      I mainly watch for MTG, but I grew up on Pokemon so watched this. I couldn't help but feel he was throwing shade at WotC/MTG when he made some of the comments about the good value of Pokemon collectors boosters.
      And that shade is justified.

    I just bought a Battle Academy over the weekend for my five-year-old's for Christmas. We've been playing the Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee decks for the last few months, and I know he'll love this.
    In fact, my wife just took him to the card shop yesterday to get him out of the house, let him pick out a couple cards from the singles binder, and he picked...the Raichu GX that comes in this box, lol. He's going to be so excited.

    • @JoelRiter
      @JoelRiter 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm a pokemon player. If you are looking to get in the standard is pretty good right now. Its not as overly focused on the big pokemon like people think. You can combine 2 of either of the charizards theme decks (preferably 2 of the Leon ones) and have high tier meta deck (its missing some pieces but you can run it like that and still do well).
      Don't forget PTCGO. The online version is free and all physical products come with a code for online play.

    The great thing about the Pokemon TCG is the ability to treat it as a CCG. We are super casual players, who have very little interest in deck building or competitive play. We started off by buying the Battle Academy. It's a great product, but the decks themselves are very weak and have consistency issues. You will play a lot more "non-games", than is the case with other decks. Still highly recommended, just for the board alone. After that, we decided to expand our experience by buying theme decks and using them unaltered. That's where things get really interesting. They all use different strategies, and you begin to figure out what a decent deck should play like. I'm having such a great experience, I plan to buy every single theme deck I can get, then pit them against one another at random. This is exactly what I want from a TCG: Good, accessible, affordable fun for the whole family.

    To say the ADPZ League Battle deck is competitive is an understatement - it's literally a Tier 0 deck. So if you want everyone at your LGS to hate your friend and quit - get them this deck!

    • @JoelBurger

    Hey Professor I would like to say thanks for this video. At my seasonal job right now I love explaining MTG products to customers since as a player and student I can help guide people to the best options for buying magic products (i always recommend a LGS first of course). But whenever i'm approached about pokemon the best I could do was quite literally take a magic product like a planeswalker deck and compare it a similarly packaged pokemon product and say "I would assume it's similar to this, don't buy it". But this video is exactly what I needed to move forward and help give inciteful information to customers. Thank you.
    Also while I have your time i'm bummed becuase I forgot to enter your most recent give away that ended on the 12th I believe. Also Also I remember at least 4-5 months ago you asked for recommendations on movies on twitter. I can't stress enough how good a film A silent voice is. Absolutely incredible. If you do happen to watch it I recommend the english dub for one reason and that is because in the dub they utilize a deaf person. Any-who, I also got you for that youtube algorithm, stay safe and keep making great content please. Happy Holidays.

    As someone who has purchased pokemon products since I was 5. Do NOT purchase any special boxes. The pokemon company almost always fills these boxes with old back stock product that didn't sell i.e. packs from 2014-2016. This is not a joke. In a box with 8 packs and a promo you will oft get 2 new packs and 6 VERY old packs. For children, buy starter decks, as kids want to PLAY. Or purchase single packs or trainer boxes as these cannot pull the wool over your eyes by charging an absurd price for back stock.

    while I stopped playing Pokemon TCG in gen 3 (EX), it's always fun to see what products are coming out. All I can say when looking at recent Pokemon cards is the power creep is off the charts (also metal/dark are basic energy types, though that was like gen 4 or so, wasn't it?). back in my day, Lickitung had 90hp and that was high for a basic Pokemon.
    since we're here, I have to say the Holon region was the coolest concept ever.

    These videos are refreshing. Seeing the Prof react to magic stuff lately is good because he's honest but seeing the pokemon tcg here just feels more upbeat and happy.

    Great video. What is the best product for a long time magic player to start playing Pokemon? I am looking to try it out with my gf, we are both older magic players. Would it be the Zacian deck plus something similar to play against each other?

      I'd grab either the Battle Academy or two Theme decks. Also, the Pokemon online client is legit 100% free, any paper product you buy you get added on there, and you can learn and start to play within a few minutes.
