- My LaGuardia High School Art Portfolio!
Hi! I'm Tracy, an art major at LaGuardia HS, who just wants to share her knowledge. I've been in the shoes of a struggling and worrying middle schooler who wanted to audition for LaG once before, but I could not find many resources online. With this video, I hope I've helped at least some people get an idea of what a portfolio might look like and what key details to hit. With that, good luck to everybody auditioning for the upcoming fall semester!
Best,
Tracy :)
AHHH HOLY HECC I GOT IN OMGGG!!! Congrats to you that you got in as well!! I literally found out an hour ago. I’m going for fine arts

Man my audition is coming up soon! This video has helped me a lot for a few months. Thank you for posting this! :)
I'm glad!! Best of luck!!! ❤️
Thank you, this helped me a lot and you are one of the few people on TH-cam who made this! >w
Yeaahh, when I was in 8th grade, I looked everywhere on the Internet for portfolio examples for LaG 😭 It was a struggle. So glad I could help though!😁😁😁 I'm so happy for your acceptanceee uwu
Oof I got rejected from it but it was my second choice.
My first choice was art and design and I got in.
Congratulations! Have fun in high school ;)
Tracy Rainbow Su thanks 🙏
I have a summer bridge program in a couple of days, meaning I’m going to meet the people who we going to be in my classes. And I’m very nervous-
@@chickennugget3043 YOOO Don't worry. One thing I learned about LaGuardia is that there is always somebody you can relate to and somebody to talk to. Everybody is nice and friendly. Just a LaG thing hahaa Don't worry and go have fun ;) Be yourself!!!!
Tracy Rainbow Su thanks. I hope things go right in the school-
Hope nothing bad happens for me like it did in elementary school and middle school
:) I'm sure Art and Design is going to be great. You just have to find your people! Focus on yourself and do what you like, and friends will follow.
I watched this vid a while back and it really helped! I applied to a specialized art hs (not the one that is being talked about here) and I actually got in! Ty so much for this vid
So glad this helped and thanks for taking the time to come back and let me know! Congratulations :^)
thank you so much for this important info! I was going to exaggerate a lot but this helped me know I can be simple, might be a year late but congrats onto getting into la Guardia and stay safe!!
Hi! Thank you so much, but I actually graduated from LaG this year 😅 however, good luck with everything you're doing and happy holidays!!! :)
I have some other questions sorry☺️☺️
1. How were your grades? I always get highest honors and 4s for the state tests (7th grade)
2. I heard that you have to write an essay on why you want to attend the school. Is that true? What should mention in the essay?
Lol no problem🙃
1. My overall GPA from 7th grade was a 95, and my state test scores was a 3 in math and 4 in English.
2.It's not an essay but just short response questions you need to fill out at the audition. I just wrote the truth about why I wanted to attend to school. I think it was something along the lines of the fact that I've been into art since I was a kid, I want to keep learning to better my craft, and see if it's something I would like to pursue in the future. It's honestly nothing too serious so just don't sweat it. 😉
Be honest and be you!
Becoming Tracy I really want to get into LaGuardia but i am incredibly nervous for the auditions! I really don’t know what to expect and if my art is good enough. This has been my dream school for years and I just want to be prepared. Have any advice for me or what to expect?
@@TracyRainbowSu Hi! I know I'm extremely late to this video. I also draw anime :) do art teachers at LaGuardia allow you to draw anime?
Yes, definitely. For your portfolio, it's good to keep it more diverse, but overall, you can draw anime at LaGuardia :) However, you will definitely have to be able to draw realistically for some art classes in LaGuardia.
Hey there! I'm gonna audition to La Guardia this year since 1- It's my dream school and 2-I wanna learn more about art so I can accomplish my goal of becoming a better artist and making my own comic book series! Some questions I have are:
1-Can we include art of our OCs? (original characters)
2-I have a piece that I did on wood with acrylic paints. Can I include it in my portfolio and if so, how?
3-Can we include fan art?
and 4-What is the process of the assignments they ask you to do at the audition? How should I prepare?
Hi! Yes, you can totally include your OCs. For your wooden piece, you can take a picture of it and put it in your portfolio. Fanart is fine as well, but just make sure to have a balanced portfolio.
As for the audition, they will take you to a room with items set up for your still life drawings and later a model will come in for you to draw. You can just practice doing 20-30 drawings from observation to practice. There's also a part where you have to draw a scene from imagination using oil pastel. Personally I struggled because I didn't have much experience with oil pastels. You can also bring your own art supplies, which is useful because you are probably more comfortable with your own things.
Good luck!! :)
BRO.. your profile pic... can we please be friends oh my god

I’m am trying to get in LaGuardia Rn and oooommmgggg I needed to know this!
AAHHHH I NEEDED THIS
I'm glad it helped!!😁 Good luck on your audition!:0 Be a boss 😉
@@TracyRainbowSu thx:)
If you don’t mind, can you tell me the audition process you went through because I’m going to get auditioned in a month. I want to be physically and mentally prepared. Btw this video was really helpful!
