The arpegiated rhythm section the piano plays is called the “montuno,” while playing along the root or fifth chord is called “tumbao.”
Salsa music is much more complex than what people think with is own structure and rules, and many transition chords.
The montuno can also be imitated by other instruments and sometimes that’s part of the musical arrangement.
Salsa is of Cuban origin.
