- Jerry West, one of the greatest players in NBA history and a Los Angeles Lakers legend, has died at the age of 86, the Los Angeles Clippers announced. West is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in NBA history as well as almost indisputably its greatest executives. His silhouette is used as the league's logo to this day.

As a Celtics fan since 1960, I have watched 10 finals featuring my Celtics and the Lakers. Nobody scared me like Jerry West--not Elgin, not Wilt, not Kareem, not Magic, not Kobe. Against arguably the greatest dynasty in sports history, he averaged (on 48% shooting): 31.1, 29.5, 33.8, 33.9, 31.3, and 37.9. As a point of comparison, MJ's finals scoring averages (also on 48% shooting) were: 31.2, 35.8, 41.0, 27.3, 32.3, and 33.5. Jordan averaged 33.5 in those six finals, West 32.9.
