      To me, Birdsongs are very soothing! Something about them being awake and singing so early in the morning soothes my soul and sends me back to sleep! BTW, we have some very LOUD birds out here in San Francisco, but I can't identify any of them! However, I know there is a wild nest of Parrots making their way across our neighborhood! I don't know what they're doing over here, in Noe Valley when their home is in North Beach, in the Northern part of the city, but a flock has made their way over in the South part of town and they chatter away in the afternoons as they fly over our houses! They are bright green Parrots and they're so beautiful!

    Interesting. I had always been told that it was for security. The birds called to each other to locate others of their species, just like horses nicker to each other and other animals "call". Sort of like saying, "Here I am. Where are you right now?" When they get calls back, they are reassured all is right with the world and that there were others of their species in the neighborhood. Whenever my parrot heard the birds, he immediately began calling to them. Of course, his call sounded like a screech rather than a song.

    • @SW13333
      @SW13333 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes in the daytime some of their calls are to say "I'm over here".
      Parrots will do that too. One of my parrots screeches when he sees a bird come to one of the feeders - I taught it to do that so I can put food out if feeders are empty. - Stephanie

      I think the “Here I am” theory is quite good regarding bird singing in general. The question of why it needs to be so darn early however - the topic of this video - is more complex methinks. :)

    • @dummy2027

      I have experienced this with multiple bird species calling to each other. Always there is one bird that calls out very early, almost still dark, then another bird calls back and then another bird calls and on and on. These birds are of different species by the sound of their calls. It's always like they are saying "I survived the night, who else survived the night". Different bird species can understand each other and care for each other. I also have a parrot, a rainbow lorikeet, and he talks to the outside birds and they talk back to him. I have also found that when a bird sings the sound is totally different than when a bird talks. The morning calls taper off after all the birds have had their say. One morning there was suddenly a deafening silence for about five minutes followed by many birds sounding very sad for a very long time; I suspect it was learned that a bird didn't survive the night.

    Hi Lesley!
    Quite an interesting topic to ponder and the findings of the study cited does make sense to me.
    In contrast to the wee morning hours I had discovered that at a moment during late dusk or twilight the outdoors becomes deafening silent for almost a half an hour. I first became aware of this phenomenon when I used to live on a mountain top when I operated a forest fire lookout tower.
    Each evening around 8:30 to 8:45 (June-July-August) the woods would become absolutely silent. Sitting on my cabin porch listening to this transition was truly fascinating. Then about 9:15 to 9:30 the night creatures would come alive offering up a new and different chorus.

      Bill, I can relate - I was once a radio-transmitter operator on a remote mountaintop. Not much to do except bask in the glow of the vacuum tubes. But I digress: researchers should record that silence and then use their fancy transistorized computers to do a spectral frequency harmonic analysis of it and find out what's making it. Just a quick thought.

      @@magichands135 I am absolutely convinced they are praising and thanking the King. It is a shame to us when we lack where they excel. This is not a religious act as it is not a religious act to thank a fellow man that assists another with a task that costs him nothing. It is a personal relation ship decision to thank those that help us or to give credit where credit is due.

    For me, hearing a bird sing in the dark early morning is comforting. It makes me feel less alone to know that someone else is awake too, and their songs always warm my heart. The most notable early birds near me include the American robin, northern mockingbird, and song sparrow. The American Robin wakes around 3 am in the spring to sing as you said, and he does so very loud and clear. The northern mockingbird is incredible as he sings straight through the night without a break in the spring. The song sparrow is more of a year-round early songster who sings at the crack of dawn daily outside my window; he’s really set on keeping and defending his glorious territory! I also found it interesting to note the evening birds that sing lullabies every sunset for each season. Where I live, the summer evening songster is the grey catbird. The catbirds stay until sometime between early autumn to mid autumn, where the white throated sparrows take over as the winter sunset singers. It’s funny to me that you see the white throated sparrows as summer birds whereas I see them as winter birds; we take turns enjoying their soulful songs. The spring evening bird is no doubt the American Robin.

    I have insomnia and am frequently awake @ or before dawn. In fair weather I sit on my front porch and listen to the birds sing. What a lovely way to greet the day, for the birds and the insomniac both! Robins are among my favourites. They sit on the hydro poles and wires and sing the most beautiful songs.

    This is a great, very interesting video. The researcher’s hypothesis makes sense, especially given the results of their study. I wonder, also, if singing early in the morning helps get their song heard by more females due to less noise competition from other bird species that may tend to rise later, and perhaps by other, less fit members of their own species (later risers). In addition, sound travels better in cold temperatures and calm conditions (I know you mentioned less windy conditions), and, as we know, it is almost always colder in the early morning before the sun rises than later in the day.

    When we had a house, with trees on the property, there was one Robin who sang the sun up each morning and down each evening. This male bird perched on one particular broken crotch of a tree, not high up, but well positioned. His song was beautiful and well timed. The morning and evening songs were different, happier in the AM, more somber in the evening.
