For me, Robin is the poster girl on how to write a STRONG female CHARACTER instead of a STRONG FEMALE character. The fact that she is a woman is only relevant in her backstory if you choose to think of some of the dicey situations she's probably had to get herself out of while growing up and about how that turned her into the woman she is today. She's strong but isn't the strongest and even throughout all of Enies Lobby you never really get the feeling like she's being damsel'd even though that's kinda what's happening. She has vulnerability and needs to lean on others but it doesn't make her weak, it just makes her look human. The Japanese voice of Robin's read of "I want to live" never fails to get me to tear up. I can't believe some people have the gall to say she has no personality, because I always love a character who is stoic on the outside but has something stupid going on inside. That and the fact that adjacency to Luffy has a 100% success rate of turning people into goobers has been hilarious. I can't wait until we get knee deep in Poneglyphs later on in the story so she'll get her time to shine even more.
Yea Robin, Nami, and Vivi are just great characters of the SHs. Their gender is never really a impact onto their characters as there a more focus on their history and environment on what led up to being who they are. None of them are weak as they can all handle themselves especially robin but when they do rely on others it not because it their only option but because it is the preferable option they can rely on the most. Also they are also relied on when their counterparts can't meet their objective as shown multiple times in the series. The best damsel I can think of in OP where someone needed saving as they themselves feel like their no way out is actually sanji in WCI which is hilarious to me especially with that arc like disney movie musical vibe with sanji being the prince(ss).
“Adjacency to Luffy has a 100% success rate of turning people into goobers” is a quote for the ages. So much truth should be illegal and against the Geneva War Conventions. The man turned Jimbei into the coolest, chillest uncle of all time.
Robbins humor isnt my humor at all so I cant laugh about it But thats exactly why I connect so much with her... None ever laughs about my jokes except for myselfe
@@Idealist_Metaphor Exactly, the Final Saga is gonna be her big moment, we'll finally get to Laugh Tale and it'll all be thanks to her, we'll learn the true history of the world/the void century thanks to her and she may be (along with Sabo) a bridge with the Revolutionaries and the Straw Hats during the Final War.
During post marineford, I was doing pretty well holding up the floodgates right until when Chopper cried out "I will become a monster for you Luffy" (paraphrasing) From being ostracized by his peers, hating himself for being a "monster" to being accepted by the strawhats to accepting HIMSELF to become the very thing he hated all for Luffy One Piece is goddamn too powerful.
The fact that, in the Strawhats, she's finally found and accepted the family Saul told her she would encounter is so beautiful to me. Robin should be a broken person, but she's strong enough to trust and love despite her trauma and her past. She's on the crew because she's family, and the fact that she can read Poneglyphs is just a very fortunate bonus. Even if she wasn't the best archeologist in the world, she'd still be part of the crew, because it's Robin herself that matters, and not her skills. This goes for all of the Strawhats, but I feel that it's much more telling and powerul in Robin's case because she, out of everyone, has the best reasons to distrust others and push them away. Stellar character.
Yep, her utility is secondary, as with the rest of the crew (Zoro was only invited after Luffy got to know why he was tied up, Sanji after he fed Gin, ffs, Luffy didn't even know Chopper was a doctor, he was just a cool transforming reindeer monster). What makes it more evident with Robin is that the transition from "random character" to "nakama" happens after she joins, instead of just before, and we can see it fully fleshed. She goes from keeping distance from everyone, to showing her soft spot with Chopper as her love for cute things takes over. She was already broken, Luffy saving her fixed her up little enough for her to hang around, gave her a little hope to once again latch onto Saul's promise. Then you see her fear: she finally found someone she wants to trust, so she chooses death over being proved wrong again because "as soon as they learn who my enemy is, they too will abandon me, so I can't allow myself to get attached." And finally, we see the last wall breaking, and a 180 turn in Robin. From voluntarily retuning to the train with Blueno, to biting the floor so Spandam cannot drag her. As the last wall crumbles, we see her become unbroken. She went from believing she didn't deserve to live, to not only being able to, but also having people that honestly want her to live, and are willing to give their own lives to guarantee that. Oh, yeah, she can also read poneglyphs, which for Luffy and Mystery Rocks until he finds out he needs the red ones in Zou
I once again have to praise Oda’s writing, because you can tell that Robin is closed off from the crew before the events of Water 7 and Enies Lobby. He does a wonderful job with establishing her trauma and emotions (or lack thereof). Her emotional growth has been very impressive to see, and the moment on Egghead feels so satisfying, almost as if Oda was building up to it. One Piece is too good 😂
She never calls her 'crewmates' by name until Enies Lobby. Before that she kept up a wall because she's had to betray and leave every other companion. e.g. only referred to Nami as 'Navigator-san'
Robin's dream to me is the most emotional one. Her dream technically is to find the poneglyphs and find the truth of the world...but her true dream was the words she screamed at Luffy when he saved her at Water 7: "I want to live!". After being told by almost everyone in her life that she deserved to die, and even accepting it herself, her dream is to live. That's beautiful.