Hey! So the first thing I remember from my audition was just looking around the waiting area comparing myself to everybody else. Don't be like me. haha. They will lead you to a classroom with art supplies and first you will have to fill out a survey with general questions like why you enjoy art, how long you have been doing it, and stuff like that. It is nothing too serious and you should just be honest. During the audition, you will have anywhere between 10-30 minutes to draw still-lifes, do a figure drawing, and to draw something from imagination. I think the drawing from imagination prompts are still 1) a day at the zoo and 2) waiting at the bus stop. You can bring some of your own art supplies, which I totally recommend. Personally, I wish I had known that so I could have brought my own color pencils, pens, and pencils so I would've been a little bit more comfortable at least. During the drawing parts, I also looked around, comparing myself to others. I repeat: do not be like me!!! Just do you best and worry about yourself. :) You will probably be in a group with about maybe 10-15 others? If you want to practice for the audition, just practice doing still lifes and do entire drawings from imagination in spans of 20-30 minutes. Good luck! You got this!!! :)))
Tracy Rainbow Su Thank you so much!! But, um I really hope I’m not bothering you but for the imagination part, are you allowed to use watercolors and mix different kinds of medias? I’m really anxious and I really want to be prepared.
For the imagination part, they give you oil pastel!
How was the audition? I hope it went well for you, I was kinda panicking lol. I hope we both get in!
Hi im trying out lagurdia and Im wondering how do you show ur painted arts like on canvas
Alot of people bring the canvases as part of their portfolio or you can take some high quality pictures of them and put the photos in your portfolio. You can label them to let the portfolio reviewers know it's a picture of a painting you've done.
@@TracyRainbowSu okay thank you so much
Your portfolio is so much better than mine when we were applying for LAG lolll. Hope to see you in our Minecraft/club penguin graduation 2020
Hahaha thankss, even though I'm like the worst art major ever now.
and LOL Hate to break it to ya, but Club Penguin has been down since 2017. See you on Minecraft thoughhh! ;)
@@TracyRainbowSu yep looking forward to that sweet PDF diploma. Be safe! (Also, I'm pretty sure you're not the worse. I've seen worse)
@@lettuceboy4180 LOL Yes sirr. You too! Stay safe, stay healthy. My goal right now: survive to see those "I Survived the Corona Time" memes.
I’m sorry to bother but I have a few questions...
1. If I was absent for a month due to being in another county but with evidence and it’s excused will they still let me pass?
2. What do they mean by a human figure, like actually figures with no details like skin and face or something else?
Don't be sorry! I'm happy to help!
1. Yes, you will be fine with excused absences.
2. I mean actual humans, because there will be student volunteers who will stand as models for you to draw.
:)
Hey I'm auditioning 2021! Fine arts department really hoping I get in idk there is just something about this school that makes me look forward to years! You are the first portfolio I saw it made me want to give it a go, and hopefully show theirs in the future so many kids don't feel a bit clueless lol.
I'm so glad you think so!!! :) School is always what you make of it so go in with an optimistic attitude and an open mind and you will no doubt have a great time! Don't forget that people are good! Others want you to succeed so just do your best. Good luck and I hope you get in!!! ❤️

@@TracyRainbowSu sadly i got rejected for laguardia, but got accepted to arts and design!!! That was my first choice. Really excited!!!
That's so exciting!!! Congratulations!!!
@@wbge9405 I know this comment is 9 months late but I’m auditioning for LaGuardia and Arts and Design and was wondering what kind of pieces you included in your portfolio besides the still life, figure drawing, and self portrait?
Coming to this video after getting rejected... going to apply again next year. Thanks for making this video!
I rlly wanna go to a performing arts school for hs but I’ve been unmotivated on finishing full art pieces for the portfolio ;-:
I have another question (I have a lot since I'm nervous for this audition ;-;)
What is life like at La Guardia? What styles of art does it focus on? My art style is a mix of anime and cartoons so I'm scared that this school isn't fit for me if it focuses on realism or if they will accept me since my style is well...a anime-cartoon fusion.
(im asking this since you have an anime style too and you got in so im hoping they aren't too prejudiced against anime styles ;-;)
Life at LaGuardia is fun, but it also can be stressful due to the long hours. However, it also depends on how many AP classes you decide to take and your time management skills. Overall, it's pretty great because people are so friendly and it's nice to be surrounded by so many creatives. My 3 periods of art classes from freshman to junior year were always really relaxing.
In the first 2 years of LaGuardia, there is an emphasis on realism and learning the fundamental principles of art such as proportions and drawing from observation. However, anime style is definitely welcomed, but be prepared to move out of your comfort zone. After freshman year, there is a lot more freedom in what style you draw in. However, alot of people draw in a anime style and they are doing just fine in art classes:)
Thank you for your help I'm still in 6th grade but my middle school ms 297 has this thing called majors where like if like you wanna get into a visual arts hs then you pick that major and you spend more time on art or what you choose I was really worried when I saw what those kids in 8th were making but now I know that it doesn't need to be so extraordinary to get in
Yup :) Just do your best and show that you are willing to learn. You got this.
