential for a bent shaft, but hell, you know this ten times over, so happy 4th. :)

      My neighbors g/f pushed a brand new troy built mower over and into the fill cap for his underground oil storage tank. Bent the crankshaft, the blade came up thru the deck. Ruined the mower. Brand new.

    Pretty sad that people will throw away a £20 fix and purchase a new one, and they probably wonder why they have so much debt.

    I used to work on small engines 30+ years ago, and about the only things that went wrong with Briggs and Stratton engines on lawnmowers were, the diaphragm in the carb going manky, valves needing grinding due to not being started, and the aluminium woodruff key on the shaft needing to be replaced due to the blade hitting something, that was a big earner for the shop owners, as the client usually thought that he had broke the crank, the shop was happy the charge them as if they had.

  • @silverbullet7434
    @silverbullet7434 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd bet they hit something bent the blade and sheared the key. I get about twenty five a summer like that. Buy the flywheel keys in a ten pk it will be much cheaper believe me. It will no doubt vibrate some even with new blade. Enjoy watching you work . I got to get the cable luber you have , who sells them.