8:20 I also see it as Robin in absolute fear of losing what little remained of her old self. A part of her saw they would act on her behalf, and probably even be loyal to her, but a lifetime of experiences taught her that people like that didn't exist, that everyone is out there for their own. So she preferred dying to having that tiny part of her that still wanted to see hope proven wrong again. "If I die here, they did not betray me, and perhaps these are the people Saul was talking about. I will never know for certain, but he will also not have lied to me." I feel that's the best solace she could find in her cursed existence and I just want to hug her
Yea it almost like she wanted to end her life on a good note thinking about what could have been instead of waiting a bit longer to see that this is what you've been waiting for. Thankfully luffy gave her that chance to open her eyes to the truth and release that burden of hers.
I love how at first Robin only refers to the Straw Hats by their role on the ship, like she calls Luffy "captain" and Nami "navigator", etc, but after they save her from Enies Lobby, she starts calling them by name because she feels closer to them.
Robin is an amazing character. It is great to see her even just smiling in the background with all she went through. Behind that smile I see her thinking "This is exactly where I want to be and I wouldn't change a thing."
20:00 The first time I read 1021 and the line "Demon Child? To protect my friends I will be that demon" (paraphrasing) followed by her Demonio Fleur, it took me like 5 minutes to pick my jaw back up and to clean my drooling from the floor. This was coming from one of the saddest moments in the series: Robin and Brook casually chatting about how they lost everyone, and how they are used to having freaking hallucinations of them being back alive! I just wanted to hug and protect them. Then Brook dropping a line to Black Maria that gave me chills! In Brook's classic calm and polite manner, he said something like "Young lady, for the sake your own physical integrity, you should stop saying that stuff to her," and boy is that a powerful threat considering who it comes from! After that I was expecting the hit, I was bracing myself, a hype moment was coming. And then, the demon. It was impossible for me to brace myself enough for that, for crying out loud!! And ok, I'll admit it, during those 5 min I was also picking my pants back up, and I may or may not have peed myself a bit.
I can't recall the quote, but it always stuck with me when Robin talks about how the crew returned her life to her, returned hope to her, and restored her dream. And how the weight of their compassion affected her.
Yeah, while she's talking to Iceberg before everyone converges on his room. Those tiny moments when we saw her vulnerability were so effective and heart-rending. It made me want to learn her backstory so badly.
My favorite small Robin moment, is when she protects Rebecca on Dress Ogre. After the fight is over, we see she was heavily injured … but she didn’t say anything or allow it to stop her from doing her job.
Robin has always been my favourite. Not only because of her backstory or her personality, but because it’s a masterclass on how to write a female character. She’s a fundamental piece for the plot because of her interests, and her gender is relevant but in the good way (I really think her life on the run hits harder bc she’s a girl, and her theme as femme fatale is self explanatory). My girl deserves everything in this world after all she went through
Despite all the amazing characters in the series Robin remains my absolute favourite to this very day. Even without her amazing development she would be because I absolutely love her personality, her dark humour and all her other quirks like secretly loving cute things.
