I so enjoyed our stitching time together Lorrie. You are such a joy and I am happy we finally met. I told Natasha it was her turn to tell stories the next time. 😉 I am excited about your Stitchy/sewing room! I love your wall color. I also enjoyed hearing about your grandmother. She sounded like a special lady. I loved my grandmother as well and miss her dearly. Have a great rest of your week!
She told me all the stories on the way home! LOL! She'll open up next time you meet. It takes her a minute to open up, but the girl talks just like you and me. Hugs sweet friend!
Enjoyed your video very much. I love that you 'rescued' so many doillies. The framed ones are wonderful. What a touching story about your grandparents. It brought tears to my eyes. Hope you accomplished a lot on your stitching room. -Kathy
Your grandmother sounds like she was a very special lady! Such a sweet story. Can't' wait to see your crocheted pieces once they are reframed. Hope you got all that paining done!
farm girl, Mama was an amazing woman. Finished up painting the trim yesterday, and picked up supplies to paint the chest of drawers. Little by little I am getting there, and it feels great!
Your earth piece is stunning. It looks like lots of fun to stitch too. All the best with your room. I love the doilies. They're going to look stunning.
+Ladybird Stitcher Thanks Lorna! I have already hung to of the framed doilies on my wall. They are so beautiful. The room is developing, and I am very happy with the results. Have a great weekend!
Your stitch day in Atlanta sounded so fun!! I can't answer any of your questions but enjoyed seeing all the old framed lace; hopefully Flosstube will help you get them looking the way you want. If I haven't already told you, I love the term "reverse stitching"!! Loved hearing about your grandma. Hope you got lots done in your room today!
Buckeye Stitcher, I reverse-stitch ALOT! My channel name should be Reverse Stitcher! LOL! I am taking a lunch break at the moment, but then back to work! I plan to keep filming my videos in the sewing room, so you all can watch the room take shape with me. i am excited about it!
Love that tshirt! ;) Your sewing room is going to be wonderful. And I loved all your stories. The elderly man selling his wife's things...pulls at the heart strings. I would have had to buy them too. Loved your stories about your grandmother too.
It is a great T-shirt! I've already been asked to show the complete shirt in my next video. I will need to wear it every time. ;) I am having a great time gathering things for the room. The pieces with stories are the best! I am hoping that it turns out just as I have it pictured in my mind.
Love that Jimmy Flosstube tshirt! How fun! I loved hearing about your grandmother. I had a very special relationship with my 'Nannie' and I know exactly how you feel! She meant everything to me and taught me so many things. The Angels are precious with so much meaning behind them and now they can be in your home! So sweet!
Your little sewing box looks like a bentwood sewing box from the 40's. love the ideas you have for your stitching room. Happy Stitching, hugs Patty BC Canada
Oh my! That beautiful story about your grandparents! So beautiful! How very blessed you are to have experienced that kind of love and special relationship that you had with your grandmother! I completely understand how you would feel such an emotional reaction to her home...so many special memories y’all must have shared! How lovely that you shared this very personal aspect of yourself with us. You are truly a remarkable lady with a beautiful heart! ❤️
Laurie, your video was touching and brought tears to my eyes. How fortunate to have such a special woman in your life in your grandmother. I am glad you have the angels back. They are a wonderful reminder of your grandmother. She treasured them I am sure. Good luck getting your room together.
Love your videos. You spoke so lovingly about your grandmother. That would make her so happy. I have a granddaughter and hope someday she will speak that way about me. As for the box, I, too, believe it is a shoe polish box.
I have my grandmother's sewing machine--a Singer Featherweight and it is so special to me. The way you speak of your grandmother I know that she'd want you to have it sooner than later. The angels you stitched for her are just so sweet. Good luck on your stitching room progress. Sounds like you have a lot of great ideas! ...Mary
maryhint21, Thanks for saying that that Mary. I am sure that you are right. I know that you treasure your machine as you should. It has special meaning. Thanks for sharing with me. :)
Another great video! I love love love the speak to the earth piece. So beautiful! I also miss my grandmother. She's been gone a few years and she was the one that taught me to quilt by hand. I have some of her doilies too. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing your treasures & tales of your Grandma. My grandparents are also buried with their baby who died. It took nearly seventy years for them all to be together again but it is nice to know that they are reunited now. God bless them. The little cloths that people used to put on chair backs are called antimacassars. Macassar oil being the name of old fashioned hair oil. Enjoy decorating your room x
Omigosh...you had me crying almost through your whole video! ...from the doilies, baby slippers and things you stitched for your grandma to your stories about her! I can see your stitching room will be filled with meaningful and sentimental things...someday your grandchildren will speak of you in the same way. Hugs...
Once again, you have touched my heart! My mom has dementia and that fact that you saved those handmade pieces is an act of love. Also, I'm going to be a grandma for the first time next month. The description you gave of your grandmother is exactly what I want to be. I've thought about it a lot and you so beautifully put it in words. The pieces you stitched for her are priceless. Thanks for all that you said today. Happy Fourth! Susan
Golden hair stitcher Susan, Oh! Congratulations!!! Just the fact that you desire to be a wonderful Grandmother means that you will be. I am do happy for you. A new child is God's blessing to you family, and will bring your family much joy. I share your happiness.
I loved watching your video. Your words about your grandmother and the elderly man and the legacy,... well you know. A bit teary - eyed. Thank you for the honest and loving tribute. If there is any sunflowers left I'd be interested.
