  • This was an old 1967 M416 Army trailer that I restored/modernized. I thought it was a cool project and a useful trailer for hauling stuff at home and with the Boy Scouts. I also wanted my kids to see and help their Dad do some handy work like I did when I was a kid.

Looks great!! I just got an M416 today and the project will begin soon. I plan on doing something similar utilizing the original wheels and military tires. I kinda like keeping the vintage look but adding modern touches. I am probably going to keep my bed solid and no rear door. Thanks for posting and showing us what you did. Total you have into the build? If its ok to post without wifey getting mad. ;)

Two questions.... was it hard to reposition the hand brake? How did you reinforce the trailer after cutting out a tailgate?

After cutting the tailgate the bed lost its rigidity. Those two rear stabilizing jack sleeves is 1 inch square tubing that are welded to the gray frame and run up inside and are bolted the rear inside corners of the bed.
That really firmed up the bed. The tailgate was reinforced by welding 2 inch wide x.25 thick steel on the sides and the lower edge of the tailgate.

How hard was it to add the tailgate? Any tips? Thanks.

I used a Mikita grinder to cut it off. I reinforced it by welding a 1 in wide piece of steal on the perimeter. I also welded the same piece of steel on the inside of the bed with a 1/2 inch overlap to stop the tailgate when it’s closed.

I've got a M-416 that I built for my Jeep too. I'm about $1,400 into my costs. How much have you spent thus far?

      I stopped counting after $1200

you really need to turn the manual brake handle back over, if you go off road it'll be hit by rocks & will engage teh brake on you unknowingly, nice build otherwise

I'm always surprised that jeep guys want the 416 trailer to go off roading. You can build/buy a much better trailer than butcher and modify a classic Army trailer to try and meet your needs.

I think because of that now every surplus seller ask $1,200 to $1,400 U.S. for a rusty as he'll M-416... still remember when found M-416 in pretty good condition for $500 and pretty beaten as low as $250 In ''marketplace'' section in MV magazine... Now vendors think all M-416 buyers are big wallet jeep owner-wanna be-a-real off -roader .

NJ DMV is really tough. They have so many rules since 9/11
