  • There are A LOT of things I wish I knew before starting law school, especially as a first generation student. I picked the ones I think are the most important and made this video to help you as you start your law school journey.
    To any current law students/recent law school grads/practicing attorneys: if you have any additional advice or other things you wish you knew that I did not mention, comment below! Share the knowledge!
    Thanks for watching!

    1:42 introduction
    3:41 visit/research the area you’re planning on living before moving
    6:51 law school is really hard! don’t plan major life events during law school
    10:54 law school can be isolating. invest time and effort into relationships!
    13:08 law school doesn’t teach you how to practice law - only a base level knowledge of many law subjects (law school doesn’t teach to the bar)
    14:53 in order to be successful in law school, you don’t have to do all of the ECs that everyone else does (law journal, moot court, etc.)

    I have been in the mortgage servicing field for close to a decade, and I can attest that when I train people, I explain that the training process is difficult and long because you can only learn how to handle what comes up as an issue on the job and that "you don't know what you don't know until you don't know it." Looking to go to law school in Fall 2024 so I'm glad I found your channel! :)

    I would say one thing I’ve realized is that we’re all just figuring it out the best we can! Everyone who went ahead of you had someone show them the ropes, just like you will have someone show you the ropes, and hopefully now you will show someone else how it goes!

    • @osnapitzkenzie
      @osnapitzkenzie  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is so true! Most people you go to school with have never been to law school before and are similarly just trying to figure it out as they go. Finding good mentors and a network of support is so helpful!

    Great video. So glad you know you want to be a litigator. As a career paralegal who has polled jurors after a verdict, I've learned that likeability matters. You have the communication skills necessary to make key points, and you have a natural, relaxed way of speaking. And whether people want to believe it or not, beauty helps. You have a great career ahead of you. Good luck with your next chapter!

    Question! I have a 6 months old baby girl and my dream is to become a lawyer, her father is a paramedic with weird 12-hour shifts, some being day shifts and some being night shifts with 4 days working and 4 days off. I am hoping to go to law school in about 4 years after doing my undergraduate. By then, she will be about 5 years old. With point #2 when you said to try (if you can) to not have major life events happening at least in your first year of law school, do you know anyone who's gone to law school and managed to succeed with trying to go to law school as well as raise a child? That is the thing that stresses me out the most.

    • @osnapitzkenzie
      @osnapitzkenzie  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are MANY law students who are also parents and are balancing parenting and law school extremely well! I have a few classmates who gave birth during our first year of law school (and have done well academically). It’s not easy, but it is absolutely possible. So long as you have great time management and people in your life who can help out when you’re particularly busy, like during exam time, you’ll be in a great spot. Try to remember to give yourself grace through the process when you’re feeling overwhelmed. You got this. Congratulations on your little one and good luck on your law school journey!!

    Might mention to people that being Miss California doesn’t hurt when mentioning number 5.

    • @osnapitzkenzie
      @osnapitzkenzie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hope it doesn’t hurt! But you never know how people will recieve that information. I also have many friends and classmates who didn’t follow that typical law school path and were successful in landing the jobs they wanted. The journey is different for everyone. There’s no “one size fits all” law school experience. Thanks for watching!

    I am a new subscriber. How much time in law school was spent on contract law compared to property and tort law?

    • @osnapitzkenzie
      @osnapitzkenzie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there! It varies by school. At BU you do one semester of each. At other schools, you may do two semesters of a certain subject. Most schools post their 1L curriculum on their website so, if you have a particular school in mind, you can see how they structure their first year courses.
