So if you had asked me in my high school and college days in the 80s if I was a Madonna fan, I would have said not particularly. Then it occurred to me during a recent drive to Iowa and back as I listened to my huge 80s collection, that she has about 20 songs in there! And I really like them all. She also had a great talent for reinventing herself every few years and changing her sound. I guess this is me coming out of the closet ... damn, I'm a Madonna fan!

Her single best track and album are Ray of Light: her first AFTER she’d taken desperately needed professional voice lessons -the smartest thing she ever did. Listen to her earliest singles: her voice is tinny, thin, abrasive, childish. After lessons? Full bodied, nuanced.
Ray of Light was also a step forward musically, her only genuine cutting edge album, the rest, though wildly popular, are just dance pop.