I have to start by saying that I am so jealous for the folks getting together at that GA stitching gathering. And that Jimmy Flosstube shirt. Must give a shoutout to the shirt! :-) I love your progress on your Speak the the Earth and I understand the feelings about the Let Freedom Ring and seeing so many people stitch it and how that dampers the enthusiasm for stitching it yourself. Thank you for sharing all of your finds and the pieces you'll be putting in your stitching room. After talking with that gentlemen, I don't know how I would have left without purchasing a bunch of things. I loved hearing you talking about how much your grandmother meant to you and how powerful it is to be in her home. Never had a grandparent or family member with such a powerful connection in my life, but I so get how important they can be. Hope you have a wonderful weekend :-)
Thanks Arlene! I always smile when I see a comment from you! We need to have a GTG somewhere here on the East coast, midway between the Northern and Southern states. Maybe Virginia? I am attended a retreat next month, and the lady that hosts it will host a retreat at request if there is enough interest. How cool would it me to meet and stitch together?!? I will definitely ask her, and get back with you on that in a month or so. Have a great weekend!
Hello dear friend, I'm very touched by your wonderful stories. Easy to know where some your sweetness comes from - your grandparents. I love the beautiful stitching you did for your Grandma and Wanda (?name right?) and all the treasures you rescued. We have just the same taste in treasures. So wise of you to ask about the doilies and paint...I would just rip into everything and do the best I could. I also loved the story of the man with the doilies his wife made. Even though I love pastels, I know what you mean about them being dated for mats - I was struck by how beautiful the contrast is between the color of your walls in your sewing room and that rich blue. But then....I'm really drawn to colonial things. I noticed your chair in the corner too, I hope you enjoy the actual process of putting your room together, as well as the end result. Can't see through my tears from the tenderness of your stories - how I love them. Your are a living testament to the love and history and caring of a family. Next time....show us that t-shirt please!!! Did it say flosstube? Have a great week with love from Shari Witt in KY
Shari Witt, Thanks so much for your sweet words and compliments. I do owe most of who I am to my grandparents. They were wonderful hardworking people. I will be sure to wear my shirt next video, and will give everyone a shot of the front. Hugs to you!
Lorrie, I loved hearing about your stitching day with a binch of other stitchers. I learned how to crochet making doilies as a kid when my family spent a brief period in Honduras.I remember some of those stitches still. :) I so appreciated your stories about your grandmother, she sounds like she was an amazing lady. I'm excited and look forward to watching your sewing room take shape. Have a fabulous rest of your week.
What a wonderful talent you have! I have never crocheted a doily. I find them beautiful, and am happy to have the framed pieces. Thanks for listening to my stories and enjoying them. Have a great weekend!
Have fun creating your sewing craft room! I know what you mean when you're revisit places that you have created memories! The emotions are sometimes overwhelming! My mom and I had visited one of my LNS's and to this day I feel the connection every time I enter the shop!
Sounds like you girls had a wonderful time in Atlanta!! Love to get together with my stitchy friends! Can't wait to see your sewing room once it's all put back together! Just love the framed lace pieces you saved! See you next week! Happy Stitching 😊
We really did have a great time! Road Trips are awesome for getting to know your friends. They're stuck in the car with you for hours swapping stories with you. Truly awesome day!
Sounds like you had a great time in Atlanta meeting up with stitcher's, like a group of Rock Stars! Too much fun. I'm looking forward to seeing your room come together. You have a lovely style. Hearing you talk about your sweet grandmother was wonderful. You have some amazing stories. IMHO ... you have an adorable girls sewing box !! I love it. Have a great week. ❤️
Carolyn Crandall, I was a rock star group! Or at least that is how it felt for me. It was a little weird walking into a room and knowing most everyone there, but never having met them.
Thank you for sharing your story about your Grandmother. It really touched my heart. You were lucky to have someone so special in your life, which is why you still miss her so much. Hope you got lots of work done on your room and you get some stitch time too.
+Donna McKinney I finished the dresser, not as I had planned, but I love it and have already stuffed it with quilting supplies . My Grandmother was a very special lady. Thanks for letting me share with you about her.
Lorrie,Another great video. I love the piece you are working on.Those colors are simply beautiful! That border is so calling to me!I really enjoyed your talking about your Grandmother. She sounds like she was a wonderful Grannie.Just the way you spoke about her I think she would really want you to have her sewing machine in your new stitching room rather than sitting in her house..even if your Uncle is living there.I am a Grannie and a Great Grannie and I know I would so want my Grand babies to have anything I have that would keep me in their hearts and give them joy.Fyi...I had my Grandmothers old treadle sewing machine for years.....I learned to sew on it.....so many great sewing memories !Thank you for sharing !Happy 4th to you and your family!
Thanks for taking the time to type those words. They brought tears. You are right. That is what she would want. She would probably even tell me that I am being silly. She would want them used. Thank you, Thank you.
Those doilies brought back lots of memories for me. My Mom use to crochet doilies with the pineapples on them. I lost her when I was 25. My grand mother use to crochet also. lost her when i was 15 and was very very close to her like you were your grandmother. I still have letters she wrote to me they are treasures. Can't wait to see your craft room completed it will be worth all your hard work. Love your Jimmy Flosstube tee shirt too.LOL
Mischievous Stitches I certainly did and loved every second of time I spent with her and doing my best to make sure my grandkids enjoy their time with me also. They never want to go home , so guess I am doing something right lol She is my role model.
You brought tears to my eyes talking about your grandma. I totally know what you're saying. My great aunt Babe was that person. I loved her dearly and she was very special to me and I to her. She has been gone far too many years, but what I wouldn't give to have one more day with her. I buy a lot of old needlework very inexpensively and know what you mean about price and what goes into creating it. I look at it this way, I saved it and I have more money to save other pieces when I come across them. Your stitching room is going to be fabulous and have such meaning. Thanks for making your videos and sharing with us.
