- In act two in the tsar's apartment (terem) at the Kremlin, Boris is troubled by prince Shuisky's insinuationg story of the death of the young Dmitri. Follows the "Clock" or " Hallucinations" scene. In this masterful performance, Mark Reizen shows how this "dramatic" scene can be done without exaggerated "dramatics", and he does so while singing every single note of the score. Nikandr Hanaev is Shuisky in one of his great roles.

Real Russian genius in these scenes and opera films. Cinema, acting, singing, sets - all perfection. These artifacts are priceless windows into the past. I marvel at the heights so many gifted artists reached under a totalitarian, repressive government.
Sadly probably not. This and the monologue (see my other upload on youtube) and one way post synched - coronation scene may be the only visual testimony of this great performance.
The 1951 by Vera Stroyeva used Alexander Pirogov - the same Khanaev as Shuisky. In 1959 they cast Reizen in another Stroyeva Film in the great role of Dosifei in Khovanshchina conducted by Svetlanov and with a new orchestration by Shostakovich.
Of course there is the complete opera on record from 1948.
Reizen is, in my opinion, the equal of Christoff and Chaliapin.
As Boris even superior to Christoff!
