#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.

the whole "it was ignored" is just BS, ninja theory worked on many famous games, their last one won alot of atention. nah, the real reason it failed is much simpler, its because its a ninja theory game.
even at their best, the most they could deliver was mediocre gameplay, and now they decide to make a mp arena fighter?
to even question this being a passion project goes to show how mediocre their games are when it comes to gameplay. if this is them doing something with their most love... it really explains alot actually.

What Blizzard always does is catering to the "lowest common denominator" sometimes it works (Overwacth) others times it does not (Heros of the Strom). In both cases they pushed hard the Esport thing, something their target audience does NOT care about, both suffered because of it since "esport" balancing made the games boring and complicated for its audience.
DOTA2, LoL, CSGO, RV:Siege "excel" because they don't cater to "lowest common denominator", they've picked a target audience and have been delivering what that audience expects.
Niches are good if done right (eg: Killing Floor 2) also everyone knows is imposible to please everyone yet many still try and like insanes get surprise when the audience complains.

    • @JPG.01
      @JPG.01 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

@@bugjams Overwatch is not a complicated game mechanically. It's first and foremost a spectacle. The mechanical skill floor for overwatch is way lower than for example for CS:GO.
A big play in CS:GO that wins a match is usually comprised of a lot perfectly executed minute plays. Take a knife to the first player, lob a flashbang at the two players in the hallway, turn around and headshot the guy behind you and let a teammate take out the two blinded ones.
In Overwatch, you press one button.
To pull of what CS:GO would call a big play it takes hundereds if not thousands of hours of playtime to have enough mechanical practice, map knowledge and game sense.
In Overwatch any player who picks up McCree or Soldier or Widow can do the same with way less. A new player can pick the game up, and do game deciding plays in his first few matches.
I'm not saying that either of these approaches is bad. But one clearly takes commitment and dedication, traits that people consider positive in most contexts, while the other doesn't.
It's the casual vs. hardcore debate but reduced to FPS only.

My experience with Bleeding Edge: I played this game several months after it came out, I thought it was so much fun, and I played every day. The music is SO good. Being a huge fan of DMC I played only as Daemon (the ninja dude). I noticed right away almost every match would have at least one person from the previous match in it. After two weeks I was on the global top 100 just playing casually and met many of the top players who were still playing and had been since beta. The vast majority of the time, if four of us got together, we would obliterate everyone in every match because so many people were just getting the game for the first time before they likely never play it again. I think the lack of marketing had a role to play, because the game had been out for months and I hadn't heard of it even being subscribed to Ninja Theory on TH-cam and having played their other titles. Once the player count dipped too low, the new players were inevitably facing a brick wall of progression in most matches due to the lack of other new players to practice with and develop their skill against. We all saw it dying, and most of us didn't want to believe it.
That being said, the community that formed in Bleeding Edge is one I'll never forget, I may not play the game anymore but I'll always remember my experience meeting everyone and forming groups or custom queues and trying to best one another in private matches. The group everyone widely considered to be the absolute top in the game held a tournament at one point. One group of us edited our display pictures to have breadsticks as a reference to Makutu's dialogue and taunts, and my backup account still has its picture and likely always will. A lot of us still hop into each others Xbox parties and chat even though many of us play different games now.

I suspect that this may be one of the unlisted factors. Ninja Theory was known as the studio that "fucked up Devil May Cry", ESPECIALLY with their lead devs being so fucking hostile towards the original Devil May Cry fanbase (calling old Dante a "gay cowboy" which DMC5 seems to include him dancing in a cowboy hat as a weapon as a potshot at Ninja Theory).
Basically Ninja Theory got pissy the fans didn't like DmC (though to be fair Capcom was also pushing them in that direction for a 'western market focus') so they started mouthing off about it, which pissed off the fanbase even more, which meant sales were not good because you'd pissed off the fanbase you were meant to be making a game for.

I meant to email you when you were looking for people’s experience with this game. On top of everything mentioned, there was just no “flow” to the game.
You had these giant maps but only 8 players do a lot of the time it was empty. They really wanted you to use the hoverboard to navigate the map so you had to stop moving and not get hit to get on. You would then spend 30 seconds traveling to the next objective, just to have the previous one taken.
When it came to fights, 1vs1’s were often arduous and team fights were a flustercuck. It never really felt like there was a strategy or counter play and more of “jump on one person and beat them to death”.
There was no room to preform well as an individual so if you have less than competent teammates, you were going to get snowballed. You then spent an exceedingly long time respawning and you could also get spawn camped on many of the maps that was additionally frustrating.
Many of the voicelines the character’s had were plain negative and annoying. When you lost an objective they’d growl “ugh, come on team they got the objective.” Or if you were ganked “is anyone helping me?” Which mentally puts you in a negative headspace more than you might already be in if you’re getting snowballed.
I dumped easily over 100 hours into this game and then I just thought “why am I even bothering?”
    Anyways, there’s my late $0.02

So as a big DMC series fan I do feel a need to correct some errors, first off you’re totally correct that the vitriol against the game was mostly based around perception issues, it wasn’t quite as simple as JUST that it wasn’t the same guy, that was just the initial hesitation most people had. It basically came down to the overall handling being perceived without any respect or care for the original series, things like taking the original Dante character and making him into a character that couldn’t be further from that personality wise, as well as just a lot of rewriting of background lore and world stuff that felt pointless and people also just didn’t care for. One of the bigger things though is an interview coming out with one of the higher ups heading the project talking about the DMC fans being vocal about not being excited for the reboot and said something that came off incredibly rude and disparaging about “not carring whether the game sold 2 million or 200,000 as long as it’s the way we want to make it.” I remember people really hitting their boiling point at that point.
Fuck that rambled, but point was it was a bit more complex, a lot of people felt like the reboot spit in the eye of the original series that people were really attached too, so they went a little nuts.
Now another point is talking about The DMC reboot sales number, it didn’t sell poorly, but the series as a whole consistently sold more with each release and the DMC Reboot is the only game that sold worse than the previous entry. DMC4 sold better than the reboot did which was a first for the series, so yeah it didn’t flop, but it wasn’t a success as far as rebooting a series to try and boost sales

@@pandosham The Definitive Edition is not the worst, it's quite a decent action game, but not a good DMC game. The original is just terrible and almost killed the series. Most fans of the series will agree with this, if you want to check, ask on the dmc subreddit.

Ignore the sperg nerds. Ask actual people not so caught up with REEEEE #NOTMYDANTE #DINO #DONTE and they'll tell you it had very solid combat.
Someone more into DMC than I am said he places it right below 4 as his favorite and above 3.

I've never even heard of this game before. A shame, it looked kind of fun.

    >Sucessfull reboot of DMC.
I don't know about that chief.
Wouldn't call a reboot that got tossed asside in favor of the previous canon and which sold less than most of the previous titles, and way less than the subsequent title, "succesfull".
Hell, Capcom even went as far as to released another version of DmC that effectively reverted most of the things Ninja Theory did in the game, like putting back the lock-on feature, reintroducing allusions to previous games and fixing their bad encounter design.

This video is 2 years old and watching it now I am just learning this game actually came out. I thought it was in beta once and then cancelled.