I am looking forward to seeing the progress on your stitching room. Loved the dollies, they were all beautiful. I was very close to my maternal grand mother
Sorry about the previous post getting cut off. I was also very close to my maternal grandmother. She lived with us off and on. A special memory of mine is every time my sister and I would spend the night with her we would sit on her bed and read the Bible. That was very special to me. Happy stitching!
Sheila Banks, I have similar memories with my Grandma. When I stayed the night with her, I would say my prayers at her knees. She was very special to me.
Of so, they're swapping stories of their crazy granddaughters. :) It was great meeting you Saturday! The group was so welcoming, and I felt right at home. I hope to meet the second D next time. Hugs!
I am so looking forward to see your new sewing room. All your treasures you got are going to look fab in there. I am now going into Pinterest to see about that doily curtains 😍. If you still have any left I would truly love one of the sunflowers 🌻 you have. I would treasure it. Many thanks 💕
What beautiful pieces you showed at the end. I totally understand the sentiments about your Grandmother, I feel the same about mine who left us in 2009. Hope you had a very happy 4th, even with the painting & staining. Another great video. ☺
Monica O, Thank You! I ad a great Fourth! Who knew painting could be some much fun? LOL! I k ow that I am enjoying the painting because I can picture in my mind the finished room. I am so excited!
Such a wonderful story about your grandmother. My maternal grandmother was that person for me too, in fact, I'm named after her. Love all your videos and stitched projects. Know what you mean about cross stitch pieces found in thrift shops, especially the personalized ones like a wedding or birth sampler, I just have to rescue them.
+Melissa Eggleston I am so excited to share the room with you all. Yes, I received many helpful suggestions on this video concerning the doily pieces, and am thankful for every one. Have a great weekend!
Oh dear Lorri, I certainly understand the feeling of "stealing". My story is long and includes my Mother and Grandmother, so I won't go into it. I wish I would have put that feeling aside a taken care of their things better while I was there. I love the pieces you did and awe moving the baby is so precious. I love the personally stories about people you tell. Your a very dear lady. Happy to see you filming in your new room and yes be fun watching it come together . Your wall color looks so much like our bedroom color. That's was not like me to pick a yellow Hurd color because I never liked yellow, but I love my walls. Thanks for another wonderful video, hugs Lana
+Till the last stitch Lana, I look forward to your sweet comments. I am very happy with how my room is turning out. The wall color is perfectly me. I plan to video in that room from now on, and I hope you'll come back and join me.
I feel very much the same about my Granny as you do about your grandmother. I was very close to her - she taught me to sew and crochet and I started cross stitching because of her. She always appreciated a handmade gift and I walked into a stitching store one day in August to pick out a chart and supplies to make for her (she did get it that Christmas). My husband and I bought my grandparents house when they decided to move to a smaller home here in Arizona and I still feel just a small twinge when we make changes in the house - be it painting or remodeling the kitchen! Looking forward to seeing your room done - I've just started on my own (daughter moved out in April). :)
Annette's Acre, Thanks for sharing your story. I imagine I would struggle with making those changes too. I hope that you enjoy working on you room just as I am. Have a great week!
I can so relate. My Nanny was "my" person in this life. She passed in 2006. I still hurt, I long to hear her voice again. What a special relationship and I'm happy in the fact you had such a wonderful relationship with your grandmother. What a wonderful gift! Good luck on your stitchy room! Mine is a work in progress as my older children have circled in and out. Once again it's MINE - I'm sure you can understand. Best of luck with your BAP (first time I've heard that term and I laughed out loud!) take care!
Hey Lorrie, LOVE speak to the earth! I have several doilies framed that I have reframed and how I do it is: I take a chenille needle and pierce the mat board and use (sewing thread same color as the doily) and just simply tie it on the back of the mat board. SO like two holes pierced in the mat board, go through with your needle and thread , loop around the doily, and then back out the other hole and tie in a knot. Takes a bit of time but that way not glued and won't discolor. I think Acrylic paint is acid free, material truly is and Aileen's glue definitely is. So you could do anything. :)
I found mat sheets at Hobby Lobby yesterday. I plan to give your suggestion a try, and bought small glue dots if that doesn't work. Thanks for your suggestions. I may email you with questions once I get started.
Such a nice video tribute to your Grandma. When my Dad passed away it took a few years before I could go back home. I just had my Mom visit me. My granddaughter lives with me now and I hope someday she will have the wonderful memories you had with your Grandma.
It is difficult to go back. I know that you cherish your time with your Granddaughter, and she her time with you. Your time together is so precious. Have a great week!
Hi Lorrie, so lovely to see you in what will be a wonderful space for you. Your plans sound great and I love the creativity you are putting into the project. I certainly suffer from the disease of 'I can do that'. Bouts happen daily ! Good luck with your painting and I have to mention I think that box might be for shoe polishes , my dad had one.. sorry to burst your bubble. It can be what you want though right... happy stitching my friend.
Alis Stitching Studio, I Can Do That is a disease that I can't cure, nor do I want to. 😀 Many have said that the box is a shoe shine kit. I need to research it further. I will be happy to know for sure, but will repurpose it into a sewing chest. 😀
Hi Lorrie, so sorry I couldn't be at the stitching meet up Saturday, but it couldn't be helped. So looking forward to the one in August. Love your stitching room. Can't wait to see it finished and all put together. I'll be taking notes for my new room in our new home!
halfstitch cross stitch, Yes. I was hoping to meet you there, but am excited about August. We're going to have a blast! I am having such a great time planning and decorating my room. I spent most of Sunday in there. I now have a couch and will be working painting an old chest of drawers this weekend to store my fabrics in. All of this makes me happy happy happy.! Have a great week Dena!
