- Valve wasn't doing interviews, but we wanted to make sure we filmed Gabe Newell's presentation on Steam Machines, Free Source 2.0, and more.
How the hell can this guy not move or make emotions for so long o.o
Especially in the presence of our Lord and Savior Gabe Newell.
I was seriously thinking he may have been an animatronic.

Really. The man helped found Microsoft then went on the help create Steam. Like anyone watching this didn't immediately know who he was.
Badger He's the founder, but Valve's structure actually doesn't feature a boss.

Well, you could say he is humble, as he could have said "I'm a Valve employee and I founded the company in 1996.." or something similar. But he is not the leader or anything at Valve because the company has a very special company structure. No one individual is in charge. It's basically built around cooperation and meritocracy, which is said to be very confusing for new employees. However, this structure probably gives them a huge competitive edge, as it fosters creativity and productivity among its employees instead of limiting what people can do due to a strict set of rules.
I love the novelty mic stand they used in this video, kind of weird but I like it.
I think it will be the industry standard by next year's fiscal quarter. We could see a sharp increase in non-descript asian man mic stands, and I believe this could even effect high sells, less low buys, and on the stock market floor build strong business portfolios. Could we see the single handed destruction of yellow journalism, gamer gate, and incestuous reviews in gaming? Quite possible Cotton, it's a bold move. In the end if the quarter back takes the football into the end zone, that is a touchdown in my opinion.

Well, to be fair the video is called "Gabe Newell talks", not "Interview with Gabe Newell", so you can't blame them of being misleading.

You guys really need to get a new interviewer because it's honestly hard to watch someone so soulless. Just get a microphone stand, what's the point of him being there? He doesn't help the obviously uncomfortable Gabe by nodding every once in a while or show any kind of fucking emotion, it really makes the interviewee feel like he's not delivering the point or making any sense.

As this was GDC, Valve was on a tight deadline and said they wouldn't be doing interviews and so I wanted to respect that. Still, I wanted to make sure you all got to see the presentation along with me. I also didn't want to have the speakers burdened with carrying and passing around the mic so I took that part upon myself. Sorry if I looked so robotic!
MaximumPCMag Well, as this wasn't really your job I apologise. Being in a similar situation myself, when talking to someone who doesn't show any response to what you're saying makes you feel like you're just not making sense or maybe saying things you shouldn't and it make it very awkward.
Again, sorry and I was honestly secretly impressed at how still you were able to stand.

Has anyone else noticed how the focus when creating new game engines is shifting from having all the best graphics to having the best productivity and efficiency? 10 years ago it was all about "Oh we can render 9001 billion polygons per nanosecond and have up to 300 million physically simulated dust particles", now what is being advertised the most is "You can make a new vehicle, a laser cannon, and a level taking place in the Himalayas, all at the same time, without ever having to compile anything or quit from the game".
***** Until you know, they have the processing power to use the scientific equations derived from nature.
That's because given access to a game engine's tools, the community can do a better job at enhancing a game's features and performance at a much more efficient rate without having to wait for a newer engine version.
Valve and the industry has recognized that and has thus found more value in making the engine more accessible to all the talent out there. Not all game designers and engineers are employed by the game industry. There's a lot of people out there who are doing it as a hobby or a personal project.
In my opinion the major developers want to keep console in the loop. I believe Graphics can get way better but if developers keep pushing the PC graphics then the console market might take a hit. The consoles are how most of the major gaming companies stay in business. Making gaming Engines free and with the coming of Star Citizen, as well as other kickstarter PC games is going to bite the major gaming companies in the ass. A lot of PC gaming guy are going to grab these gaming engines and see who can push PC hardware to the limits. That is what I've wanted to see for so long. This is start of something HUGE OF PC gaming.

I appreciate Gabe's comments on gaming communities. Through various sites and modders, we've managed to keep Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption alive since 2000 and Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines since 2004. Good to hear some in the industry understand the importance of communities, I hope they also understand the importance of being able to mod the games as well.
Does the VtMB community patch still reduce the deagle mag size to 7? That's the only thing I didn't like about the patch when I used it in 2007. (I believe the 8 rounds mag was intentional for a .44 chambered deagle.)
Alica Ljungberg I can't say with 100% certainty because I have Antitribu mod installed atm, but I can say it's easy to check if you have it installed atm. Go into your game directory to vampire>vdata>items>item_w_deserteagle. It's a simple text file that can be modified, but you may have to start a new game for any changes to take effect.
I like how Gabe always starts his everything with "I'm Gabe Newell" as if there's anyone who didn't know that.

This was the first time I actually saw that all this could come together. Previously I thought of PC's in living rooms as real niche stuff, gaming outside of Windows on PC's was a thing but not ideal at all when the majority of games are DirectX, controllers for consoles are fine but mouse and keyboard is just better with many kinds of games. All of these issues are slowly falling away, OpenGL becoming attractive enough not just to use sometimes but as a real practical improvement over DirectX with cross platform ability built in. You're going to have small indie developers making Unity games that look AAA driven by OpenGL and putting them out on all platforms, the software taking care of the scaling to that platform. Who wants DirectX after that?
What's also really interesting is the consoles are stuck in this cycle of having a truly massive investment that takes many years to become profitable. Consoles don't do iteration very well. PC's and by extension, Steam boxes, they're going to iterate yearly and make consoles look hopelessly dated.
That's only if all this comes together and I'm sure Sony and Microsoft are well aware of all this so have plans of their own to stay in the game. It's sure going to be fun watching it all play out.

Listening to Gabe is such a pleasure. Someone who totally understands the market and the mindset of people involved in it.
I am very impressed. Gaben has an excellent understanding of what going on and makes all the right conclusions, can't wait to see how it unfolds in years to come.

My view on Gabe Newell's language towards video game development in this interview and other subsequent interview is this, "Stop waiting on Valve to start work on the next installment of Half-Life. We're waiting on you (content creators) to get the ball rolling with the ideas were absorbing through the gaming community".
Look at Adam Foster, a modder who was later hired by Valve for the content he created for Half-Life 2, no doubt that's what Valve is chasing for Half-Life 3.