@@TracyRainbowSu thx!
This video was so helpful! Thank youu.
No problem 😉
I’m auditioning later this fall of 2020 because I didn’t make it in back in fall of 2019 when I was in 8th grade. I’m just worried because there are limited seats for 10th graders but I’ll see if I get in next year.
Which one are you audition for? I’m planning on auditioning this year
mMmm I was thinking about auditioning for art but im not too confident about my art and I barely have anything thats not cringe digital anime stuff and I also dont have the time; but I dont think its that hard to get in 💀
hello i dont know if your still answering questions but do you remember when you applied for the audition or when it was available? thankss >_
Hi! I believe I had to fill out forms to apply at the end of 7th grade during the beginning of 8th grade? LOL SORRY it's been a couple of years and my memory's pretty foggy on that. However, if you ask your guidance counselor, they should know.
Y'all, LaGuardia art major going into senior year here (The feeling of domination is phenomenal).
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
Pus, Dr. Lisa Mars resigned, and hopes to get a new effective principal!
Connie Ma Yo so I’m not worried about my art since my Dad is an artist and reviewed my portfolio, so in that department I’m confident. My academic though, for my state tests I got a 5 in ELA, a high 4 in Mathematics, and a 5 in civics. My overall gpa ranges from 3.50-3.67. Would I get accepted?
@@galileaia Definitely. But due to the resignation of Dr. Lisa Mars, there's a possibility of the arts being prioritized over grades.
If you want to go to LaGuardia, your passion and priority should be the arts but not grades. If you go to LaG but with no passion for the arts, why the hell would you want to the school in the first place?
What I'm saying is, you should worry more about your arts and talent rather than grades.
ive read some reviews online and some say that there is weed in the bathrooms and is cockroach infested¿ just wanted to make sure if its true or not lol. also is there a lot of delays in the subway when going to the school? i am a bit far away (queens) and is there any bullying happening fr tho?
Nah, no bullying really. It's definitely 100% better than a lot of the ghetto schools in Queens like Cardozo or John Bowne (haha I'm from queens too). It's a very friendly, open, and accepting environment. Perks of going to an art school: everybody is a little wEiRD!
I'm not going for LaGuardia because I don't live in the US, but I just wanted to compare my skills to others to see if there is a good chance I will make it. Which is why I'm looking for other portfolios that got submitted to high school art programs.
I’m sorry to bothering you , i have a question what did u put LaGaurdia on the form ?like u put it as your first choice or second because im scared that if i didn't get in to LaGaurdia that becuase i put as a second choice and thank you 😭🙇🏻♀️
So, for the normal high school rankings, I dont remember ranking LaG at all because it was a specialized high school and we had to audition for it. I dont remember ranking it on the SHSAT either. SORRY :( But, I wouldn't worry about ranking. There is a chance that you can be accepted to a normal high school, LaGuardia, and another specialized high school.
Thank you for takin the time to share what you drew to get into the school. can you share what items that is needed. I got from the video. sheet protector binder labels, clear pencils. water colors and brown ink pen? can you use canvas?
Applied to technical theater and didnt get accepted but i did get accepted to my first choice which was the main school i wanted to go to, your art work is amazing btw
Congratulations on getting into your first choice! Im glad you're going somewhere ypu want to be at :) AND THANK YOUUU
How did you audition for Laguardia? I'm wondering how to submit my artwork please and thank you! Congrats on getting into Laguardia your artwork is amazing!
Does anyone know if I can include canvas paintings?
yes you can! :)
Tracy Rainbow Su thank you!
Can you audition for various things like drama and art etc
Yes!
I'm going to audition for fine arts. Do you have more information about fine arts?
Is there anything specific you're wondering about?
Hey, I’m going to be auditioning this year for art, but I had a few questions about the audition.
1)What is the time limit for the entire audition and each of the three pieces we have to do?
2)Do we have restrictions on the materials we can bring to use?
3)Are we given a lot of items to draw for the still life drawing?
4)Does the scene we draw have to be from memory or imagination and do we have to use oil pastels for it?
Well, those are all the questions that keep bugging me.
1)So the length of the audition varies, but it should be about 2 hours at most.
2) Yes, they will have a table of still loves arranged and you choose what you draw/what you include in the composition
3)you are given about 20-30 minutes for the still lifes
4) yes, the scene has to be from imagination/memory and everybody has to use oil pastels
Hope this helped! :))
Tracy Rainbow Su Thank u so much
Of course :)
I have four more for questions you
1)Do all the drawing assignments range from 20-30 minutes or there a different more exact times for each of them. If so please tell me what they are.
2)Are you told what type of materials to use for the assignments or are you free to choose what ever you would like?
3) Can you give a few examples of what topics you were given to choose from or topics you think they might ask for us to draw for the imagination assignment?
4)What was part of the assessment of the audition aside from the audition itself.
