    Great review.
I want to mention something about the show length. Short and sweet is how Cyberpunk stories were always told. Originally these stories are tabletop RPG scenarios. When David's whole story is over in 10 episodes, that's just faithful to the source material. Having the same crew for several seasons would absolutely not fit in. Cyberpunks find their legendary and/or tragic conclusion in no time at all.

The dub is notable for having Giancarlo Esposito as Faraday, as well as returning cast from the game for Wakako and Adam Smasher, and I could be wrong, but Delamain, too. It's not perfect, but the VAs returning from the game really lends those characters a lot more believability if you played the game. I think the problems with the dub are the attempt at adding stutters in to make dialogue sound naturalistic, which didn't translate into the performances, the characters just sometimes say things twice, and then some of the writing for the returning characters can be a little too verbose for their character, especially with Adam Smasher. The usual thing also occurs, a few lines here and there are said with the wrong intonation, but whatever, it's not like it happens with every other line.

    • @erkziltonz

The Cyberpunk setting has existed since the late 1980s, it was made for a Tabletop RPG by a guy named Mike Pondsmith (who appears as the radio host Maximum Mike in the video game), and while I was disappointed with the 2077 version of Adam Smasher, the anime version is 1/1 to how terrifying an encounter with him in the tabletop is. Mike created him as a one man TPK machine and Adam absolutely lived up to that in the anime.

I had an issue with some of the needledrop moments and the car scenes towards the end looked way to silly as everything was just floating around. The only character I really like was Rebecca but she just didn't fit in the setting for me and seemed more of a fit for Trigger's other stuff. David's character didn't get good until he started getting deep into the shit. He just seemed way to naive at times when he's lived in this world and acts super surprised and childish.

It's kinda cool that everyone gets something slightly different out of this. Lucy thought of David as a payday knowing that she would make 80% of the take and hand him over to Maine. She had no interest in whether David lived or died, as long as they did not make a mess in her apartment, and was perfectly willing to distract David with a show implying that they had a connection. David, on the other hand, went from working hard for his mother's dream of being choice Arasaka meat to Maine's dream of having a complete Merc team, and finally Lucy's dream of getting to the moon, even though he thought the moon was just a prison. Maine was really the only Cyberpunk with any 'conscience' but more from a "don't hurt kids" and "be a boyfriend" with Dorio and "give people a fair cut" point of view, in contrast to Lucy who was selfish to the point that it might slightly inconvenience her to share the minimum amount of the take, or that it might be inconvenient for her to try to save Pilar (much safer to just hide and let David take care of it), or work with the team regarding Tanaka, or do anything at all to help David with the team, or actually show her true feelings, but everyone else was manic-depressive. Lucy was the only one who was truly and purely evil throughout, even to the point of betraying literally everyone who helped her, but, the "moral point" of the "whole thing" was that only being 100% self-centered made any sense, since everyone on the team died from selfless acts, despite all of their rhetoric "the only one you can trust is yourself". Lucy was simply the only one who actually practiced that, was able to depart from any human connection, and avoid death, and ultimately reap the benefits. And that is, exactly, the vibe of Cyberpunk.

Like you said, people interpret the show very differently and I think what you're saying is a great analysis. However for me, the main message of the show can be summarized by docs line after David leaves for arasaka, "another tale for the next dreamer", really highlights (at least imo) the overall message. Although again, different meaning can be interpreted for sure

I get where this view of the ending is coming from but i kinda see it as a tragedy / cautionary tale, much in the sense of what cyberpunk is supposed to be about.
    Spoilers obvsl
With the super on the nose "im built different" the ending seems like an antithesis to exaclty that, and in the final episodes it was clear how that was gonna end. Not only did he get himself killed, but also his friends and left the one he loved most alone. The scene on the moon drives that home- Lucy got there, but shes alone, and clearly not happy about that. In the end his final moments were a glorious rage against a horrible society, but he really didnt change that much.
So thats how i see it; Society unchanged, his loved ones alone and unhappy or dead. Classic tragedy really.

