Very useful video and well explained. Trying to understand all those graphs and aspects of the camera sensor is very confusing when you first start out.
All I could find was reviews of astro cams while what I wanted to understand was how to adjust shooting from DSLR to Astro cam. Then I found your video and the links you provide. Thank you.
Hey Joe. Hope all is well. A well detailed and helpful video mate, good stuff. To be honest I have never payed much attention to alot of things in astrophotography until lately. I tend to just wing alot of things just to see what happens.....Mayby I should pull my finger out and do some learning, it might actually improve my images Haha! Clear Skies buddy!
very informative, and lays things out in a easy to understandable format.. hope you get some clear skies soon... it is just hot here now and all equipment is inside my air conditioned house.
Great video Joe although sometimes I think I've gone way over my head at times, I've never been into any sort of Photography until I started astro back in late 2011 & back then I just used a modified webcam taking pictures of the planets mainly, but slowly I progressed to deep sky by myself getting a Canon 1000D but that wasn't enough so I got myself a modified DSLR which had its issues but kinda worked. I never started any sort of guiding until 2014 but I never imaged from home due to my garden being lit up by an inconsiderate neighbour that I had at the time so always went to a dark site. It's only fairly recently I've been imaging more regularly but I still only image OSC as I can't afford to go mono. Hopefully I can improve more over time & eventually go mono but I think that's going to be a good while yet.
Thanks Joe this time of year in the UK you don't get much time on any targets so with such limited data I'm pretty pleased with what I've been getting so far, the RASA has been a pain to begin with but I've slowly been taming the beast lol.

I use Sharpcap, and The Best Ea I found To Get a Low Noise Image Is Low gain and Long exposure, Otherwise I tend To Pick up a Lot of Sky Glow, I just Ordered the Optolong Moon and Sky Glow Filter, I will Try To Go for Longer Subs On faint Objects now!
There are just so many aspects of this hobby that it is insane!! Very informative Joe. I never took that deep dive into being a mathematician but I get by knowing enough lol. Also, you think I can take my scope over to your place for a week? It's hot as hell over here now! 😩

Measure in SharpCap. It will give you minimum required exposure for your skies, filter, camera and scope. You can increase as much as you want as soon as you meet SharpCap minimal requirements. It will only slightly improve pictures, but save a lot of space on comp. For example, in bortle 3 Ha exposure should be at least 30 min. In bortle 1 > 1 hours 🧐
@@JoesAstrophoto Do you have bortle 3? If yes, it is terrific. My is 7. Everything is simple: LRGB 1 min (could be 15 sec!) and SHO bandwidth 3nm 4-5 min.

Concerning gain and finding the sweet spot between gain, low noise, FWD and DR: Do you try several values and test imaging before you do your actual imaging session(s) or do you really set it once (by experience) and that's it?
Thanks Tully, I sometimes take test shots on targets I’m not sure about. I find it better to spend a little while to dial something in then to waste a night or more on wrong exposures.

Thanks Simon, and absolutely correct. I should have said at the gain where the HCG kicks in. I’m used to saying unity gain as the older cmos cameras I’ve used in the past usually had unity at that point.
Hey Mazz, it's just the 2600MM Pro. For some reason I think the outside diameter is the same as the 6200MM even though it's only an APS-c size sensor. Maybe for cooling?

hey maybe you know where I can look. I have a color cam and used 2 different filters ... how would I combine the master images ?
APP has a ton of tools for that kind of thing. It’s not free, but does have a trial version so you can test it out.
