They actually aren't designed for water. Those holes are for ventilation. Great for feet that sweat. They are meant to be worn only in dry environments.
They were great for the ocean, alas, the sand does go straight through those holds. A nice light, easily to slip on, and comfortable to wear pair of skids.

Nope, no major issues thus far. I used them in the ocean and they worked great for me. Funny enough, I cannot recall if they float or not?

You can hand wash them, like you did. But they are designed to be able to go in the washing machine.