One of my favorite Robin scenes is at the end of Skypeia. We’re she’s reading the Poneglyph there and a crowd of people are hauling the giant gold pillar to her as thanks to the Strawhats. Meanwhile the rest of the crew has stolen a bunch of treasure eaten by the giant snake, and we’re racing back to the Merry. The crew sees the crowd behind Robin, not realizing what they’re carrying, and urge Robin to hurry up so they can escape. But instead of clarifying that the natives want to give them something worth many times over what they’re “stealing,” she just tell the people to keep the pillar and runs off with the crew. Because she’s come to understand how much their adventure and getting the gold would mean more to the crew than just being given the pillar.
One of my favorite interpretations of the story is Sanji calling out for Robin, it was him showing that he had 100% faith that Robin would defeat Black Maria. This is a guy that is so determined not to hurt a woman he won’t even use armorment haki to defend himself, so why would he freely call out to one of his dear friends to put her in danger, unless he knew for a fact that she wasn’t in any danger at all. That him calling out to her was cementing how strong robin is, despite her lack of fights shown.
And also him growing since he rarely ever asked for help from the crew and just does self sacrifice, this time he opened up and trusted his crew, specifically a female nakama.
Robin has been my favourite character since I was a kid, and I used to so worry that Oda might make her quit or betray the Straw Hats. 😆 But now, I'm thrilled to see her show more emotions and silly faces. And it's hilarious how she calls people by the nicknames Luffy gives them, even though she can remember their full names! I also appreciate that she's the only Straw Hat who asked to join the crew without Luffy's invitation and survived two buster calls. She's truly amazing, and I just love her so much! 😍
Despite her past Robin can still smile thanks to her found family, and that means so much. I love Robin she is my favorite straw hat and doesn't get enough attention. She's been getting a lot more lately, though.
One moment that always stood out to me, is when Robin carries Luffy on to the Merry at the end of Enies Lobby. Luffy and Robin are finally reunited and Luffy's Immediate instinct is to thank Robin. He Doesn't make any quips, he doesn't demand anything in return for all he did, he doesn't complain about he nearly died from fighting Lucci and he doesn't brag about how he took on the world government, because none of that would be in character. He just gives a simple thank you
And she immediately rejects it by covering his mouth, so that she can thank them instead. Because despite Luffy doesn't demand anything in return for all they did, Robin knows they deserve it, as they just gave her back the life she had forgone, and she didn't believe she deserved. And Luffy understands, and just smiles
Robin accepting and owning the title "demon child" reminded me a bit of Chopper and his character growth. When we first met him he thought he was a monster, and it was his being a monster that isolated and alienated him ... and he hated it. However, when we got to Fishman Island, he had fully embraced that idea, stating he would gladly be a monster if it meant he could help Luffy and his friends.
As a historian and archivist myself, Robin is easily one of my most favourite characters in the whole of fiction. One of the scenes that most resonated with me to this day is her fight in Skypiea against Yama, where he intentionally destroyed the ruins and she, in her righteous anger, wipes the floor with him for disrespecting history. I can easily relate to her wish to uncover and protect the past. Even in our world today, so much history get’s maliciously destroyed by humans, that had survived for thousands of years and dictators target the history of specific groups of people to erase their past and legitimate their crooked version of events. Even back in Skypeia I loved the fact, that this manga would emphasize the importance of knowing history and preserving knowledge. Oda weaves this theme seamlessly into the central plot line of the story. And the brilliant storytelling of Water Seven and Enies Lobby, combined with Robin’s tragic backstory and the cathartic turning point when she finally has the long awaited Nakama that would protect her, create one of the many high point of One Piece. I also thought her powers and fighting capabilities were underused after Skypeia. Sure, she is a supporting character, a brilliant book nerd and her knowledge will be crucial for Luffy to reach his goal, but she is a badass fighter as well, so I hope Wano marked the return of this side of Robin as well.
Robin's flashback and struggle through Water 7 / Enies Lobby is what cemented my love for this series. I mean I loved it before then, but after that I super-duper LOVED the series. Such a powerful story arc. Your character analysis vids continue to absolutely nail everything that makes these characters great
I hope once we get really close to uncovering all the mysteries that we start to get WAY more Robin. She just finds herself in the background more than I'd like.
