17:30 That’s 2081, a Boeing hill locomotive. It’s one of the only four units certified to take Boeing parts up and down the 5.7% grade from the Puget Sound to the Boeing plant in Everett, WA. It was also featured in Microsoft Train Simulator.
In my 60 years i can honestly say that was the first unit pipe train I've ever seen. Also, in Fort Madison, that was the longest blade train I've ever seen. Two rarities in one video. Very cool.
Boy that was a lotta pipe! And the wiggles on the ends of the wind-turbine blades always catch my attention. I guess they have to be that flexible to keep from snapping off.
Thanks VRF. The Fallen Flag catches are always good to see. I liked the Meteors too. Cool views of the Commuter Trains at S. Norwalk, the Locos and Carriages looked very smart.
That kestrel *was* beautiful--and so were the bald eagles on the ice in Burlington! Loved the reflections from the cart in Flagstaff, but loved the real meteorite in Kearney even more. The repair at Altoona was amazing--I have no idea what they did, but it sure worked! I always like to watch the Loram grinders at work--and just when I think we've seen the best-ever sunrise at Arvada, you show us one that's even better. This edition was packed--bravi and thank you!
Thought the bird might be an osprey until you identified it as a kestral! Beautiful capture of it, and absolutely serene capture of a winter sunrise! LOTS of interesting trains, too! Or should that be "CHOO"!
Wow! Excellent catching all the trains, especially the Heritage Units, including the CSXT1897, the Monon, and CSXT1853, New York Central, 2 battle tanks in Elkhart, Indiana, a driver beats the train in Chehalis, Washington, the Loram railgrinder in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, an adorable hawk, also in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and so much more, I like them all, @Virtual Railfan, thank you very much.
One of these days, that dude is going to attempt to run over an employee while going around gates and get nailed by the train! And then of course, his family will sue the railroad for not providing enough protection from the train. Flashing lights, warning bells, a gate obstructing the road, the horn from the train and a guy in an orange vest waving frantically to stop were not enough warning.
10:19, that Darwin definitely made the engineers heart skip a beat. If he had gone around the gates a second later, that truck would have been hit and totaled. Never ever go around lowered gates.
In the unlikely event that truck driver was thinking at all, he probably thought the gates were down for the barely-moving MOW train. Maybe the State of Washington should put up some license plate cameras on the Chehalis crossings. There seems to be enough Darwin candidates in the area that their fines would pay for the cameras pretty quickly.
Q: on the NS wb hopper train separation at 15:31, I'm guessing the cars were empty? I don't know how much train/tonnage was behind the Conrail hopper but if not much, how does a knuckle give way in that situation?
Excessive slack action as a result of the train handling and/or hidden defect in the knuckle casting giving way would probably be the leading candidates.
@10:15 - A really close call indeed. But there's something fishy there - we didn't see it, but it didn't look like that worker even attempted to stop the truck. Quite the opposite, in fact - he just casually turned away after the truck passed him, almost as if his mindset was the same as the truck driver's. The close call didn't bother him a bit, if he even saw it.
The driver in the white pickup clearly thought that the crossing gates were down for the slow moving equipment and decided that he could make it, not taking into account the other track could have something coming as well, with the slow equipment blocking his view. This is why it's often stress by safety experts and Operation Lifesaver to always expect another train on double tracked lines. Hopefully that guy's close call taught him a lesson.
BNSF windmill train looked like a whale bone Express. Fantastic pipe train and the rear buffer car still doing its job but just not oil cars what rather what it will flow through
Transformers, friend-and I suppose that the depressed-center flatcars (with 8, 12, or more axles) on which they are riding are sufficiently unusual to interest rail fans.
1:10 Interesting... Buffer cars used in pipe unit train service. I see my need for more pipe loads. 16:27 The sad state of coal railroading, single car operations.
The white pick up was coming out of a track side drive with 2 MOW workers within 15 feet of him. He probably thought the signals were for the stopped MOW train he just passed. Close call...the train clipping his rear end would have given him a good spin -o-rama.
0:22 Hmm Help me with my math think 60 cars 64@40' on each car about 3800 pipes or 152,000 feet. or 30 miles of pipe. Hate to be the one who applied fluid dynamic to run. Hope its all going down hill. The train itself I think just at 1 mile long.
@@kennethhanks6712 That went right over your head didn't it? The word graffiti already implies it's illegal. That was my way of trying to get them to show more.....
The number of ads played during each Grab Bag has gone way up recently. Today I had 4 ad breaks with 2 ads each. Is VRF getting some of the money from these? If so, I'll keep watching - happy to support.
Always adds an extra element of Darwinian stupidity when people risk it all for an Amtrak or a Geometry train, which take literally a few SECONDS to pass.

What makes it special?
Extended range dynamic brakes. Pretty much allows the train to basically stop with dynos alone. Something normal GP38-2s don’t have.
That driver in the white truck had a "OH SH*T" moment.

There was approxamitly 27 miles worth of pipe on that unit train. proof that I have no life on a saturday morning.
@@canyonrunner953 I did the same sort of math on a rail train not long ago. Full train = 7.5 miles of track. lol
I really appreciate the way the cameras capture a sunset or sunrise. Makes my day!
Thanks VRF. The Fallen Flag catches are always good to see. I liked the Meteors too. Cool views of the Commuter Trains at S. Norwalk, the Locos and Carriages looked very smart.
Nice catch of the hy-rail lift frog before and after the train. I've never seen that before. LORAM is always fascinating. Thanks VRF.
Was that what happened? I was trying to figure it out without any background--thank you! And I find LORAM fascinating too!
The sped up blades going through the curves were cool!
I'm seeing it now. Awesome.
Wow, another awesome video, thanks, Scott, have a wonderful day.

Chehalis at 10:19 wins again for the Darwin award of the day. Just about a month ago or so, it was a group of kids on the tracks taking photos.
Beautiful ending ❤
Nice capture of the CSX 'MONON' Heritage Unit at Cumberland. It looked spanking new; I was unaware that it had been released. Thanks VRF!

Nice music at the end.
I hummed along with the song, speechless.
10:19 Fun fact: In France they have signs that say “Un train peut en cacher un autre.” Now we aren't gonna need those here, are we?
The little heritage people pushers are the bomb. 😊

Missed it by that much.....
id say that bumper missed that train by 20 feet at most
10:21 Yup. For I think the first time, I agree with you on the Darwin Candidate business.
174 looks well smart in the new livery.
No one should ever try to beat a train, nice catch on NS going into emergency stop and NS MOW workers replacing coupler knuckle, good video as well!🛤🚂

Single coal car on empty trash train: Looks like a bad order set out that they fixed and are sending on to where it's supposed to go.
Why would there be buffer cars on a full train of pipe? Prevent the locomotives from getting skewered in the event of a wreck?
That guy must be arrested and charged with reckless driving

Q: on the NS wb hopper train separation at 15:31, I'm guessing the cars were empty? I don't know how much train/tonnage was behind the Conrail hopper but if not much, how does a knuckle give way in that situation?
