I have a little Appace installed on my Windows 7 for testing purposes but it doesnt work at all. The .htaccess is in the root directory and the same in it as yours but i still get the normal 404 error message. What did i wrong?

i had problems. I have a /access folder that's password locked. So i change that HTaccess and then put the HTML page to go to in the main website section

The .htaccess file is in the wrong folder.
It needs to be in /public_html/.htaccess

for those who use hostgator this what happened to me I used the exact root where my files are for 404 page even in the links just like this
this is my 404 error file
=> ErrorDocument 404 /Portfolio/404error.html
you have to include the root folder I dunno if I said it right, just include the EVERY folder name where you saved everything for the website.
