I've been sharing this lesson ever since I first learned it in 1972 at sea on a USN Destroyer in the middle of the Atlantic. The cocky, smug, dud of a human being who shared it with me wanted desperately to be one 10th as cool as you, He couldn't pull it off. You are a master teacher and solid guitar player but a natural entertainer; one who has learned the "Secret" of being a great teacher. You have to hold their attention all the way to the end of the lessons. Fabulous video Sean! After teaching piano/guitar privately since 1992, I think you're the best!

Did we have too much sugar in our tofu this morning Sean? LOLOL 8) I am the worst guitar teacher on the planet!! Given that, about twice a year somebody makes me try to teach them. 8( What that has taught me is a lot of people have short attention spans, and they are impatient. So if I get a real beginner I first, try to find a simple song that they like. Second, everyone is different, so try and find a 1, 4, 5 chord, in a simple form, they can learn quickly. Like the E, A, B7 you just showed. Then show them the song with the changes, and get them playing it. When they can do that, alone, without any help it's called an "ah ha moment"!! LOL I send them away to practice that until they can do it on request. Everything I show them after that I refer back to that song and 3 chord progression. (so pick a good one LOL). If that helps anyone, great! If not, sorry just don't beat me up.
Great stuff Sean! Appreciate you!! 8) JMHO --gary

I think it's good to play chords all the ways they can be played. It adds character and different voicing to what it is you are playing. For one part of the song you can play a chord one way and then another way for another part of the song. It keeps your playing from sounding too repetitive. Thanks for sharing this. I got my start playing guitar in the key of E 25 years ago, so I already know much of what you show in the video, but it took me years and years of experimenting to figure it out because there was no YT back then. And yeah, that dreaded B chord is a summamabeach that I STILL can't get right after all these years!

I really appreciate your videos. Thank you. The guitar in standard tuning, begs to be played in E. The open E strings and open B are a great little power chord. No "expression" notes. No third to be sad with. No seventh etc. There in the middle, all nestled together, are three more strings on which any number of tri tones can be played up and down the neck for a huge variety of voicings. I invite you to try this one:
Index on A at 11, middle on D at 12, ring on G at 13. Nice little E7 stair step shape. Here's some magic: Move this down a half step and there's an A chord. Move it up a half step from the original position and it's a B chord. More:: Move this same shape down so it's centered on the 6th fret (index on 5th) and you can do the same little routine and walk through a I-IV-V progression still in E. More: of course it works up around the 17th fret.
Wait! There's more: if you drop the two third notes of the original shape down a half step the shape changes to a very popular three note power shape that in this position with all strings singing, is an Emin7. Move this shape up a half step and now it's Emaj7.
    Magic.

Re. the D# ( etc ) try barring across the 3rd and 5th strings with the 1st finger, then, on the next fret higher ( this works in any position ) 2nd finger on the 6th string, 3rd finger on the 4th string, pinky on the 2nd string. You get a legit dominant 7th +9. Mute the first string if needed. Try it at second fret, for a cool sounding G7, in the key of C major ( with +6 on the 1st string, no extra charge! ). Also, why use the pinky for your B major? Third finger is usually much stronger, if it can reach. Or just a normal A type bar chord? ( bar with 1st finger, then 2nd, 3rd, and pinky fingers on 4th, 3rd, and 2nd strings, two frets higher ). OK, if you just wanted to show off your pinky super powers, that's fine ...

Sean, nice lesson but have one nit-pick. To be consistent stick with 3 note triads all the way up. No need to use the 4-note D#m7b5 chord. Just the 3 note diminished will work fine. Here's the voicing: 0,12,13,11,0,0. As a beginning guitarist years ago, it confused me when 3 and 4 note chords were taught hodge-podge together. But I loved your lesson, I can show you how to spice up that 5th chord. Hint: drop the root a whole step.

Bsus4 is that chord you are sliding up to get, with an E bass and can be played at the nut also, instead of laying your pinky, play a barre chord using the 1st, ring and pinky placed on the B (2rd fret on A string), G flat (also called F#) (4th on D string), B (4th on G string) and leave the b and high E open, mute the low E or leave it open, if you want the sound you get from sliding the E chord fingering up to the 9th fret

Sean, wouldnt playing the 1 IV V in A, D and E be an easy way to play that 12 bars riff you were playing 3:59? i see clapton almost deliberately playing original E blues tracks as A covers (e.g. hoochie koochie man). ive always struggle to play the riff on B when playing in the key of E. any thoughts you could offer would be appreciated. cheers.

  • @zerospacer
    @zerospacer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

With Drop D, the E shape up the neck is great, you can fret the 6th string by using your thumb, doubling the 4th string, for a more satisfying sound (to me). You can also do a similar thing in D by doing 3 note chords on top strings, while including all 3 open bottom strings.
I switched to drop D on my acoustic this last year after 25 years of playing, and I'm not going back. Bar chords are easier and more enjoyable (you can even play 1-4-5 bar chords w/o even moving your index finger barre position--very nice). 6 string D-shape bar chords become possible. You can throw in transitional 3 string power chords anytime you want.
Love shapes with ringing open strings though, makes everything so interesting even though I usually don't know what I'm playing. lol

Wow 😳. I just learned that a capo on the second fret lowers the tone a whole step. Nobody EVER told me that! I always thought it went a step UP.
From E to F sharp. Check video at 6:50. Do you charge for lessons? Really?

When you remove the barre from the seventh fret barre based B it’s still a B Major but the 5th fret A without the barre is an Aadd2/E unless you mute the B string which is pretty easily done. It’s a super easy 2 finger A if you mute the B and just hit the D/G/B/E set of strings. Great “cheater chord”

I picked up a guitar 🎸 for the first time two years ago and have been using your videos to go from being an absolute beginner to advanced beginner thanks to you . I practice everyday and get lots of enjoyment from my acoustic six string guitar. Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge while having fun doing it

I have been using a pair of those minor shape open chords to close out a song in E major, and never connected until now why that worked. The more you know.

"Sounds great, smells even better" I'm lucky enough to own a few decent guitars but my Martin is the only one that has it's own distinct Martin smell. Not sure what they do at the factory but if they could bottle it I'd probably wear it.

Lower/higher, up/down, etc. is always in relation to pitch. Physical direction has nothing to do with music. Pitch has everything to do with music.

Coming along two years after this posted to say "a gentleman's B7" is a phrase worthy of outright theft. I plan on trying to find a use for it. (Also, the guitar tutelage is great too.)
