    This is the video I was looking for!! Thank you, Mr. Vance. I'm heading to Europe (Western Europe) and while i won't be using an iPhone 14 i wanted to test the eSIM on my iPhone 13.
    I went with Airalo myself but your commentary on Dent is very interesting! I like how they allow us to sell data back. That's innovative 🙂
    Thank you so much for this information.
    Apple should reach out to you, man. They only made a brief mention of eSIM availability for international travel, but your video is what we needed. Also love your straightforward, no-frills review style - it was like you were telling me what worked for you over a beer at a local bar (or coffee shop, if that's your jam).

    Thanks for making this video! DENT actually piqued my interest for a different reason than travel: supplementing domestic coverage. I don't need a TON of backup data, but would benefit from something that gives at least 1 GB of data for a year, specifically on the AT&T network (I have T-Mobile postpaid). All the options from traditional, domestic MVNOs cost a minimum of $100 a year which is SIGNIFICANTLY more money than the $9.99 that DENT charges. Granted, the latency on the domestic options are much better, but I'd say DENT's performance is more than adequate for the occasional T-Mobile no-signal-zone where having any connectivity at all is more important.

    • @MichaelVance
      @MichaelVance  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thanks Ray! I’ve personally just been leaving my DENT sim on all the time as a backup to my US Mobile plan. It’s great for the times when I don’t get Verizon service somewhere and hardly costs anything. Thanks for the comment!

    • @rayw8252
      @rayw8252 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@MichaelVance Nice, we think alike! But you get the best of all worlds: you get coverage on all 3 major U.S. carriers: Verizon, AT&T AND T-Mobile (since DENT can switch between AT&T and T-Mobile). It's just too bad being on Android (Samsung Fold4 specifically), we don't get automatic data fallback or call routing like iPhones have :(

  • @izcab

    Impressive review. As a US based flight attendant I can tell you the struggles with service is real. I had T-Mobile and it was too slow or it would grind to a halt. Then, I had Google Fi and it was too expensive including domestically. Then, I combined Mint with Airalo and that hit the sweet spot. But now I will check out Dent since I’m in Europe about once a week. It will be a treat not to activate every month. With Mint the international data is expensive so I turn off the roaming and activate Airalo. Mint is the perfect marriage with one of these services as I get all the global advantages for less than 25 bucks a month.

    • @MichaelVance

    I use T-mobile magenta max. It definitely has international roaming with very few fees on with calls. To date I have used them in Peru, Spain, Portugal, England, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, France, Gibraltar, Honduras and of course the entire USA. Speed was acceptable 4G. (not 3G). You should check with your carrier.

      Hi MrCfredrickson, I agree. T-Mobile’s international options can work really well. I used them on a trip to Mexico a few years ago, but at the time it was just 3G. I imagine things have improved quite a bit in the past 5 years. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    I had used TruPhone for over a year on their prepaid plan for 3-GB monthly. However, in Oct2021, they abruptly stopped the service without any notice. I contacted their CustSvs and it took them over a week to respond. When they did, they stated they no longer accepted AMEX as a form of payment and that is why they stopped the service. Then, on the second ticket, they replied that I could renew their service that the price for 3-GB had now increased to $17 per month for 3GB. Since they no longer used AMEX, I would have to register another credit card. So, I do not recommend TruPhone for any services.
    I wanted to Thank you for your video. It shed some light on some of these services.

    I am watching this for two reasons... I am a snowbird (spending every winter out of Canada) and maybe even for domestic use because mobile service rates are so expensive in Canada even for domestic only. Here you can't just pay acvording to wgat yoh use, and top up anywhere (unlike in most of Southeast Asia ). Keen to see if any of these eSIMs offer the normal basic function of a telephone - *making and receiving phone calls*.

      Hey Hermes, I'm in the same situation as yourself (Canadian as well) but for making and receiving phone calls, you could use an app like WhatsApp which only uses data. I've used it for phone calls with family in Canada and friend who is in Switzerland and travels to the US. Call quality has always been excellent using whatsapp over data. Not sure if that helps or not.

      @MichaelVance  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome! As long as your phone isn't locked to your US Carrier, you can use it without keeping your US carrier service active on the phone. You'll just want to make sure they keep your phone number reserved for you when you come back.

      You can port your US phone number to Google Voice to park it there, too. I think you need to be sure to not have your US phone calls forwarded via Google Voice, though, for more than 30 days or something like that. Google wants you to be using it in the U.S. But, you can park your number there, indefinitely, as I understand it. And, then get a Skype number for your phone, which will let you get calls wherever you are, and it will just use the data you buy with the e-sim cards. I'm not an expert on this stuff. I've just been researching it. Happy travels!

      Good question Taylor. Yes, your phone needs to be unlocked for this to work. If you buy it directly from the manufacturer (Apple, Samsung, Google, etc) the will usually come unlocked. If you buy from the carrier on a payment plan they will usually make you pay it off before they will unlock it.

    Airalo didn’t work for me. Their installation instructions were not accurate and I couldn’t get it to work. At first, the instructions may be accurate, but as of May 2023, they were not for iPhone (latest OS). The screenshots didn’t match. The steps weren’t numbered so it was difficult to troubleshoot. I’ll give them credit for the warning at the beginning, which said the steps had to be done EXACTLY as written. I take away credit too since the instructions didn’t match. I tried Ubigi and it was great. Three steps to setup and I got it done on the first try. This was in Japan.

    I’m kinda new when it comes to international travel and using communication, having used a local SIM card for a week in Colombia via my friends suggestion and then relying on Google Fi when I did a 2 week trip in Europe. What’s your opinion on Google Fi for international travel? After using it for my Europe trip, I liked how simple it was to use and whenever I plan to travel internationally, Google Fi would be my first option, with my second being something else if I don’t see the country I’m going to supported by Google Fi.

    • @MichaelVance
      @MichaelVance  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Google Fi has some pretty good pricing. As far as I know you pay the same rate per GB of data no matter where you are in the world. I think it makes a lot of sense for someone who doesn’t use a ton of data since it can sometimes be more expensive than going with something like Airalo or DENT. Occasionally though, it might be cheaper. Best of luck in your travels!

    • @DeadTom949
      @DeadTom949 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I have Google Fi unlimited international. It worked very well and changed seamlessly country to country. However, after two months of continuous travel, I got a notice that I was not "mainly using my data in the US", thus violating the T&C, so my data would be suspended in 30 days. So it worked while it worked, but not a good option for long term international travel.

    One thing to keep in mind or be aware of is that for the most part none of these eSIM providers include voice or SMS, they are purely data. Which is a problem if you need to make or receive a phone call when abroad. Also, the data on these eSIMs might be routed in strange ways which can cause other problems. On a recent trip to Canada I used Airalo and data was routed through Poland which caused significant problems trying to access or login to certain websites which blocked traffic from Europe most likely because of GDPR (in that some US sites may choose to just outright block traffic instead of working to comply with GDPR regulations) or they may block traffic from suspicious organizations.

    It's worth knowing that in the EU if you get a SIM in one country (by EU law) you can use it in every other EU country. I can't see any of these eSIMs offering this. So if your landing in an EU country and traveling to a few more might be worth getting a physical pay as you go/pre paid SIM card.