Oh, I fully understand the "I can do that" syndrome. My Pinterest account is filled with I-can-do-that ideas!! When I will ever have time to actually do them all, I don't know! The pieces you stitched for your grandmother will be so special in your new room. They hold such lovely memories. I imagine you can just pull the doily off of the mat. I wouldn't try to salvage it the matboard, just buy a new piece in the color you want. I would hand wash the doily, roll in a towel til almost dry, then gently iron it. You probably can attach it to the new matboard with tiny invisible stitches (if the matboard is not too heavy), or glue, but be sure it is non-yellowing. These pieces are going to be lovely, and it is even more special to know the story behind them and the name of the person who did them. Thank you so much for caring about them!
God bless you Lori, you are a sweetheart. I totally understand about your grandmother. I was adopted by mine and she was the most loving and generous person in the world. She will be gone from me 14 years on the 15th and I still have great difficulty riding by her house. I think I have only been past twice. Your Speak to the Earth is so beautiful. Take care.....Crystal
I loved your video. Sounds like you had a blast at the meetup, I'm soooooo jealous you got to meet so many stitchers! There is one flosstubers in my stitching group. I loved seeing the bare bones of your craft room, it will be fun to watch it come together, great finds to add to it. I love the old ironing board, there is one built into the wall in a cupboard in the new house, I haven't seen one of those in a very long time. My grandmothers, and one of my great grandmothers were great needleworkers and they taught me to love needles, threads and sewing machines. I have my Grandmothers sewing machine, and my mothers as well as one my Dad bought me out of the blue when they went to Florida one winter. It meant Dad was thinking of me and what I loved so it is very special to me. Also my parents got me one when I finished high school and started university. Since then I have rescued about 4 others from yard sales. When the movers saw all of them they couldn't imagine why I had so many. Lol. Some work better than others on certain types of material so I can't seem to part with any of them. I don't know much about framing crochet lace but hopefully someone will know what to do. Melissa, from Georgia who restores old needle work pieces could probably help you figure out what would be the best things to mount them safely. Have fun painting and making the crochet curtains, that will be interesting. My grandmothers had doIlies on the backs and arms of their furniture to help stop the wear and deposits of oils on them. I remember they had doIlies that they used sugar water as a starch to ripple the edges then they would put a glass or crystal bowl in the centre with flowers in them. They were so pretty and I loved to break the rippling effect which drove them crazy. I was a naughty child. 🤗🇨🇦🙋🏼
Lorrie, do you have an IKEA? I got a nice heavy table top and some tall legs for it, for my craft room. It's tall enough the I can cut things without bending forward. They have adjustable legs too. I would use spray glue... spray the back of the doily then press it down on the mat board. The Mira angels are lovely. Your grandmother sounds like a wonderful lady. I'm sorry for your loss. Good luck with getting the room sorted and happy stitching!
Unfortunately, the nearest Ikea is 2.5 hours away in Atlanta. I have been on the lookout for a rustic second hand worktable. I have found a couple that were a little too rustic. I have a little more time to look, but thank you for your suggestion. When I am next in Atlanta, I need to plan a side trip to Ikea. I hear wonderful things but have never shopped there. Have a great week Stephanie!
Lorrie I am trying to catch up on my videos.... and although I enjoy each and everyone of yours this one touched me so that I had to responded to it. You are not silly to feel such strong emotions when you go to your Grandmothers house even now. Both of my parents are gone and I feel like an orphan as I am no longer referred to as Reese and Edna's daughter. My Mom and Dad brought a new motor home when Dad retired and made a coast to coast trip. We live in PA so it was a coast to coast trip, anyway they filmed their entire trip going down the highway with the camera setting on the dash of the motor home discussing their surroundings and chitchating as married people do. My Dad has been gone for 22 years and my Mom 7 and to this day I have tried to watch those videos and when I hear their voices and see them I loose it every time. I miss them very much but I will have to try harder to watch them I guess. So forgive me for rambling on but just wanted you to know that you are not alone with your emotions. 🙂
+Rena Furman Thanks for sharing that with me. I feel the same way about my wedding video. My wedding was held at my Grandma's home. It's wonderful to know that others struggle with this just as I do. Hugs! -Lorrie
Lorrie I hear your heart girl. My Grandpa has been gone about 8 years now and I dreamed I was on his lap last night and I could still smell him (aftershave and baby powder) this morning when I woke up. That longing hasn't left me all day. Grief is strange but I'm so thankful for my many memories! Hugs and prayers to you!!
My grandmother has been gone for 35 years, yet I still miss her like her passing was yesterday. She & my grandfather gave me a feeling of safety and comfort during my very difficult childhood. She was a southern Kentucky woman who had 7 children of her own. My happiest memories are times spent with her. She loved me deeply and I loved her more than anyone in my life except my own children. My sister & I drove by her old house one day after she'd passed only to find that it had been torn down! We burst into tears thinking our childhood memories were erased. But now I'm glad that it is gone, I don't have to see it turn into a downtrodden area with strangers living there. She'll always be in my heart so she's still with me. I'll bet your uncle would let you move the sewing machine to your new stitching place if you asked him for it & told him how much it would mean to you. Men don't have those same emotional attachments to "women's things" like girls do.
Joan Clarke, Thank you for sharing your story with me. I know when I am ready, that my Uncle will happily give me the machine...when I am ready. Have a great week, and thanks for your kind words.
