That was Rick Mears' secret to success. The terrain changes constantly on a dirt track or point-to-point course; pavement comparatively changes very little over the course of a race, even at 500 miles. These guys just learn to adapt to what they see/feel. And, oh yeah, mad car control skills!
@@NotSteveCook and to add to this...something Jimmie had that Stewart and Larson did....experience running REALLY heavy trucks on dirt. Jimmie had the dirt background those guys did, but they didn't have the learned skillset of being able to handle a heavy vehicle on dirt.
Tony was 27 when he started Cup. But he had been a dirt racer almost as long as Jeff by then. So even though he had little experience in stock cars, he had 20 years of dirt experience already.