Thanks again for all your help from before!
i’m applying this year and ik kinda nervous
Ahhh that's some exciting though. Good luck!!!
when do they give you back your artwork? i want to audition for both frank sinatra and laguardia and since i don’t have a lot of time for the auditions i’d want to use the drawings in my laguardia portfolio for my frank sinatra portfolio as well
They give it back to you at the end of your audition! :)
Tracy Rainbow Su thank you
Thank you so much for this!! It rlly helps me prepare for laguardia !!
No problem! Happy to help!😊
Hi just 1 question. What kind of drawings do you need to draw in the audition and how much time do they give us for the audition and how many pieces do we need to draw? How long do you at least have to practice to get good at fine arts and etc
So for the audition, they usually set up a table full of random things for you to choose from to draw. Usually it's stuff like a sculpture bust, tea cups, plants, vases, and fruits. Just the typical still life objects. A student model will also come in for you to draw in pencil and they will ask for a picture from imagination too as the last assignment. You don't have to draw everything to completion, but I would recommend paying attention to composition, filling up the page, and just getting the overall idea of the drawing down first! I hope this helps :)
How long it takes to "get good" is subjective 😅 It's more of a question of how much and how well you should practice. I would say, it takes a couple of years to get GOOD at it, but you can get decent at it if you practice every single day for a year or so. Start drawing every single day and watch videos on proportion, drawing from oberservation, anatomy, and lighting. If you keep practice based off of what you learned, you should see significant improvement in a couple of months. Don't worry about getting GOOD. Keep your mind focused on just improving and getting better with each drawing :) because being "good" is subjective. I strongly recommended getting fundamentals of drawing from observation, anatomy, lighting, and proportion down first though.
Tracy Rainbow Su tysm I needed this
Yup ofc, happy to help :)
@@TracyRainbowSu one more question how much time do you have in the audition and do you take the audition in different days or in the same day. Also, if you pass at least 1 drawing of the audition can you get in the school??
If I remember correctly, I think there's about 20 minutes for each section of the audition and all of it takes place in one day :) I'm not sure if it's going to be the same this year though. It is possible to get in by being really good at one section, but I would suggest practicing all three parts (drawing a human figure, drawing a still life, and drawing from imagination)
I going to be audition later in December and was wondering if for the human figure part of the Audition, do they model you hard poses to draw?
Not particularly. It would just be the model sitting in different positions or standing normally. Honestly, the models are just LaGuardia student volunteers, so they're gonna choose poses that are easy to hold hahaha
And easy to hold poses are usually easier to draw as well.
Thanks 🙏
I really wanted to go here but I'm already a freshman and I didn't apply in the fall. Plus my home is a few miles outside the Bronx :(
Aww! It's okay. You can still apply as a sophomore, but I don't know if that commute time will be worth it for you! Especially because you might get a schedule that ends at 4:09pm. If you really want to pursue the arts, you should audition sophomore year and just see how you feel once you get high decisions!!
@@TracyRainbowSu according to their website they only accept students entering 9th and 10th grade. also commute isn't a problem, the problem is that i live right outside the border that would qualify me for nyc public schools :(
ik this is late but- can you use works that you've done in school/art class in your portfolio? by this i mean the works you've done with little to no help
OK LAST EDIT IM SORRY: do you know if the testing part is on an easel or table
Hi! You can definitely use works you've done in school/art class. You can use any works that you've done. When I did the testing part, it was on a table.
I'm scared because I'm in 7th grade and I have straight As and my whole family thinks I'm REALLY good at art and so do my friends and they think I should go to laguardia and I want to go there too but im looking at other people's work and im NOWHERE close to as good as the people who get in so im scared im going to let everyone down im just asking for some tips to get better and I mainly do graphic design on procreate does that matter
Hey! First of all, I know it's going to be hard but stop comparing yourself to others. The main trap artists and honestly everybody falls into is this imposter syndrome. Understand that we are all on our own individual journeys and you don't need to be any of these other people to succeed. Stop looking for outside validation for your art and ask yourself if you like what u make, if u like what u do. Don't do this for anybody else but yourself! If you don't get in, it's fine. You know why? Because you don't need LaGuardia to so art. At the end of the day, it's about how many hours you are willing to put in to practice your craft. You are constantly improving as long as you out your pencil on paper each and everyday. The gods of art only got to their level by starting from level 1.
As for whether or not it matters that you do mainly graphic design and digital art, Freshman and Sophomore year at LaGuardia puts a lot of emphasis on the fundamentals of fine art. For example, 99% of freshie yr is going to be drawing from observation, practicing perspective, doing self portraits, and color theory. I do think those are important fundamentals to understand as an artist, so ask yourself if you're okay with spending two years drawing objects, doing realistic art, and stuff of that nature. People who hate that kind to stuff end up kinda miserable 😅 However, u do end up learning graphic design sophomore year and you have the option to take digital media starting junior year.
Good luck and I hope everything works out for you! ♥️
I’m applying to high schools for art, and I recently did a painting of a butterfly based off of a picture online. Is that okay to include? I wanted to include it because I love butterflies and painting is my strongest medium, but I’m not sure if they like seeing pieces based off of observation by picture?