I understand what you mean about being thrilled and offended at the same time. I feel the same way. I look around at my pieces and think maybe someday, someone will buy mine for $8 just for the frame. Makes my heart a little sad. I can only hope that someone like you will find it and take it home and love it as I loved to stitch it. I would think that it's a child's sewing box too. It's the exact shape as the larger ones, and back in the day they used to make miniatures of everything for the children...chairs, tables....why not sewing boxes. I would go with that :) I laughed..my Rosewood Manor that I stitched was 18 x 18 when it was finished. Such a touching story about your Grandmother. Thank you for sharing it with us. She must have treasured those pieces from you so much.
Barbi J, I think we all feel similarly about our stitching. It's a shame that Needlework isn't more appreciated. I started that big piece tonight. Maybe I will work on it once a week until my current piece is done? If I am still working on it in the Fall/Winter, I can throw the extra fabric over my lap to keep warm while I stitch. 😀
Girl, you crack me up, I just bought the Quilt Sampler a couple of months ago. We like so many of the same designs. Miss getting to see you, so I have to watch you on youtube.
What about framing those doily pieces in floating frames? That way you wouldn't have to worry about mats because your beautiful wall color would serve as the background. Your connection with your grandmother was palpable as you spoke about her, it's clear that she left an indelible imprint on your heart. 😊 Leave it to McKenna to love the udders! She cracks me up but that piece is so rich looking, it is going to be gorgeous when it's done and framed...I can't wait to see it!
Purple CallaLeah, Thanks for you suggestion. I plan to use the original frames and have bought a mat. Floating frames are great ideas too. My Grandmother was an amazing lady.
I am sure that you are a talented stitcher too. I enjoy stitching, and everything about it. It's not that I am talented, but that I am rationale about it.
I always enjoy watching your videos! I look forward to watching your progress on the Americana Sampler (quilt squares). I stitched it a few years ago and yes it is HUGE. You may want to check the Rosewood Manor website for corrections- there are a couple of mistakes in the pattern. I didn't find out until after I was finished. Also in the red stripes you may want to consider using the lighter red color. Some stripes use a lighter red and some use a darker red. I think the blue writing gets lost in the darker red color- again didn't notice until I was finished and couldn't change it or didn't want to after stitching for 9+ months of stitching nothing else. Enjoy the rest of your week. I'm still trying to accept that we are already into July!
All of your finds are great! The box you found reminds me of a box my dad had. He kept his shoe brush and shoe polish in it. As for the crocheted doilies, I'd purchase a new acid free mat board in a color that you like. I have an embroidered hanky that I purchased in China. When JoAnn's framed it for me, they stitched it to the matboard - no glue. Not exactly sure "how" they did it. You can't see the stitches, they are tiny.
Thanks for the tip. When I have a piece framed professionally, I go to Joanns. I need to plan a trip there to speak with the framer about mats. Have a great week!
Lori, I can so relate to your feelings of homeplace. Both of my parents died in 2014 and we are selling their home. It's the hardest thing in the world. And I like you find it hard to be in the house. This weekend I plan on saving some stitches . oxox
Love the crochet lace. Love the little shoes too. It is possible the lace is glued om with textile glue. You have to search what type was used in those days.
Simunaya, Thanks for the suggestion of textile glue. I will research more information on it. I enjoyed your second video, and look forward to seeing more.
I loved the angels. I did a cross stitch piece with something that belonged to my Grandmother. I showed it in my last floss tube video, so I understand your feelings. About the stitching you have of the flower that you put in the coaster, I wonder if they were stitched to fit in a mason jar lid. So if they fit that size, you might be able to use them to decorate in jars to hold sewing notions or something in your new room. Just an idea.
Lorrie, with regards to the doilies...the proper way to attach it is to stitch it down to the mat board. No glue please. But if you choose to glue, use Alene's Tacky Glue. Alternatively, you can take that gun you use for stretching cross stitch and attach it to the mat that way. Then on the back side take acid free tape pull the little plastic piece tight and place a piece of tape over it to hold it tight. As for the mat, if the doily is glued chances are the mat is not acid free. A piece of acid free mat the size you need is not very expensive so I would recommend you buy a piece the color you want. Hope this helps. Love the wood ironing board! I have the exact opposite problem from you. I am short and I have short arms so Dan is always cracking T-Rex jokes. Good thing I like him so much or he'd be extinct exactly like the T-Rex!! Your grandparents sound like they were very special people. Thanks for the video!
Julie McConnell, I am so glad that you commented. I should have just shot you an email...next time for sure! I will take you suggestions, and appreciate you leaving them. TRex arms...LOL! Have a great week Julie!
Lori (not sure which spelling you use!), in another life, I was a custom framer and I did all the needlework pieces. I've done everything from doilies to christening dresses. My suggestion would be to have another piece of matboard cut to fit your frame. You can get exactly the color you want that way. Painting matboard may make it warp, because of the water in acrylic paint, and you may not be able to get it to look even, if that makes sense. I prefer to actually stitch the piece to the matboard, but you can glue it. I'd use Aleene's Fabric Fusion, NOT the Aleene's no-sew glue because it's just for temporary hold. I wouldn't try using spray glue because you need to be able to position it just like you want it. You can lay your doily on the matboard and use pushpins to hold it in place, then, working from the center outward, put a tiny amount of glue every couple of inches, till you get to the outside edge. If you only glue the outside edges it may sag eventually. I hope this makes sense! If you have any further questions about it, just let me know. Also, you might be able to find a display cube that's intended to display a softball or baseball, to display your vintage booties in. Just an idea. Thanks for a great video.
