    Hey man I just got the sst57 version and after setting it up it stays in tune perfectly, even with very heavy use, dive bombs and all that. I changed the springs, left the tremolo floating and lubed all the friction points. Everything works perfectly.

      Do you know if the 57 neck is the same profile and radius as the 62, Maple vs Engineered Rosewood fingerboards notwithstanding? Wondering if the pickup tones are different as well. Aware of the cosmetic differences. i.e. scratchplate.

      Seems to just be cosmetic differences (pickguard, covers).
      57 - maple. 62 rosewood. Neck the same shape and radius. Just appearance is the difference. Though in a few days I will have added the 57 to my collection. I have a 62 to compare it with. Though the 62 is the older tinted yellow version. Rosewood.
      I'll forget to update or not find the video again etc etc. So comment in a few days and I'll update my findings

      @@GrohnertGuitar Thanks for that. No need. I phoned and spoke with the AU distro to clarify. Unusually IME of the industry generally, the contact was technically literate and informed. Definitive answer. They are identical with exception of the pickguard cosmetic and fingerboard material. Neck profile and radius, PUPs and pots are the same in both. I suspect you wanted the same colour as me which was on backorder until yesterday. Mine probably has further to travel to reach me, but all going well, I'll have mine sometime next week.

      That's great
      I'm getting the vintage white
      I put together two loaded pickguards already.
      One hsh, one hb (bridge) & single coil (neck).
      I read that a fender mim bridge (tremolo) fits the sx guitar. Also I have tested that the generic though good quality $5-$15 pickguards on ebay do fit the sx.

      They don't list what their pickups are, I suspect because they don't make them. They more than likely buy them in bulk from a manufacturer. If I had to make a guess I would say they are Alnico II in construction. Just a guess.

    How would you qualify the neck chunkiness? Is it a regular C/ modern C/ultra chunky old bat? What about the fretboard radius: super flat like Jackson/Ibanez (for speed) or curved, like Fenders do them?

    • @WombatPage
      @WombatPage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It was definitely a more regular/modern C style neck. The radius was definitely not flat. It was not early Fender but it was more modern, 12 inch or so from memory but I did not measure it. it was a comfortable neck for modern players but not for shredding.

    I'm looking at picking up one of these guitars to learn the instrument. Just be aware that these guitars are no longer made of Alder like Wombat's, the new ones are Basswood. I'd consider that a small downgrade because it's a softer wood but I'm sure they still play the same.

    • @WombatPage
      @WombatPage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a great observation. Basswood is softer but keep in mind Eddie Van Halen's guitars were and are all basswood by choice. He preferred the tone.

      @ryanburr8419 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WombatPage Yeah thanks Wombat. I read somewhere that Basswood is sometimes preferred by players who like lots of distortion as it tends to tame some of the unruly harmonics. On the other hand cleaner players may miss these same frequencies. But like a lot of opinions on the internet I imagine your mileage may vary. Caveat emptor.

    • @WombatPage
      @WombatPage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ryanburr8419 in this instance I think the change was a budget consideration not a tonal reason. Whilst I am sure the guitar plays and sounds good I, like you, am not sure it's a tonal improvement for this particular instrument.

  • @eertje01
    @eertje01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Totally disagree with the skunk stripe remark. I think with a Rosewood fretboard you should never have a skunk stripe. It should only be there on a one piece maple neck.

    • @WombatPage
      @WombatPage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are right of course. To be totally accurate, in the early days and through the 60's there would have been no skunk stripe on a rosewood fretboard model. Indeed this is a nice detail but would not have been the way they would have installed the truss rod on this guitar.

      @@WombatPage The SX website is a joke. For instance, try clicking on Oceana => Australia and see where that takes you. o.O Apparently AU doesn't have an SX distro or dealer.
      The site's Product listings are stale, and tech specs listed for product are vague. e.g. SST+57 & 62 in Vintage series. No mention of neck profile, nut width, radius, pickup types or resistances. SX "Who?" need to lift their game when I can alternatively choose from well known competing brands like Cort and Yamaha at a price point close to theirs with greater assurance of equal or better BQ, QC and components, and in the case of Yamaha, a 5 year warranty! I just bought my first SX with high expectation, only to be disappointed by their rubbish QC at any point in the supply to customer chain, and SX's AU distro's DGAF "at its pricepoint" customer return problem to sort out attitude. Perhaps Squier, Yamaha, or Cort will appreciate my repeat custom and recommendation to others more?

    • @WombatPage
      @WombatPage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@theblytonian3906 You are absolutely right about the website, customer service and the QC can be hit and miss at times. They have gotten more hit than miss in the last couple of years but you still get duds. The same can be said of Squier and to some extent Cort. I have reviewed several SX guitars on my channel and found them to be pretty good for the money. The Ash series Tele, for instance, absolutely destroys the Squier Affinity Tele by quite a big margin. I have reviewed both and I bought the SX Tele because it was amazing for the money. I have played many more when I was working in music shops and always found them to be hit and miss. Yamaha is really hard to beat at any price point and deserves more market share than they get. The entry-level Pacifica would definitely be my choice of Strat-style guitar in that particular market.

    • @theblytonian3906
      @theblytonian3906 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@WombatPage I have four Pacificas ranging from 112V throught 311H modified with Seymour Duncan bridge PUP and 612VIi. Also have x3 Corts, among others. Around the same price point as the SST+ SX or literally a few platry $$ more (< $50 difference in both instances), I could buy a better than equivalent Alder bodied Yamaha 112J, or Cort G110. Agathis or Poplar body Yamaha 012 for about the same money as the SX.
      I simply wanted to try the SX having heard positive things about them here and on another YT channel, but that hasn't been my 'customer experience'. Given the spiel I was delivered by AMG when I enquired *before* purchase in the knowledge that returns from 2500km away are a PITA in an increasing onlines sales market, you'd think they would GAF about getting it right the first time. No inconvenience or expense incurred to the prat sitting in Melb in his office, just everyone else is why. No AMG/SX distro or rep in Qld. SX as a brand can GGF AFAIC thanks to AMG's dodgy distro.
