- SS Badger is a passenger and vehicle steam ferry in the United States that has been in service on Lake Michigan since 1953. Currently, the ship shuttles between Ludington, Michigan, and Manitowoc, Wisconsin, a distance of 62 miles, connecting U.S. Highway 10 between those two cities. The trip takes 4 hours and is an historic step back in time.

I think what you ment to say was she is the last coal fired steamer in the US. There are still a few steamships on the Great Lakes.❤
For those who are wondering, the ship berthed next to the Badger's slip at Ludington is the SS Spartan, Badger's sister ship. She's no longer in running condition, being kept around as a hulk for parts to keep her sister going strong.
Took that same trip 3 years ago. Completely socked in by fog the whole trip, couldn't see squat but still loved the journey across the water. I'd do it again.
We got lucky and had an amazingly clear day. A crew member said this was one of the best days she had seen in a while. I got lucky! Made for great drone shots.

#10 I am 76. I Wheeled/Helmed the SS Bager 43 back in June of 1978. I also Wheeled the SS Spartan 42 and others. Thank You for a fine Video. Only 8 mm and 16 mm movie cameras were around, then.

we took that ship from Wis. to Mi. back in the 1960's.
My family took the Badger from WI to MI in the 1950s. My mother got seasick during the crossing.
No SH#T! My wife got VERY SEASICK! The boat crosses Lake Michigan EAST-WEST! The swells on the Lake roll NORTH-SOUTH.

The BADGER was built in Sturgeon Bay, Wis. by the Christie yards....not Ludington.
They show the actual builder’s plate in the video confirming that fact.
There are actually several US flagged steamships still operating on the Great Lakes. She is certainly not the last one.
@@garyschweitzer9409 she is the last coal fired steamship, but you are correct, there are a few steamers left, but diesel fired. The BADGER is the last vessel using the Skinner UniFlow engines.

@@TravelAmerica-TV very cool tho! and i love how its designated as a historic vessel officially. id love to see the steam turbine and the engine room, im sure its all massive milled and cast steal, some very beefy gauge stuff, probably why shes still in service 70+ years later!
I put together a proposal to run the Badger on our electrically charged heat batteries, utilizing their existing steam engines. The installation was lower cost, more durable, and could run off the power of a couple windmills or a couple of our solar dishes. We are an American company and were willing to work with the Badger owners, who refused to look at our proposal. We are currently working on Mid-Eastern and African projects and I hear the Badger may be converted to natural gas, or scrapped.
@@user-dh2uy8uh1n more than likely she will be dieselized. She is owned by Interlake Marine, and with their fleet of 9 bulk carriers on the Great Lakes being powered by the latest Marine diesel engines, don't be surprised if one day down the road she will be the m/v BADGER.
She should be scrapped, that polluting ferry. The Milwaukee to Muskegon high speed ferry in two hours is the only way to go!