Donna Troutman, Thanks so much for your suggestions! They have been very helpful! I will let.you know how it goes, and will be sure to shoot you a question if I encounter a problem.
I use Aleene's original tacky glue with my stitching projects because it is archival quality. I don't know about the paints though but with fabric the tacky glue would work for that I think as well. Love all your finds.
I'm not sure how big the frame is, but will measure it an get back with you. I visited Hobby Lobby yesterday, and they have assorted mat sheets at about 3' X 4' in a few colors that you buy and cut mats from for $10. I jumped on it! I have flosstube comments to thank for that find. I hope to have them framed up this weekend. I will be happy to send you a one of the coaster pieces. I cry most times that I think about Mama. She was and still is a big part of my life. Hugs!
It's not silly, my Grandma meant the world to me and she passed 2 years ago but after my Grandpa passed she moved into town after a couple years. It was 10 years before I could even drive by the house. Shortly after I went by the house, not in it was destroyed by a tornado. My Grandma sat me down at her new house and told me she knew why I never came to visit her there...she said it was because in my mind he was alive there and I could tell myself he was there if I didn't go in. She's a wise and wonderful woman and I miss her everyday. She gave me the stitching I had done for her so I would have them to remind me of her. Sorry so long but your sharing made me cry. I'm happy they are all resting together.
Claire Noack,. yes your Grandma was a wise woman, and after reading her words to you, I think that they may be meant for me too. Thanks so much for sharing. Her words rang true to me too.
I'm coming back to say that I'm so happy your saving crochet also. Pineapple pattern crochet has been popular for years and it was popular again in 70&80 's. More framing of it in those years. I don't know name of adhesives used then but piece should pull lose carefully with out damage. I have sponge painted mats with my regulate acrylic craft paint, with no problem, if you decide to use brush, which I have not, don't use heavy paint. I don't know if it would make the Matt bubble. I like idea of fabric over Matt. Sorry if I've taken too much space, thought I could help. Hugs Lana
Till the last stitch, I am thankful for your suggestions, and like the thought of sponging the mats with paint. I could get an aged look to the mat, and I like the thought of that as a backdrop. The color of my room is the same as my dining room. It is a happy color. It will compliment most of my stitch pieces. Hugs to you sweet Lana!
I understand about not wanting to stitch on something that everyone else is already making progress on. The excitement of seeing the piece coming to life is kind of lost already. You could try starting the piece in a corner or section that other people haven't started yet, so you can make your own stitching discoveries along the way. :)
+Stitchin' Mommy I decided to start a different piece. I started American Quilt Sampler by Rosewood Manor. I will come back to Let Freedom Ring. Thanks for you suggestions.
I love your videos, and I must get me a Jimmy Floss tube shirt. I have a granddaughter whom I'm very close with as well. I hope that she will be strong after I'm gone, but she has worried about me passing since she was a young girl like 3 or 4... she is now almost 13. I always tell her grandma will never be gone, because I will live on in her heart.
Wonderful rescued stitching, I love the idea of a doily curtain. The little box does look like many shoe shine boxes I have seen around town. But that doesn't mean it was not used as a sewing kit by a child 8-P Happy 4th of July!
Palette PC, I am excited about seeing the curtain. I plan to continue making the videos in this room, so hopefully you will see that curtain soon. :) One mans shoe shine box is this woman's sewing box. :)
Ha! The "I can do that" must be a Lori/Lorrie thing for sure. I am so much the same way. Get stuff to do it, then it sits and doesn't get done. I put it away, find it a while later and either don't remember how to do it or don't have the desire to do it anymore. Ah well, so is life I suppose. Enjoyed this video as well.
hi this is my first time watching your vedios i had heard about you before but never seen any of your vedios any how one question then my opinions..Have you ever been a cheerleader lol your facial expressions look so much like a cheerleader crazy question huh ..any how loved your vedio your simple and how you talk about your grandmother was very touching..Yes I do know how you feel my mom passed a year ago on Mothers day it's so hard to Even come close to her home even thou my daddy is still their he is 94 years old and I should vist him more often I just caint I can't bring my self go up those stairs she is not their and even thou her home is still the same it hurts to be their ..so I totally get you on that one ..I'll pray for you because you seem to be a very lovely young lady who just love your grandma..I will continue to keep watching you on your channel and probably pray for you Everytime as well may the Lord see you threw your days protect you and be with you always..I'm sure your grandma is very proud of you as well ..Keep stitching and makeing vedios the world needs more of you .. Carmen
This is such a lovely and touching comment. Thank you so much! No, I was not a cheerleader. I had many school activities, but never that one. Have a great weekend, and thanks for the comments!
the pieces you were showing I have from my mom and my husband grandma who couldn't read. She just looked at pictures. the item you showed that you thought might be a child's sewing kit. It looks like it might to a salesman sample.
Got to love a cow who has three tits ;) You were meant to save those pieces and appreciate all the work that were put into them. I saved a piece of pulled thread and took the framed piece apart. It wasn't glued but had clear thread, fishing line, tacking it down. I know you can find acid free glue dots, not sure if clear, to possibly hold down the piece. when I reframed my pulled thread piece I didn't attach it using anything. It is just sandwich between the board and glass. I wouldn't think the blue board could be repainted but I like the idea of using fabric. I used a piece of raw linen to offset the piece in the frame.
Hey me again...just wanted to say: I'm a lot like you...I have a cigar box with my grandmother's hankies. I keep it in my underwear drawer and pull it out and crack the box just a little and take a big breath...they smell just like her still. Every time I do that, I sit there and cry ... I loved her so. I can't watch home movies either...not even of my wedding because I get depressed...stupid I know but truth. Have a great weekend!