My favourite ED in the anime is where Robin is by herself on the Merry's crows nest, and it shows scenes from her life where she's on the run, and it's very melancholy. But as the music picks up, a bunch of falling stars streak through the sky, and Robin uses her powers to wake up the crew, so they can see it too Such a beautiful way of showing how she grows to care for them, and see them as family
Robin's arc is one of the very very VERY rare tearjerkers for me and I cry every time I watch it. I'm not a person that is brought to tears often, but her story (And several others in the OP world) do it every single time. It's crazy how heavy the emotions get in that anime.
Definitely my favorite Straw Hat. From her macabre sense of humor to her always-imposing intellect to her endless tranquility, she just oozes cool. The most beautiful thing about Robin is when we do get emotion from her. “I want to live” is one of the most memorable moments in any form of media I’ve experienced, up there with Nami stabbing her tattoo and saying, “Luffy...Help.” She's full of mystery and is the perfect balance of mature sensibility for a crew filled with such animated and zany personalities. Her struggles and backstory make the person she’s become even more astounding and intriguing. If Robin has a million fans, I am one of them; if she has a thousand fans, I am one of them; if she has one fan, it is me; if she has no fans, my mortal coil has been sundered, and I no longer reside within this plane of existence. Dereshishishishi.
Robin i just adore her. She is def top 3 characters for me at least. I love her personality and how she interacts with the crew. Thanks for these individual videos Merphy i really do enjoy them.
@10:30 I'd like to add that luffy's reply to spandam in JP "Robin no teki wa yokuwakatta", "I totally get who Robin's enemy is" in EN, hints at a certain prior experience with that flag (Sabo and the Celestial Dragon). In light of that, even more weight is added to this already deeply emotional scene. 😭
At Enies Lobby Nico Robin saying “ I want to live” was so touching because in that moment i felt like Nico Robin was suicidal, just because if the amount of pain that she had gone through, throughout her life. Up until she joined Baroque Works and later met the straw hats i feel like she didn’t have much to really live for.
12:39 yea that was a bit too powerful for me too merph 🤣😭😢 in robin we must protect. I also loved how until only after the straw hats freed her from the burden of being alone in this world is when like most people pointed out she started calling them by name, started showing her gag more, and even started being involved in their antics as a member of their family. In addition, I like how merphy pointed out how even though the greater powers can horde the ponegylphs with their power without robin's knowledge it is essentially just scribbled cubes without someone who can read them.
"I want to live" still gets me in tears. Robin is a wonderful character. I wish she would get more spotlight too cause she could give alot of Strawhats a run for their money. She suffers from heel turn face nerf syndrome. A term I made up for when an antagonist switches sides. For some reason, Robin is never shown to be as badass as she was in Brouque Works probably until the moment where she tags in for Sanji in that one fight. She doesn't need to be badass because she's still a cool character regardless but, like you said, I'd love to see her and her powers utilized more.
20:24 same as chopper embracing word "monster" that people gave on him and literally turns into monster form and finally able to control it for helping his crew..
Robin is not just my favorite character in this star studded cast for no reason. She was important to me growing up, where her story came out when i was in middle school and while Nami was my role model in strength as a kid, Robin is my role model in strength and leaning on others as an adult. Physical coolness and character design aside, she has so much strength in a character that isn't needed to have that much internal strength. like you said. SHE HAS THE BACKSTORY OF *THE* MAIN CHARACTER and even in a world where she could choose to be as jaded she deserves to be, she still hasn't lost that caring part. in that way, that's why she and Vi from Arcane hit very different because they have good hearts. Sorry, rant/fangirling over but anyways, I appreciate your video on this so much! Thanks for the content~
I absolutely loved Robin pre-timeskip and for the longest time felt she had come back wrong from that. Then I read the manga and saw all of these little character moments she has (imagination bubbles, wiping her hands, reacting) and now I'm really appreciating the subtlety of her characterization.
Starting in Thriller Bark, Robin starts calling the the crew members by name. Previously she only referred to them by their roles (navigator, swordsman, long nose, cook, doctor) which shows her hesitancy to officially join the crew based on past experiences. It was not until the events of Enies Lobby when the crew showed her their commitment and she was able to admit to herself what she desired that she was able to show those emotional bonds instead of closing herself off.