I guess Trigger really shines the most when they're left to do whatever they think it's best; BNA was a project they owned themselves sure, but stuff didn't feel fresh in the same way the made it be in Promare, a project just a year before. I'm actually amazed that Edgerunners turned out so good despite the constrictive thinking they had to use for the anime there, the thing I usually think they are the weakest at

The reason the World of Cyberpunk is fucked up, is because in that universe Humanity decided to throw away their ethics and morals after WW2, meaning rampant technological growth via total exploitation of human and natural resources. The Earth was bled dry and humanity prey upon itself to advance its decrepit cesspit of a civilization. Which is why Night City is such a special place, because it embodies everything wrong in their world, and the Story of David Martinez is a story of a dreamer in the so called City of Dreams. Wrong people, wrong city. There is no happy ending for the dreaming ones.

Its been a long time since Ive seen anything this good and I can safely say its the best show ive seen this year, everything about it is just so organic. The characters here behave like real people.
For example, the couple could have left after Maine`s death, they had enough money at that point to start over somewhere else out of NC. But David wanted to be a legend, despite the various warnings from his ripperdoc as well as what he himself witnessed about cyberpsychosis.
Lucy on the other end aclimated herself with her luxury high rise lifestye even though at that point she knew about Arasaka going for David and presumed to be able to protect him against an army of netrunners on Arasakas payroll, which was pretty hubris on her part.
By the time they reached this point they were no longer being honest with each other about the problems they started to ignore. So much so that the trip to the Moon was even forgotten by the couple. I think their behavior translates well to reality, they really feel organic, just regular people facing their problems and dealing with situation in life as they happen.
These characters are actually beliavable, what they say and do feels real, they`re not like those single minded shonen protagonists that seem to have inhuman unbreakable will, these characters feel like real people.

Rebecca though (!). What a wonderful addition to the cast- I've never witnessed anything like this kind of friendship in the catalogues of anime and visual media that I've consumed in my life time. The show was excellently produced with a great story, but Rebecca and her will to break with what a "normal friend" ought to do (ie, tell David to calm his S*** and de-mod) she instead was a true friend- she knew that the height of the stakes - David would incur a 95% chance self-destruction If given his way. But she acquiest anyway, because not only would she have granted him almost anything on the term of friendship alone, but she believed in _his_ outstanding resolve to achieve his objective, and to deny him this would be to totally stand in the way [and be a crappy friend, and given these outcomes she came to one logical conclusion - give him what he asked for]. ...
.... I actually strongly identify with this particular situation and this relationship was a napalm knuckle sandwich; it hits hard and it sticks strong. To encapsulate their relationship in one single phrase :
"If you murder someone, a good friend won't tell anyone that you did it, but a truly great friend will help you bury the body" .. You are David, and Rebecca is that wonderous friend. Thanks for reasing.

You seem to be forgetting that she had just met him and recognized that he had the gear that her "boss" had paid for before he got screwed (again the whole "killing him" shit was mostly Maine's idea and only got brought up in the apartment).
Also Lucy was on the same page as Rebecca that David needed to cool his shit with the implants and even told him that to his face. I agree that Rebecca was easily one of the best characters in that anime (and pretty much any anime) but y'all are fangirling over her a little too hard =/

Lucy's solo antics got her caught up and fucked up, even though she was doing it for David, her lack of trust lead to the team's end ultimately. The way characters are drawn in certain scenes, like the first time David gets a nose bleed is very late 90s/early 2000s. It just has a cool, underground feel to it that anime forgot about. One of the things I love is the parallel with V (Spoilers, for Cyberpunk 2077, you've been warned).
David is practically a know-nothing kid at the start. His tolerance is his one benefit, but by and large he has to start from scratch, and he grows into an absolute unit of an Edgerunner, and his choice is to give his life for the people he loves. But he also *feels* trapped, when for he and Lucy, all it would take is for him to choose to walk away, and the two could have a happy ever after. He chose to become a legend in spite of that.
Contrast V: Regardless of lifepath, they're skilled, no matter what they're doing. A Corpo has training, the Streetkid is still skilled enough to be a Solo early on, and the Nomad isn't new, just Naive because they come from an entirely different environment they escaped because of clan politics. They're also a loner, more or less, until they meet Jackie. Shit happens, and this skilled character gets someone they could call a true friend, family besides, and more. And all it takes is one botched job for it to all go wrong. They get sick, saddled with something they shouldn't have that's slowly killing them, and in the process they come to find the meaning of their life, and even though they're a loner at heart, they come to discover that there are people who care about them, that they never have to face their problems alone. It too Johnny constantly in their head for them to learn that.
David's story is about how his death had meaning, and how he was happy to give his life for others. How despite having barely any dreams, he'd give it all if it meant the one he loved could have hers.
V's is about learning the value of your life, and what it means to fight for it, be it to the bitter end or clawing for every scrap of time you've got, and damn anyone who says otherwise. And knowing that there will always be people you love trying to lift you up.
Not to mention, on the broader sense of Cyberpunk as a setting: Johnny, Rogue, David, V...tomorrow it will be someone else, the next day someone else. Night City, it's the city of legends, a meat grinder - It doesn't matter the age, there will always be someone striving to sit on that throne.