Yes! I know just what you mean! I pulled my wedding video out a few years ago to watch with my girls, and cried almost the whole video. There are so many in the video that are now gone. Your not stupid at all for feeling those things. It makes you who you are, and I like who you are very much. :)
Lorries I don't know how to get it touch with anyone other than this. I love the idea you have to use crochet pieces to make curtains. I've crocheted curtains before in one piece, so your idea will be great . If you would allow, I want to send you some pieces I've done over the years. I like to do samples of patterns, sometime I make the whole pattern, sometimes not. If you agree let me know what to do. Thanks hugs Lana
Jo Gregoire, Hmmmm....should I tell them? Or should I keep them guessing?......LOL! There is lots and lots of heat behind that door. It's a South Carolina Sauna....a nice hot and humid attic.
Why don't you replace the pink and blue mats with replacement mat in a color that you like? I don't think painting them would work. It shouldn't be expensive to have the mat boards replaced because they're not cutting a hole in the middle, just cutting the outside dimensions. Red line tape, sold in the scrapbook section, may be strong enough to hold ??? The little "sewing box" I think is a shoe polish box. Chris' Grandfather had one and I "think" Daddy had one too. I know I've seen one used that way in our family. Your room is coming along and can't wait to see the "Grand Opening".
Yvonne - Night Owl Stitcher, I've decided to cover the existing mat with fabric. Now I just need to choose the fabric. I now have the couch, and will be painting my chest of drawers this weekend. I plan to store my fabric in there. One weekend at a time, I will get the room together. It is so much fun!
oh, Lil darlin! I heard what you did NOT say about your grandmother's things. i, too, lost precious family heirlooms when my mother passed, she didn't have a will, so my stepfather legally owned everything she behind, but I mourn the loss of many things I wanted to pass to my grandchildren! Sooooo, I understand how you feel, that sewing machine should be yours, but you can't go get it because you would be stealing. but in your heart, it belongs to you, and your uncle is stealing it from you! I sooo hear what you didn't say, and I give you permission to be mad and angry about it. so, cherish the things you do have, and make a will. so your granddaughter will have precious moments .
Granny Lyn, Oh no, that's not it at all. He would not deny me that. I am sorry that you had that happen to you, but that is not my situation at all. It is just as I said, and nothing more. Have a great week! Hugs to you!
You really need to take it apart. I worked in a Ben Franklin Crafts for years. I actually took doilies and tacked then down with needle and thread. We never used glue. You may have to get b ew mat board.
I did not know until now that follows were tacked down to mats with thread. What type of needle is used for that? Is it a special thread that is used? A salesman kit is something that I hadn't thought of. I'm going to Google the box later and see what I can come up with. Thankjs for the suggestion on the doily!
Mischievous Stitches I used just basic sewing thread and the needle I used various ones . I found upholstery needles and actually had to use pliers to pull it thru. it's not easy that's why it was expensive. I forgot to mention I have 2 dresses that were my mom's as an infant. My grandparents lived on the Prairie in Montana. The dresses are made out of muslim with the most tiny intricate crocheted bodices.
-Kathy
+Kentucky Woman Stitcher, Thanks! I love pieces with a story. It makes me love the doilies a little bit more.
Love that stitching room!! So happy you found all those treasures too!! Love all your sweet stories!
I have enjoyed collecting those treasures. They will make the room special!
Love that tshirt! ;)
Your sewing room is going to be wonderful. And I loved all your stories. The elderly man selling his wife's things...pulls at the heart strings. I would have had to buy them too.
Loved your stories about your grandmother too.
It is a great T-shirt! I've already been asked to show the complete shirt in my next video. I will need to wear it every time. ;)
I am having a great time gathering things for the room.
So sweet!
Libby Stitches, Thanks for the sweet comment, and for noticing the T-shirt. I just got it on Saturday. It's a hoot!!!
Your little sewing box looks like a bentwood sewing box from the 40's. love the ideas you have for your stitching room. Happy Stitching, hugs Patty BC Canada
Patty Smith, I am going to look that up. I am interested to know if you're correct. Thanks for the comment! 😀
I love your videos. Thanks for sharing your treasures. Can't wait to see your finished sewing/stitching room.
Stay Tuned...as I plan to keep doing videos in this room. You will get to see it step by step. I'm so excited!
My Grandmother was such a sweet woman. I was blessed to belong to her.
Thanks for watching and for your sweet comments. ❤
Laurie, your video was touching and brought tears to my eyes. How fortunate to have such a special woman in your life in your grandmother. I am glad you have the angels back. They are a wonderful reminder of your grandmother. She treasured them I am sure. Good luck getting your room together.
Wendy Dicranian, She was a very special lady who helpful to shape who I today. I am thankful to have been her Grand-daughter.
Love your videos. You spoke so lovingly about your grandmother. That would make her so happy. I have a granddaughter and hope someday she will speak that way about me. As for the box, I, too, believe it is a shoe polish box.
I am sure that you are building a special relationship with your Granddaughter that will last you both your lifetimes. 💗
Stitchin Maiden, Sounds like you had an amazing grandmother too.
Love your words about your precious Grandmother. Such a nice video. Love your Jimmie Flosstube t-shirt too!!
Gisele M. Kusmik, Thank you so much!
Penny Richardson, Thanks for that information. I did not know that. You taught me something new today.