Being able to paint by observation is a great skill and you should definitely include it!!!
hihi i just wanted to ask if you would recommend this school out of all honesty? like i’m already auditioning and can’t change my decision but ive seen the reviews and some say there is weed in the bathroom and cockroach infested? still planning to go to this school LMAO but just wanted to know haha 💀
LMAOO there's an insta acc called @lagisgross it shows all gross/weird pics of lag. I'm still planning to go too tho, LOL good luck btw :)
LOLLL Yes, I would still recommend this school, but like everything, it is not for everybody. The weed part is exaggerated. We have 4 bathrooms on every floor, and maybe 3-5 times a year you'll just smell a weed bomb on the 7th or 8th floor from the bathrooms, but it's not like you smell weed all day. However, the year before me was the year where there was a ton of druggies. Now LaG has cooled down. Definitely a lot of people go into bathrooms to juul tho. It's like a normal amount of cockroaches too. I'll see one every now and then, but it's really not that bad. Im just always annoyed at people spilling coffee everywhere and there not being toliet paper in some the bathrooms after like 7th period LOL
cowbag same LMAO,, and an intellectual i see, hopefully we become kpop friends? 😌🤚🏼

Ik this is late but im about to go to highschool and i wanna go to a performing arts high school. I do art and dance. I was wondering if i could do art and dance in the same year?
Not sure which high school you're applying to, but at LaG you can only choose one studio. It may differ in that school though
Ok does anyone know how to apply for 10th grade admission for this year?
Hey! Check out the admissions tab on the LaGuardia website. I think they're also holding an information session soon? Follow @SGOlag on instagram to stay updated :0
I’m a student at mark twain and I’m currently in my last year and I’ve been planning to submit my artwork!
Good luck! :)
That landscape is so pretty. I love how you showed your unique style. I love to paint w watercolor and draw animals so I’ll be sure so put those things in my portfolio. Also some of my art is on canvases. Do I just bring those in separately?
Thanks! :) Ya, you should definitely show off what you love! For what I've seen, there are alot of people who bring in their paintings in larger bags, so you can bring them in separately. I'll ask my art teachers tomorrow and get back to you with more detail though!
So I asked for you and yaaa. You would just bring your canvas in with a separate bag and the people will collect it with your portfolio during the audition. :0 Good luck with your audition!!
Becoming Tracy thanks so much!
Anytime 😁
Hi, i have three questions. 1, if we were to do the memory for our portfolio how would we show it? 2, For the Audition, what kind of still life do we draw? 3, Also for the audition, with the oil pastel do we draw figures or landscapes?
You don't have to point out which drawings are from memory (just so you know) because all your drawings should be refined to the best of your abilities, therefore, all your drawings should be a mix of your creativity and a bit of reference. However, you can get some labels, write what type of drawing it is, and put the label on the sheet protector ur drawing is in when u set up ur portfolio.
At the audition, they usually set up a table arrangement of different items for you to choose from to draw ur still life. Usually there's like tea cups, fake plants, fake fruits, etc.
During my audition, the pastels were given to me for the portion where we had to draw an imagery from imagination but keep in mind that you are free to bring in art supplies to use for ur audition. I did the landscape and figure drawings in pencil.
@@TracyRainbowSu thank you!
Yup!
Does the art major include painting
Yup!
Do art majors get to at least perform in one show at LaGuardia
Depends on what you mean by performing. LaGuardia does this show every year called "Rising Stars" and also the school musical that all majors are opened to audition for. However, each studio has its own form of performance, and art majors have art shows every year. I don't know what that's going to look like this year, but typically our art is displayed in our art gallery on the second floor, where students can curate their own shows, and also artwork on the lobby, on the mezzanine, and in display cases throughout the building. There are also art shows where artists paint/draw live.
im a tiny bit late but for the artworks, you have to write a short description about why you drew the art and more right? and how do you do that? what are your suggestions? thank you!
I believe that's for this year's audition because of Covid-19. I would jsut say, be honest, talk about why you added certain elements to your piece and how it contributes to the overall theme/tone/mood. Definitely also mention what materials you used. Good luck!
@@TracyRainbowSu okay thank you!

I’m auditioning in about a week but I have some questions:
What kind of paper do they provide you with?
How long do you have for each assignment?
What do they tell you to do for the still life and human reference assignments.
Hopefully I’m not bothering you.
LPS TisS I am also auditioning as well :)) hopefully we can see each other in the future haha
1) newsprint paper
2) about 20-30 minutes for each
3) there will be an arrangement of still lifes you can choose from and the figure drawing will be from observation, so a model will be presented for you to draw
AND OF COURSE YOU'RE NOT A BOTHER! Happy to help :) Good luck!
Tracy Rainbow Su thanks but may I ask what is newsprint paper? What kind of texture does there paper have?
o h m y ! Do I know you? Is ur name Angela?