To combine this video with the Brook one, I absolutely loved in the Black Maria fight when, after Robin has been beaten and bloodied and Black Maria is taunting her, Brook simply says that Black Maria has said something very foolish and leaves his complete trust in Robin's ability, which she acknowledges and appreciates
Oh man I'm getting teary eyed just from people commenting about her growth as a character. Knowing her story I find it so satisfying to just see her happy among the crew. Every time I see her smile and be happy I just go 'awwwww good to see you
So happy to see you delve into the amazing character that is Robin! She is my favorite Strawhat (Luffy a very close second) and super special and dear to me.
Love these character breakdowns. This is why you’re my fav manga reviewer. Its about the characters and story. Not power levels. Keep up the great work. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I love Robin so much, seen her have trust in someone and starting to grow as a person it ready show who she and everyone care for the crew. She maybe in the sideline or the support crew but we and luffy need her the most
I have an unrelated theory that just came to mind I wanted to share with you. You know the story about an elephant being tied by a rope so it doesn’t try to move, when in reality it can leave whenever it wants to? I had a thought that maybe devil fruits taking away your ability to swim can be overcome. Just a random thing that came to mind. I know the idea of sea stone would negate that a bit but I’m not sure I thought it would be fun to consider. Now that I’m caught up and depressed about it, your videos give me life Merphy, thank you.
She definitely knows more than what she has told the strawhats/ readers. I feel like by doing that she's making it so if anything were to happen and she gets in trouble it'll only be her since she's the only one who knows anything. Really subtle way of her character making sure not to endanger anyone unnecessarily. For example she literally kept the location of pluton to herself until we discovered it was on wano.
Thinking of Robin and her scenes just make me smile and teary eye on fuzzy warm feeling of happiness, it really is one of the more if not the most accomplished character in One Piece and just makes me excited that we have still a lot of road to trail with her by our side
Robin's and Nami backstory/flashbacks were the ones the made me cry a LOT while reading them and it was worse when you watch the anime (the japanese voice actresses are phenomenal)
I casually watched on my tv in Italy an episode of One Piece. I was 7 and I didn't know anything about manga and anime. It was the 67 episode with the appearance of Miss All Sunday and I was really fascinated by this character. It was one of the reasons I started watching One Piece (I couldn't image how great of a character she was). So not only she is one of my favourite characters in literature but also the one that made me aware of the manga and anime world in general. Thank you for your great and heartfelt analysis
Amongst all the discourse on what’s the saddest backstory, the two lines that always break my heart are robins “are you my mommy?” To Olivia in her flashback and “my dream had too many enemies.” To luffy in Alabasta.
Robin like Brook is my favorite kind of character. As you say, they could both be main characters, but choose to be just amazing teammates. She's incredibly mysterious I will always want more of her in chapters. Her going from very reserved and lonely to giggling like a a little girl at Luffy's antics is one of my favorite arcs. She's the amazing auntie everyone would love to have and is somehow vulnerable, confidant and classy all at the same time.
Im coming here from a video I saw from another channel yesterday. Where the creator presented their take on One Piece after reading all of it for the first time and in only one month. And they're take was just emotionless. It basically wanted to say that one piece was OK as an anime/manga, like if they didn't really wanted to enjoy but just finish it. I did not understand that and just felt bad. But now I get here, to a channel I have never seen before and to my surprise is one of the best dives i've encountered myself with into maybe my most beloved character from One Piece and I can feel the love for the characters and the enjoyment you get from the series. It healed my broken soul from the last video and I thank you. I am now going to proceed to feast on your content and be grateful ever after.
@@diegoperezsommariva2509 yeah that's him. His voice is emotionless and boring, and he's trying not to praise the manga so much that it becomes kinda petty.
Robin pulled me out of a really dark place, she's just so strong and I love seeing her be goofy with the straw hats. It's just like awh you can still be happy after trauma : ' ), She's just so freaking cool too. I often re-read the series and notice some lil quirks of hers towards other crew members that are really wholesome. Like how she'll only say dark stuff only around specific crew members like Usopp. It's just nice seeing have such a great family dynamic with the crew honestly one my favorite characters. I cannot wait to see what she does next! I cried when she cried!