Quick note about the dub, Faraday was voiced by Giancarlo Esposito (Gustavo Fring) and Falco was voiced by Matt Mercer (Mccree and Leon). The cast was amazing. The translation was also amazing. I still can't believe they said "I'm built different." out loud.

Idk if you watched the show but this is the moment David fell in love with her most likely. Lucy developed feeling overtime, in reality she was just trying to keep him from getting killed so the Sandevistan would go to maine who appears while they are Brain dancing and she basically betrays David. When David joins the crew they get to know one another and she looks at him and feels pity because "You dont make a name for yourself as a Cyberpunk by how you live, make a name by how you die." And she just feels that if he died it would be her fault. But she does develop feeling for him during the Jobs they work and etc. And in the end does fall in love with him and falls hard. And at the same time begins to open up more mostly to David but also to the crew and her cold exterior remains the same but I'm sure the crew has picked up on a few changes and her raging emotions when it comes to David or her skills in netrunning.

I like how a lot of these characters separate their professional life to their personal lives. I like to think the reason Lucy fell in love with him is because he was such a genuine person in a city filled with 2 faced parasites. (Kiwi and Faraday just to name two)

  • @ph-1012

id honestly recommend you watch it in dub rather then sub unless you can understand Japanese, the anime was clearly made for a very wide audience so they put a lot into the English dub, e.g Giancarlo Esposito (Gus Fring from breaking bad) as Faraday. the subtitles often mistake bits of slag and in-universe terminology for other things so it ends up being a little bit of a mess.

    • @蘿安娜
      @蘿安娜 ปีที่แล้ว

oh no no no. even if one understands japanese it's still inferior to the english version. the slang is either completely missing (no gonks and choombas) or feels very forced (tech names are translated, yes, but sound foreign and stand out very much as loan words they are - organically they would have been "acclimatised" by native speakers in time, as history has shown, but how each term ends up is anyone's guess so they are not "processed" in this way of course, so it's just cut & paste from english therefore alien feel). some things are also just "off" despite japanese being the OG version and english being translated.
i'm as weeb as weebs get, but this is the first anime where i ditched the JP OG and watched the EN DUB instead. it's not only good in terms of voice acting, if not superior (ripperdoc, becca etc.) but it is just linguistically superior, by far.

I’d argue there’s at least a few regrets on David’s plate. His end is a tragedy. He does not regret saving Lucy or living for his friends. But he 100% wishes he could’ve gone to the moon with Lucy. He even said so himself. If he time to properly communicate what he wanted and hear what other people wanted. Maybe a slightly better ending could’ve happened
I feel like cyberpunk is more of a cautionary tale than anything

    • @蘿安娜
      @蘿安娜 ปีที่แล้ว

yeah after watching it twice tho, i must pin this on lucy tho - he was trying to communicate with her, ask her to come back, telling her he needs her, team needs her, team also told her he needs her, and she still put ignore on all that and went stubborn solo like a 0 exp gonk noob - not only after working with a team for over 2 years she should have known very well it's stupid to go on missions alone, and that it's better to work with a team, have a backup, rear protection, additional pair of eyes looking out for you, but also she literally ignored david's needs and i can't understand why, her character seems so inconsistent throughout. she was clearly sensitive and shrewd, cleverly noticing david was living gloria's dream and it wasnt his early on, but then just went full on mute as she got closer with him even? this makes no sense at all. just before the last heist they had this talk, david again clearly says he needs her, and she makes a couple of bad ignore/denial/run away & hide decisions there then that make him think about breaking up even? and she just LEAVES him with that thought??? wtf.

    • @GaminexPro

Falco can give missions or be interactable, def prefer Lucy staying on the moon and being a radio comm cameo at best; The implication is that she's escaped that life so it'd be very weird to have her back in the life after everything. I'd like a mission where we just just send David's Jacket to her.