LPS TisS it isn't haha
i know this is an old video but im creating a portfolio right now and it was very helpful. thank you
:))) I'm glad it was helpful!!!!
Can I submit digital artwork I make?
Yes! Just print out the image and put it in your portfolio.
hey, im planning to re-audition in the beginning of my freshman year, since i didn’t get in the first time. any tips or advice? what are the chances of me getting in the sec time i audition?
I'm not qualified to say how likely it will be for you to get in the second time around, but it will definitely involve improving your art skills. I can't say for sure without looking at your portfolio, but if u want, you can send me your portfolio on Instagram at TracyRainbowSu or email me at emailtracywhenever@gmail.com and I'll be able to give more useful advice :)

I’m also planning to re-audition hopefully we both get in for sophomore year
Good luck!! ❤️
Cookie Yellow yess good luck!! :)
Im super late and i got this video recommended...so i wanted to know if i have to draw more than one topic or more...??
Yea you will have to :)
When do 8th graders usually audition and when do they attend open houses? I’m so nervous about becoming an 8th grader and applying for high schools!! 😭😖
Hey! It's been a while since I auditioned so I am not exactly sure, but definitely email/call/visit your middle school guidance counselor to find out ASAP. :) You're gonna do great! Nerves are normal but don't forget to enjoy it too :)
Hi I know that this video was made four years ago but also on the LaGuardia portfolio is says now to make a fantastical sandwich, I was wondering if you did that or do we have to do it? Thank you!
Can you put photos that you took? Like photography
I could. Photos like ones I do for school or just my personal photography?
Im from NY and I’m planning To move to queens but I have a few questions,
Do I need specific grades to enter the school?
How do I enroll into the school?
To enroll what do I have to do? And if so what do I do?
The criteria for grade is about 80-85 average I believe. However, we have recently fired our principal, Lisa Mars (LOL). So with the change in administration, grades might not be as important in getting in. However, it is good to try to maintain an average above 80.
To enroll in the school, you should talk to your guidance counselor and register with your middle school's registration guidelines. Then you will receive audition details. :)
I hope my answer helps hahha
@@TracyRainbowSu Thank you very much for your video and comments, as a parent of an 8th grader who loves art this was so helpful. Blessings, Have an awesome school year!
I am happy to help and good luck to your child!:)
Hi Tracy, sorry for asking so late. This year we need 1-4 pieces of our own original artworks and I'm just confused about one thing. I have two separate drawings on one piece of paper (same side)and I want to know if that would count as one or two pieces. What do you think?
@bad_ch!ck3n Ok, I was gonna do that. Thanks!
If you want to submit them separately, I'm sure you can just take separate pictures of the two drawings LOL
hi! i have questions abt this school, so does this school prioritize students from the borough? and which borough did you attend middle school in, as i am applying to this school but want to know if they prioritze based on district and borough
Hi! No, they don't prioritize borough. I went to middle school in Queens but that shouldn't really matter. Good luck!!!
They don't prioritize borough.
@@TracyRainbowSu wait what middle school did u go to lol u look familiar
JHS189
Haha how about you? Would be kinda crazy if you actually know me.
Hello! Thank you for making this video, it helped to make me feel less nervous about doing the audition. I'm also doing visual arts and I wanted to ask, do you have to use the pastels in any part of the audition? I know you can bring your own supplies, but is a piece of oil pastel work required? Also, was the figure drawing portion hard or challenging? I'm not strong in figures. I think I'm better with color. Thank you, and have a nice day!
With the imagination drawing, I believe everybody is required to use oil pastels. The figure drawing portion might be hard for you since you say you aren't strong with figures. They don't give a super complicated pose, but it still requires a decent amount of drawing from observation skills.
I hope I was able to help! :)
@@TracyRainbowSu Thank you, I will practice observational drawing then. Wish me luck!
Hi , I want to ask a question ; so I didn’t take the LaGuardia arts audition the first time because I thought that it was too far away however I fit all the requirements and since always , I have a natural talent for art. I’m planning to go to the school to ask them if I can audition to get in. Can I still do this and can I get in? Because I emailed the school and I got a response however, I didn’t get another response after I emailed again. I really want to get in and hope that there is still spots available can I still get in? Btw , I love your portfolio it’s so beautiful ♥️
You can audition to get in for your sophomore year. I'm not sure how that process works, but you can probably ask your guidance counselor about it. But, yaa. You can audition again in your freshman year of high school and transfer to LaGuardia if you get in.
Thanks and good luck! :)
Hey there! My audition is next year and half-way done with my portfolio. However, I have a couple questions about the audition c:
1. How did you practice your 20 minutes human drills? How long did it take for you to get it?
2. What do you usually do during the audition other than drawing a human?
Thank you!
For the figure(human) drawings, there are websites that are dedicated to helping you practice. If you just Google "figure drawing times practices," you can find a bunch of websites that allow you to customize the length of the sessions and what type of models in what poses you can practice drawing. As for how long it took me to get it, it's hard to answer because, as an artist, I constantly see areas where I need to improve on. However, after like 3-4 sessions, I was getting more use to the flow. I would also recommend figure drawing tutorials on TH-cam to get some tips and tricks that make it easier.