Omigosh...you had me crying almost through your whole video! ...from the doilies, baby slippers and things you stitched for your grandma to your stories about her! I can see your stitching room will be filled with meaningful and sentimental things...someday your grandchildren will speak of you in the same way. Hugs...
I aspire to be the Grandma that she was. Most of my childhood memories are filled with her, and her love. Have a great week Susan!
I believe that they are all spoken for. I will check my notes, and let you know for sure. Have a great weekend!
This was a lovely video. Thanks for sharing your family and your beautiful heart. God's Blessings to you!
And to you Dee! Hugs!
Deb Ridge, Overwhelming, yes, that is the right word. The feeling has eased over time, but that is just how I feel when I visit her home.
Grandmother's are very special. I am glad to know that you had a special relationship with yours too.
The T-shirt is something extra special! LOL!
Thanks for making your videos and sharing with us.
karend525 CA , Thanks for sharing your perspective for when you buy Needlework. I need to borrow that positivity. 😀
I love your videos. You have a lovely personality that really shines thru on your videos.
Debra Locke, Thanks for the wonderful compliment! Have a great week!
Your fines are absolutely beautiful. I bet our grandmas are friends in heaven because they sound just a like.
Of so, they're swapping stories of their crazy granddaughters. :)
It was great meeting you Saturday!
You are the only one that has requested one. Message me your address, and I will happily get one out to you! 😁
Thank you! Yes, that is exactly how I feel about thrifted pieces. They need to be rescued! Have a great weekend!
I can't wait to see your room come together! I wish I knew more to offer advice, but hopefully someone already helped out :)
Joy Leftwich, Thank you! It is so much fun putting the room together! I hope that you are enjoying putting you room together as much as I am.
Love your videos! You do beautiful work! You should use the wooden sewing box like a "dough bowl" in your craft/stitch room!
Jill Ferrell, That's a great idea!
As always, thanks so much for sharing your stiyching and stories. Hope you and you family have a happy 4th of July!
Patty McReynolds, Thanks! Happy Fourth to you and yours!
Many have said that the box is a shoe shine kit.
Thanks for the suggestions. I had not thought of the glue yellowing. I will check into the cost of may board. Thanks again!
You brought me to tears talking about your grandma...you could have been talking about mine. ❤
Wanda P, Grandma's are angels on Earth.
Mischievous Stitches they certainly are!
Church Mouse Stitches, Thank you for the blessings. It is nice that you understand how I feel. Have a great week!
Christy Stitches, I dream of her sometimes. The dreams are always peaceful. Hugs!
You can sew the doilies to mat board. Just use a sharp Needle and matching thread. Hobby Lobby sells the mat board and will cut it to size.
Jen's Stitching Niche, Thanks for the suggestion. I will drop by HL and check it out.
Lynn McBride, You'll see me.sooner, rather than later. I will be there Saturday, and am hoping you will be two. Save me a seat beside you. 💜
I love your work!!!!! Maybe I can be that talented one day
I am sure that you are a talented stitcher too.
Donald Jones, Thanks so much for the tips! I will be sure to check the website and to consider changing out the darker red. Thanks again!
This weekend I plan on saving some stitches . oxox
Darby Logan, Have fun saving the stitches! I would love to see what Stitches that you save.
I would love to show you! Could I email you a pic?
Laurie, you are simply a joy to watch and listen to. So glad I found you on floss tube. Can't wait till your next video. : ) tina salentino
Thanks so much for your kind comment. I am glad that you're here.
Love the crochet lace. Love the little shoes too. It is possible the lace is glued om with textile glue. You have to search what type was used in those days.
Simunaya, Thanks for the suggestion of textile glue. I will research more information on it. I enjoyed your second video, and look forward to seeing more.
Thank you. I will do more video's
Stitching with Susie-q, Oh! I think you may be right! I will check it out to see. Thanks!
That's great. I never had any problems either stitching them or gluing them to matboard. Good luck!
I use Aleene's original tacky glue with my stitching projects because it is archival quality. I don't know about the paints though but with fabric the tacky glue would work for that I think as well. Love all your finds.
Jeanette Burke-Holst, Thanks for the suggestion, I appreciate it!
I'm so jealous of your Atl trip, that sounds like so much fun! And your Jimmy flosstube shirt
What you tell her is right. You will love always in her heart. Your relationship is so special. Thanks for sharing with me.
happy indepence day :) and i like that box you found, have no idea what it's for though :)
Whatever it "was", it is now called a child sized sewing chest. LOL!
One mans shoe shine box is this woman's sewing box. :)
McKenna at Every Stitch Counts, The linen is a great idea. Glue dots, perfect idea! Thanks for the awesome suggestions!
Till the last stitch Lana, If you have an email address, put it here and I will email you. I hope this helps.
lanafinch93@yahoo.com
Ok, I have to know.......what's behind the little door?
I was going to ask the same question. Such a teensy little door! Are there treasures in there?
Jo Gregoire, Hmmmm....should I tell them? Or should I keep them guessing?......LOL!
There is lots and lots of heat behind that door. It's a South Carolina Sauna....a nice hot and humid attic.
I want to know where you go to find these treasures...I don't have anything like that in my area😩
From all different places...eBay, gifts, local needlework shops, and pieces passed to me through friends.
Ah yes the 'I can make that' syndrome.....I think many of us are afflicted but sadly there is no cure...lol.
Not that we are looking for a cure...to be clear.
That's right! It's a syndrome that needs no cure. :)
It'll look awesome when it's finished! Clint won't ever see you unless he starts stitching!! Lol
oh, Lil darlin!
I don't think that is a shoe polish box. My dad used to have one and it had a place to rest your foot while you shined your shoe.
