He seemed like a fantastic person, I always heard he was like a father to everyone on set and he knew how to help everyone. Be at rest, you crazy diamond.
The Mighty Pickaxe96 i personally loved Dawn of the Dead because george put a significant emphasis on his lead character being a lady, not only that but the soundtrack for the film is amazing (Goblin; they composed alot of scores for his films). Day is damn near perfection, again, along w/ the musical scores but Dawn will always hold a special place in my rotten, beating heart.
@@benjamintheengineer I think you mean Day of the Dead with regard to the female lead, George was angry with himself for making Fran in Dawn of the Dead so pathetic.
Growing up in the Pittsburgh area during these times was so unique and George and Tom definitely shaped our lives. I watched Chiller Theatre every Saturday night, been to the original cemetery from Night, Dawn scared the shit out of me, and I saw my favorite movie of all time, Day, at the theater on opening night with my two best teenage friends in Greensburg, PA. Been to Monroeville mall to see the shooting locations, and even did the Day of the Dead shooting spots tour in Ft. Myers. It's just part of the culture living there during those times, and still to this day. These guys hold legacy status in SW PA.
The film's aside Romero was genuinely a person of great depth... substance.. character. Call it whatever you can relate too. I know it's rare and I'm grateful for the very real very tangible artifacts he left in his wake.
I've seen most of George's movies multiple times, my favourite has always been the '78 classic Dawn Of The Dead and a guilty pleasure is his underrated 1981 action movie called Knightriders starring Ed Harris as King William, Tom Savini as The Black Knight and has a cameo by Stephen King as Hoagie Man.
I first saw Day of the Dead on one of the cable channels, which I believe was the USA network. There was really no way to edit that movie to make it less gruesome. They bleeped out all the cuss words and some of the worst gore but it was pretty much in tact. It was very dark without the comic relief of Dawn. Two very different movie about similar subject matter.
RIP Mr. Romero! Thank you for your contribution to the film industry and especially the zombie genre ! Day and dawn of the dead are 2 of my favorite zombie films but my edge goes to day of the dead personally.
In loving memory of Joe Pilato and George Romero: An extended fan edit of the original "Day of the Dead", with more fx, updated for the times, and other fun changes. Enjoy! th-cam.com/video/1ndulDGv3Tc/w-d-xo.html
I love the original Dawn of the Dead 1979, George Romero is the father of the modern-day zombies in movies and TV like Shakespeare he was making statements about society through his art.
I wouldn't say "Director". That involves a lot of talents. He didn't have much of a technical eye for the job, not a very unique visual style nor in the directing of actors... His real talent was in the screenwriting, especially dialogue. I just love it.
IMHO, there's been a lot of amazing and talented zombie film directors who stood the test of time, like Lucio Fulci, Victor Halperin (White Zombie, which was often cited as the first zombie film), Dario Argento, etc. but i don't think any of them really matched up to the likes of George Romero.
4:21 I have a professor for game design who says TO THIS DAY that it was intentional and it's just not. Straight from George's mouth it was NOT intentional. That means nothing to dismiss it or the impact of it, but she kept saying "Directors make these decisions for a reason"
That's funny I was talking to a friend about the evolution of woman character in his movies and I exactly told him what Romero's said before viewing this vidéo ^^ I could have been Romero ! When night of the living dead was shot woman characters in cinéma were broadly clichés. Barbara's reminds me of women character in some Kurosawas movies. Maybe 68 did some positive change ^^ Romero always said that many of the famous choice he made were unintintional, which makes him humble. That's why I really love watching interviews of him.
So let me make sure I understand this. He's apologizing for not making strong female characters in night and dawn, and made the lead in day strong to make up for the weak females in the first two? That's pathetic. First and foremost, your #1 job is to make your characters entertaining so your movie makes money. I don't believe for a minute at the time George did the strong female leads to pacify all the woke Karens out there. Nobody gave two shits and a fart about that stuff at that time. BTW I liked day better than dawn for the reason that George spent more screen time developing interesting characters.
There's no accounting for taste I guess. I've seen all those movies literally dozens of times, they were part of my childhood growing up and I still watch them with friends probably once a year. Day Of The Dead is in many ways the best of the 3 films technically. The makeup and effects are excellent, the overall cinematography/editing/direction are all excellent, it has an atmospheric setting and a feeling of tension and claustrophobia throughout. I think where Day of the Dead falls short is in having too much dialogue in parts, but the dialogue is all very well written. I'd suggest watching "Day" again, as it is a slow burner that gets better with repeated viewings. Same for "Dawn"- it's probably the most action packed and entertaining of the original trilogy, playing out almost like a comic book. I've always found "Night" to be too primitive and it drags in many places. Even Savini's 1990 Remake of "Night" is superior to the original in many ways. So you see our assessment's of these films are diametrically opposed. But that's the great thing about film- we each like what we like.
@@jedi4049 Are you also saying the DOTD was better than NOTLD? That's what Gus is saying but if there are actually TWO people in this world saying that then it's time to give up on filmmaking because the audience is a bunch of fools.
Thanks for the movies and memories George! Your zombie movies will always be my favorite ones in that genre. May you rest in peace now.

another movie that just got more popular as the years went on. 1985 horror at its best.
.....I think G.A. ROMERO is the BEST horror films director.....I' m sure.....
scrapdealer06 they were art films disguised as horror films
Harvey Keitel who says horror can't be art?

Night of the Living Dead was fantastic. Dawn of the Dead was ok. Day of the Dead was SO bad, it's embarrassing. It deserved the bad press it got.