Aside from figure drawing, the audition asks for drawing a still life and a drawing from imagination. Good luck!!! :)
@@TracyRainbowSu Thank you!
hey! so my my first two marking period weren’t that great but my other two marking periods were really good and i also have quite a lot of lateness is that gonna effect anything ?
Generally it's good to keep your GPA at least a 80 or above. 75 and above might be okay too becayse LaGuardia is really trying to focus on looking at talent not grades as much now. Don't worry about the latenesses. It shouldn't play too much of a part. Don't worry too much about what has already happened. Focus on the future because if your are a really great artist, you will be accepted.
Tracy Rainbow Su thank you so much honestly this made me calm down a bit 💞 i’m glad you got accepted !!
Aww I'm so glad 🤗 Good luck with everything and stay safe!!! ❤
ok so im now in 7th grade so I have a bit more time to practise, I was drawing since I was 4 and I'm 13 now and I'm still insecure about my drawings but I really want to get in :(
As long as you practice using different mediums and exploring a variety of subject matter, as well as improving your technical skills, you should be fine! Improving by drawing what you love and having fun also helps :) Good luck!
Adding on to gumball, the best thing for you to do is to draw daily and keep practicing :) practice drawing still life's, various points of perspective, and figure drawing along with the things you love to draw and you're set!
I get in, today :)
Omg yassss!!! You go gurrlll! 😊😊😊😊 How do you feel?
Can you transfer here even if your already in high school
Yes you can as long as it is before your sophomore year!
How many incoming sophomores does LaGuardia accept? (I heard it’s very little) I plan to audition later this fall so I wanted to know how many 10th grade seats LaGuardia has
I actually don't know the exact percentage but it's pretty low I think. You can probably find out if you look up some LaG statistics but I can't sya for sure haha sorry!! I know that it is pretty low tho. I've only ever met one sophomore transfer art major and maybe 2-3 sophomore transfers from other majors. It's definitely still worth a try!!!
guys im gonna make mine soon and i really wanna get in! wish me luck!!
YOU GOT THIS!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hey i have a few questions :)
1) Does LaGuardia accept digital art?
2) Is the a size limit on the portfolio pieces? A few of my pieces are 14x17 inches
LaGuardia does accept digital art and it's fine to bring in large portfolios!
@@TracyRainbowSu do I print out my digital art and put it in my portfoilo?
Yup :)
Does grade matter? Even though I am quite young I’m still quit worried for my future. Can the variety of art be anything (animals, insects, people, nature, landscapes, and also garbage pieces like plastic and cans, bottle caps etc)?
Your grades matter a little, but as long as you're passing, you should be fine. However, you should try to get at least 80s in your classes. If your grades aren't all 90s and above, I wouldn't stress too much. Just pass your classes. You should try your best for your 7th grade report card.
A variety of art can be different subjects, so yes, what you listed, and also different mediums.
I’m an 8th grader applying to LaGuardia and this genuinely saved my life 😭🫶
Do you have any tips on how to complete the "fantastical sandwich" part? You basically have to create the "wildest fantastical sandwich" and what that would look like to you. As someone who isn't very imaginative that like, could you give me some pointers on how to do this?
Hi!!! I actually never got this prompt, however I could still give you some tips. I guess I would start off with asking yourself what ESSENTIALS u always want in your sandwich. Bread... cheese... lettuce... tomatoes... some type of protein... olives perhaps? Then think of somethings that you wish you could have in every sandwich regardless of what else is in it that will be affecting the flavors. So... maybe chips? Maybe onion rings??? Peanut butter? Jam?? Candy??? Gummy bears? What other foods are your favorite? What's your favorite dessert? What about ice cream on your sandwich? I think developing an imagination is just being able have a large visual library of THINGS without restrictions. Nothing should feel too absurd. Go crazy! I think the prompt is just meant for you to have fun :) I wouldn't think too hard about it. Maybe make a Christmas themed sandwich? Gingerbread as bread... candy canes for a crunch... chocolate... gummies.. etc. :) Good luck!!!
@@TracyRainbowSu I haven't though about it like that, thank you so much! I'll def use some of those tips in my final piece :)
Good luck 😊
Hey what is the test portion of the audition like???
Hi! I'm currently a visual arts major at LaG. Not sure how they're being held virtually, but in my experience it's not much of a test but rather a written response as to why you believe you'd be a good fit for LaGuardia and why you came to audition / what inspired you to pursue the arts. Hope this helps :)
I have a few questions:
1:if we just moved to nyc, do we have to actually have to apply to a regular school to be eligible to audition, or can you just move to nyc, and apply directly online?
2: if we must apply for a regular school, how does that work? Do we simply go to that school and then apply for laghs a day after the school year begins?
