  • Yes, the rumors are true: going to college is expensive! If you are considering UCLA then I highly recommend watching this. This is real. These are actual numbers. I'm opening up about the cost of attendance (tuition and housing), scholarship and grant money, and the amount of debt I have incurred in my 2 years as a transfer student. It's very personal, but I believe that you need to be fully informed before you can make a big decision about your future/education/finances, so that's why I've posted this. I hope that it is eye-opening and helps you get an idea of what to expect for yourself. Of course, everyone will have a unique financial aid package, but this information can serve as a sort of foundation of understanding about the whole situation. Leave your questions below and I will try to answer.

      Hello! Thank you! I knew that choosing not to major in communicative sciences and disorders would be the more circuitous route to grad school, but I really wanted to go to UCLA, so I made that decision anyway. I don't have any regrets about that decision as there are several grad programs that offer the prereqs as an additional year of study before beginning the masters program. Since these classes are at an upper division level, they are not available at CC (except for the 5 core classes required by ASHA, which are lower div).

    Hello Hailey! I’ve been watching your videos for quite a while now and they’ve helped so much. I just had a question since I don’t know if my counselors would be able to help me, so I’d rather ask someone who experienced going to UCLA as a transfer student. I’m coming up on my second year of CC and my dream school has always been UCLA, so that is where I will be applying (along with other universities). I guess my question is: is it okay to have more than 90 quarter units or at least in that range when applying? I’ve been stressing out lately and I would like to get your response.

    • @HaileyDollarGoesToCollege
      @HaileyDollarGoesToCollege  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Martin, this is highly dependent on the major you plan to pursue, but if you are following the IGETC track it is ideal to stay as close to 90 units as possible. Of course going over by a few units is not an issue, but if you exceed 90 by a large amount, it is sort of a waste of time for you. At UC, your community college credit will get capped at 105 units so that you can graduate on time. That means that any credit earned in excess of the 105 will not count towards your final unit count. What's more important than units is completing IGETC/premajor coursework to the best of your ability before transferring. Hope that helps

      However, something is interesting I want to inform you though. One of my cousins JUST borrows $5500 for his two years at UC Irvine (after completed his GE at a community college). The reason his loans is soooooo low is that his ex-wife took everything away from him (like ALL his saving as an auto mechanic and the family court forced him to pay alimony).
      Because he is poor like this, the school award him a lot of grants that don't need to be repaid. However, his case is an exceptional circumstance, because not all the divorcee decides to go back to college.

    When looking at your financial aid would it be a good strategy to prioritize housing and room/meals and ignore the estimated cost of transportation, books etc. Basically subtract the estimated cost of tuition and housing/meals with the amount of grants awarded to you? Thank you for the video!!!

    For anyone who is wanting to attend a UC, UCLA, Berkley, San Diego or any other campus, please talk with a financial aid advisor. Mention the Blue & Gold assistance plan. If your family makes less than 80k a year and you're a CA resident you'll be eligible for it and your tuition will be covered. You'll only be responsible for living expenses. Keep in mind schools like UC Berkeley & LA are situated in very expensive areas so housing will also be expensive. Find roommates, they'll become friends for life! Work while in school to eliminate having to take out extra loans ! Volunteer! Give back to your surrounding community. Look up Dave Ramsey and his teachings they'll help you beyond college.
    There are a lot of things you can do to mitigate the cost of a college education. But be grateful that you get to be in the position that you're in. Education is something that CANNOT be taken away from you.

    I was class of 2013 and I can tell ya'll the unemployment (and not landing your ideal entry level job at that) after college is real. The mental health issues that ensued after graduation was real because of the burnout. Don't do grad school if you don't know what program you actually want to do. I really recommend embarking on a career with paths laid out for you that will truly secure employment for you after graduation or if your next step is grad school. Student loan debt is insanely high in this country and trust me unless you land a high paying job in the city of LA, the rent here is so high that trying to pay student loans on top of that is going to be really difficult. Get a decent paying job away from the city if you can. Some of us are still figuring it out after all this time and that's the reality for a lot of people. Transferring is the way to do it and if your parents still let you live at home rent free then take advantage because that will give you a leg up 100 percent.

If you’re trying to live completely on your own without any roommates then it would definitely be cheaper to live in a dorm.

    Your heart is in the right place in telling future students how much UCLA cost but your video is all wrong. You should be telling everyone, going to college is a trap and the likelihood of ever finding a job related to your degree are nil. Banks are going to make you a debt slave. Get use to holding down two minimum wage jobs, getting hounded day and night by your creditors and don’t even think about marriage.

    • @HaileyDollarGoesToCollege
      @HaileyDollarGoesToCollege  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @richardhernandez6937
      @richardhernandez6937 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hailey Dollar, OK we will agree to disagree. But the horror stories are out there. No I have never had student debt. Some of the downfalls if you don’t pay your student loans, first outrageous fees and penalties that can easily double your loan. Then there are the automatic pay deduction from your working wage, automatic withdrawals from your bank account or social security cuts when you retire. You want to get a US passport while defaulting on your student debt, good luck with that. Some States will even deny you a driver’s license if you default. If your job requires a license to practice or permit that will be revoked for default on student loans. Of course now with a debt on your shoulders, other loans(home/car) become harder to obtain or at least you will be assessed at a higher rate, including higher insurance rates. Lastly you must inform your future husband of your student loans because once you married your student loans now legally becomes his liability.

    So why not just COMMUTE

    And have no HOUSING ALLOWANCE EXPENSES.
    And no EXTRA LOAN DEBTS.

      Unfortunately, not everyone has this option or even leaves close enough to commute. Commuting can also be very time consuming and expensive depending on your location.

      Hi there, financial aid is calculated according to your reported income for the year prior to your application. Your financial aid package is revealed to you upon admission into a school. Hope that helps!