Robin is one of my favorite characters from anything, ever. I identify with her so much: her reservation and difficulty in opening up, the way she hangs back and watches the crew be chaotic, the way she always felt unwanted and alone. The first time I watched the anime I didn’t cry at her big Enis Lobby scene, but these days when I replay that level in Pirate Warriors 3, if I watch the cutscene I’m guaranteed to start weeping.
To this day I can't watch the I want to live moment and Saul's last words to Robin without fighting back tears (and failing mind you). These scenes just get to me, as do Merry's funeral and the moment where Luffy breaks at marine ford. I love Robin she's awesome.
Oda was definitely in his writing bag when he crafted Robins story, heck even to this day when it comes to Robin I feel like that's when we see Oda at his magnificent best
Robin won my heart over during Enies Lobby. Her "I Want To Live!" scene is still my top moment of the series (I'm either still in Zou or just past it). Robin's cry out to Luffy to help her brought me to tears. I've struggled with depression so seeing her come back from it broke me. If i ever get a tattoo, that moment will be my first one.
Robin is my favorite character in the universe, she even has my favorite scene of all time the "I want to live" moment. Love her presence she gives to helping her friends, even before Enies lobby. Favorite backstory, very sad but it hits hard when you see the life she is living now with the crew. Her humor is adorable but terrifying lol.
👏🤩 As soon as I had reached the conclusion of this awesome video my mind immediately thought about how cool it was to use Nico Robin during the first time I had been completing through like the story-log from One Piece Pirate Warriors 3 and thinking about it has now been more than 7 years since such fun times on my video games as young adult back then totally gives myself a big smile going from ear to ear so thank you very much for such an awesome video! 😊
Great analysis, one of many most favourite moments of this beautiful series.. There's so many moments in this series that just break me no matter how many times I see it and that's definitely one of them. 😆
Robin’s experience after sabaody where she was forced onto the bridge construction in tequila wolf is possibly the saddest I’ve been during my time watching OP. The entire concept of generations of people born into slavery to construct the bridge absolutely broke my heart, even more than the other sad point in her story.
the part about her becoming a demon, even when she was called a demon child, is the same thing with chopper too, he hated it to be called a monster and later he said for luffy he can even become a monster. its just all the members having become extremely loyal to luffy, they all put their own dreams after luffys.
the wano thing was huge because it seems like we saw less and less assiny stuff because she was trying to escape from her past, and now it feels like she was forced to face it and come to terms with it
Small correction but it has Yosaku that introduced the warlords concept and structure in the first chapter of Arlong Park (ch 69), by saying that that are 7 pirates authorized by the WG and that not only Mihawk is one of them but Jimbei as well, and Arlong is someone that fought by Jimbe side
The Enes Lobby moment is what truly sold me to keep reading One Piece. And why Nico Robin is my favorite gal in all of the series! Her Wano Arc moment is also incredible. This series will always be amongst my top 3.
Robin was never allowed to just be a kid and act like a kid so now that she is with the straw hats and luffy being luffy she can act a bit childish without worrying
The point about flags being important is great. It’s a real world application too, flag burning is very taboo. It has the same meaning to declare war if you burn someone’s flag.
Robin has been my favorite ever since enies lobby aired. So yah thata about 20 years now... But... Her accepting the demon with demonio fleur is kinda the same as Chopper accepting the monster with Monster point.. (it was still awesome, but yah had a big déjà vu there)
It's also relevant how in the timeskip she said that it was funny how she was trying to get stronger not for her own sake, but for other people that mattered to her. And now I even think about how at first she only called Luffy by his name and for the rest she referred to them with their role in the crew. Truly great character development.
I loved the dynamic of Robin and brook in wano in the manga and the anime. Hey have you ever listened to the soundtrack of the OP anime. Their great especially whole cake island. Very twisted Disney.
@@TyandOnGoing Sanji was always a Disney princess XD
@Ty Momo is probably the most damsel character in One Piece. Guarded by a dragon and everything
“Adjacency to Luffy has a 100% success rate of turning people into goobers” is a quote for the ages. So much truth should be illegal and against the Geneva War Conventions. The man turned Jimbei into the coolest, chillest uncle of all time.