I think that if you're entering the 8th grade in September, you should enroll in a middle school and apply through your guidance counselor. You just have to be a NYC resident and a 8th or 9th grader when you apply. Applications for high schools start in October and LaGuardia auditions are around December to January. When I applied, I just remember my middle school handed the forms to us and the process was straight forward from there. You'll probably find more specific answers at school.nyc.gov/enrollment
Can you get in with a all digital portfolio
Question: When should you start working on the portfolio? (I’m in 7th grade)
It really depends on how often you draw. I started mine really late, but at the time I already had a large body of work so I only needed to draw 2-3 more pieces for my portfolio. If you don't draw very often, maybe you should spend this year working on your skills(maybe draw at least a small sketch everyday?), then decide what pieces you want to draw for your portfolio over the summer. I would suggest for you to start creating finalized artworks around next August-September and that'll already be pretty early. However, you should continuously practice your drawing skills even if you aren't preparing your portfolio to be better :) Hope I helped!
I hope you respond. But will your grades matter more in 7th or 8th. As, i want to apply but my gpa average in 7th is 80 would that still be fine, or would i need to improve in 8th
Your grades in 7th grade will matter more since you will be applying in 8th grade and your 7th grade transcript is complete. Definitely do your best in 8th grade since your first semester grades might still be looked at, but don't worry too much! LaG is trying to focus more on talent than grades now so as long as you are getting higher than 70 averages (ofc the higher the better but that's the cut off grade I believe) you'll be fine, so focus on your portfolio! Your skills are what is going to matter most!
hi what month was ur audition because I read on the website that it opens Jan 24 is that true? can i still audition im a freshman
Hey! Right now I’m in 7th grade and I want to audition for LaGuardia! I know you did art and I want to do dance and it was different! But how did you audition go along and how did everything happen when you went into the school?
Hey! I applied for LaGuardia through the high school application you receive in 8th grade and LaGuardia sent me audition information and dates. The audition dates are different depending on borough, but I got an early morning audition at like 7AM I believe. It was a pretty smooth process and when I got into the school, it's just like how you would go to any other school, except you have 2-3 periods of your studio classes everyday. Hope this answered your questions :0
Tracy Rainbow Su This did thanks you so much
hi!! i auditioned a few months ago and i'm so nervous bc im finding out next week!
did you get in?
How did you do?
For rn bc of covid will they still have u go in person to do the drawings (not portfolio ones)?
Hey! It's been a while since I auditioned, so I'm not sure but definitely email/call/visit your middle school guidance counselor and ask! Or even call LaGuardia's admission office to find out :)
@@TracyRainbowSu ok tysmmm
@@minniestomboy Good luck! :)
Hi!! I’m looking to audition for performing arts and saw one the website some of the monologues, do I need to memorize a whole play or just 2 minutes of one? Thank you!
So this is from the LaGuardia website: " Prepare 2 one to two minute, contrasting monologues." Looks like you just have to memorize 2 minutes of two monologues :)
I wanna audition for Drama. Is it difficult?
I have definitely heard that drama is one of the harder studios to get into :0
I really want to get into LaGuardia High School. Do you know what I can do to stand out a bit?
Good question :0 I think to go above and beyond, try to show an understanding of composition, anatomy, proportion, lighting, and color theory. That just means a lot of practice but watch some videos from artists like Proko on TH-cam to improve. With a good foundation in those things, be sure to include pieces that show off your own style.
@@TracyRainbowSu tysm!
@@TracyRainbowSu I'm sorry I also have two other questions: 1) did you audition for another major and what was the process? 2) This doesn't relate to anything educational but did you get outlunch? Like going out for lunch?
Nope, I didn't audition for any other major and we didn't have an outdoor lunch but, I don't know how the upcoming school year is going to look like now for LaGuardia with Covid-19. Perhaps outdoor lunch is going to be something they'll have to consider? Hope I was able to help!
@@TracyRainbowSu Thank you!!!
are u allowed to put sketchbooks in ur profolio?
I dont think so :0
I used this video to get inspiration for what to include in my portfolio like your cat drawing and i actually got accepted to LaGuardia and another school!
I've been making my portfolio! Thank youuuu.
Awesome!!! Yasss!! Good luck!! :DD
I'm really nervous for auditioning!! when did you start getting this together?
Honestly... like 2 weeks before the audition 😂 of course I've been practicing art way before though.
I took pieces I already created and then filled in what I was missing with new drawings.
@@TracyRainbowSu thank you!
@@angelazeng2985 ofc!!! 😁
How old are you? And do they do maths in LaGuardia?
I am currently a senior, so I will be 18 this year and yes, we do have math classes! LaGuardia does all the core academic classes in addition to arts :^) I will make a video about my school schedule soon, so stick around!
did you just put all your artwork in a binder? i seen some people putting their art on a black paper idk how to explain it but ty for the video!
Yup, I put them in sheet protectors and then in a binder. Some people mount them on black paper to make it look more presentable, but that's irrelevant tbh. They care more about your skills. I know some people who just put their work in a folder and got in LMAO don't stress too much about presentation.
@@TracyRainbowSu sorry i replied so late omfg but tysm ur video is rlly helpful as well!!
