on such a case, at least , the head should carefully checked for flatness, I suspect that the head and the block needs shaving to obtain a proper sealing surface.
Maybe 4 new pistons with a rebore, surface grind head and block and a new set of valves with springs, check the crank as well then you have a new engine, with no more problems and long happy life. One problem it is not cheep!!
Wonderful! I've read your story online a couple of times and it inspired me to purchase my own 49 Convertible a couple of years ago. Its currently off the road while I do a full front end rebuild on her. Engine and box goes back in tomorrow all going well. Did you ever make your trip into a book?
It was great to meet up with you at the National Rally in Queanbeyan. I plan to do a few more checks for typos, grammar and spelling mistakes and then I'll send it off to a printer in China. Writing a book is the easy part. The difficult part is reading it about 10 times to get it ready for the printer. Hopefully I'll catch up with you at the next rally and get a look at your 49 Convertable. Happy Morrying.
Fantastic video. I have recently acquired a 51 model that needs engine work done. I am inspired by you to have a go. Fingers crossed. Thanks again

Yes, that's Hewie. He's now in semi-retirement with historic plates. No more trips around Australia :) Still looking for a new engine for him.