Yeah she is weakling and crybaby. But it is what u expect from female. It is about overcoming it. And she did it.
I absolutely love Robin's sense of humor. She doesn't always get the spot light in funny moments but when she does it has me crying from laughter
Robbins humor isnt my humor at all so I cant laugh about it
But thats exactly why I connect so much with her... None ever laughs about my jokes except for myselfe
Im not seeing Robin's joke as real joke, she kinda like me when im in bad situation, i always think about bad things like her.
Robin is easily my favourite. Wish she gets more highlights and archaeology/history rants.
I AGREE 😭🌊😍💖
I feel like she’s gonna shine in this last saga, we got a taste at the end of wano

@@MugenHeadNinja I can't wait for that. It is soo fun to just get her insight and see how happy she is about doing it.
I love that both Chopper and Robin has had their moment embracing the label that were put on them, both doing it for their friends.
During post marineford, I was doing pretty well holding up the floodgates right until when Chopper cried out "I will become a monster for you Luffy" (paraphrasing)
From being ostracized by his peers, hating himself for being a "monster" to being accepted by the strawhats to accepting HIMSELF to become the very thing he hated all for Luffy
One Piece is goddamn too powerful.
EXACTLY 😭🌊😍💖
One Piece is too good 😂
That's true 😭🌊😍💖
She never calls her 'crewmates' by name until Enies Lobby. Before that she kept up a wall because she's had to betray and leave every other companion. e.g. only referred to Nami as 'Navigator-san'
@@EsquilaxM right 😭🌊
Egghead really does well in establishing we still have so much to dive into for robin as a character.
@@TyandOnGoing yes 👍
Robin's dream to me is the most emotional one. Her dream technically is to find the poneglyphs and find the truth of the world...but her true dream was the words she screamed at Luffy when he saved her at Water 7: "I want to live!". After being told by almost everyone in her life that she deserved to die, and even accepting it herself, her dream is to live. That's beautiful.
I want Oda to show us more Robin drawings. I want to see her interpretation of the crew, and of villains and such. An untapped comedy gold mine
@@TyandOnGoing "I cannot afford for them to abandon me too"
I love how at first Robin only refers to the Straw Hats by their role on the ship, like she calls Luffy "captain" and Nami "navigator", etc, but after they save her from Enies Lobby, she starts calling them by name because she feels closer to them.
If Im not mistaken she always called Luffy by his name because he saved her life in Alabasta
My girl deserves everything in this world after all she went through
"And it wasn't even the poneglyph she was looking for"
Wano, a thousand chapters later: Are you sure about that
Despite all the amazing characters in the series Robin remains my absolute favourite to this very day. Even without her amazing development she would be because I absolutely love her personality, her dark humour and all her other quirks like secretly loving cute things.
Even though she doesn't like Chopper with Franky personality 🤣
Yeah and herself is very cute
But now, I'm thrilled to see her show more emotions and silly faces. And it's hilarious how she calls people by the nicknames Luffy gives them, even though she can remember their full names!
I also appreciate that she's the only Straw Hat who asked to join the crew without Luffy's invitation and survived two buster calls.
She's truly amazing, and I just love her so much! 😍
btw... Robin also has the highest initial bounty among the Straw Hat Pirates
Despite her past Robin can still smile thanks to her found family, and that means so much. I love Robin she is my favorite straw hat and doesn't get enough attention. She's been getting a lot more lately, though.
Robin is the reason I actually began watching one piece. Started during the enies lobby arc back in 2007 and still going strong.
“Let me go, I just want to die”
“I don’t have to listen to you”
Every time that gets me
Robin accepting and owning the title "demon child" reminded me a bit of Chopper and his character growth. When we first met him he thought he was a monster, and it was his being a monster that isolated and alienated him ... and he hated it. However, when we got to Fishman Island, he had fully embraced that idea, stating he would gladly be a monster if it meant he could help Luffy and his friends.
I’m a simple man. I see a fav TH-camr of mine talk about robins backstory I click. The story never fails to give me the chills
Your character analysis vids continue to absolutely nail everything that makes these characters great
Arlong Park is when I realized I would like the series long-term. Water 7/Enies Lobby is when I realized that I was witnessing peak fiction.
But as the music picks up, a bunch of falling stars streak through the sky, and Robin uses her powers to wake up the crew, so they can see it too
Such a beautiful way of showing how she grows to care for them, and see them as family
18:33 The panels or Robin Robinning around, that are usually silent, always make me smile
Enies Lobby made Robin into one of my favorite Straw Hats alongside Brook and Chopper.
Robin is my favourite straw hat.
She doesn't get the hype fights, but as a character rather than a fighter, she's just... A++, no notes.
She maybe in the sideline or the support crew but we and luffy need her the most
Robin is the strawhats' mom, she is nice and supportive
I have an unrelated theory that just came to mind I wanted to share with you. You know the story about an elephant being tied by a rope so it doesn’t try to move, when in reality it can leave whenever it wants to? I had a thought that maybe devil fruits taking away your ability to swim can be overcome. Just a random thing that came to mind. I know the idea of sea stone would negate that a bit but I’m not sure I thought it would be fun to consider.
Now that I’m caught up and depressed about it, your videos give me life Merphy, thank you.
Robin is favorite strawhat! Her strength and tragic past, her dark humor, that cowboy hat. Also I’m a Frobin supporter.
I love how Robin just GETS how Luffy`s head works, so she`s the one to "translate" things to him
Robin is my favorite fictional character. Her struggle with personal value brings me to tears just thinking about it.
Keep up with your AMAZING One piece reviews, Napier, thank you 😭🌊😍💖
She definitely knows more than what she has told the strawhats/ readers.
This is the type of video i look for to play in the background while i do stuff around thank youu
I don't think you would ever read this but I'm so thankful you gave One Piece a chance. Your one piece videos and takes are so good to watch.
You watched swagkage's video, didn't you?
@@mohammedmahfuri1078 i dont remember the name now. But the title was like "i read one piece in a month".
Robin is my favorite strawhat imo she is best female one piece character as well
I was crying thought the whole video 😩 thank you so much
Robin is the reason I majored in Anthropology
Appreciate the Robin love. She's my favorite character and in all honesty the reason I fell in love with one piece in the first place.
oh damn first sanji then brrook now robin
this is now the trinity of devastating backstories and most damaged strawhats
im guessing nami would be next
I like that your doing character reviews. Keep it coming. I can’t wait for whitebeard and Rayleigh and others
My favorite booktuber talking about my favorite character ❤
Love this video, Merphy. Robin is a great character.
She should read Worm. Great series, great mc.
God damnit Murphy I can't be crying this early in the morning! 😭😭😭
the wano thing was huge because it seems like we saw less and less assiny stuff because she was trying to escape from her past, and now it feels like she was forced to face it and come to terms with it
"History is where this series is going to end" danggg Merhpy these one liners. When's your book coming?
Small correction but it has Yosaku that introduced the warlords concept and structure in the first chapter of Arlong Park (ch 69), by saying that that are 7 pirates authorized by the WG and that not only Mihawk is one of them but Jimbei as well, and Arlong is someone that fought by Jimbe side
Robin is my favorite character in the series (other than Luffy). Pretty much for all the things you were talking about
The Enes Lobby moment is what truly sold me to keep reading One Piece. And why Nico Robin is my favorite gal in all of the series! Her Wano Arc moment is also incredible.
This series will always be amongst my top 3.
To be honest Robin is the only reason i kept watching the series. idk why but her story hit me like a ton of bricks
(it was still awesome, but yah had a big déjà vu there)
You with your library sitting behind you, remind me a lot of Robin (~);}
It's also relevant how in the timeskip she said that it was funny how she was trying to get stronger not for her own sake, but for other people that mattered to her. And now I even think about how at first she only called Luffy by his name and for the rest she referred to them with their role in the crew. Truly great character development.
damn, you can feel merphy's voice breaking when remembering the moment robin was about to shout
omg yesssss we need to see more of her fightt
Great character analysis
Robin's one of my favourite characters and you nailed why. 😄
I loved the dynamic of Robin and brook in wano in the manga and the anime. Hey have you ever listened to the soundtrack of the OP anime. Their great especially whole cake island. Very twisted Disney.
