I've been working on a 2006 Honda Bf90A outboard engine which has a capacitive discharge, waste spark ignition system. I suspect a weak spark because my inductive timing light doesn't flash, or flashes intermittently, when connected over the ignition wires (this particular timing light flashes vigorously when used with other engines). After watching this video I went ahead and ordered a GTC 505. Hopefully it'll give me the scoop on what's going on with the outboard engine.
Interesting, just watched a demo video on the TA100 measuring a weed wacker. The weed wacker put out 12kV at idle while both the motorcycle and truck here only put out about half that at idle. That doesn't seem right when automotive ignition systems are supposed to put out higher voltage than a small engine magneto.
I'd just use spark checker and hook to block of motor and check that way or jab a t-pin to the backside of the appropriate connector/wires to check for igniters or the transistor doing its job, i believe it should go from 12v or 5v to ground voltage and continuously change like that with a good fluke meter and check with all other cylinders afterwards for a weak cylinder spark out of one of em, this is for automotive but i think it could apply to motorcycles too with a good eye as well. Man i don't like em' Snap on Multimeter but thats my own opinion, they look pretty and colorful but 2 year warranty vs. a Fluke is just outta the question. Fluke anyday. Those GTC tools are great, its like a amp clamp for a multimeter right? I can't 100% see if you're sticking the probe nozzle into the spark plug wires or if that tool has a yellow clamp. Magnetic maybe? Thanks Shane. Great teaching, wish i could go to your classes.
Hey Shane, long time subscriber here. I don't necessarily expect you to have an answer to this but on the off chance that you may know what my issue might be here would be greatly appreciated. I have a 1992 Honda XR250L. This is the RFVC engine. The issue I have seems to be a loud ticking sound coming from the motor. Not exactly an easy one to describe but I hear it's somewhat common with these RFVC engines. The motor ran low on oil to the point that it squealed. That's when the ticking started. Could the valves possibly have came out of adjustment? Maybe I'm hearing a chain guide? The chain felt tight when I pulled the top end off. Always appreciate your videos Shane
I have a question. What kind of signal should 2 stroke show? I got signal with 7kV top and it has spike and then waves. Not like in 4 stroke examples that I have seen that have step for some time.

@@fedor4491 No worries. Would you mind sharing links to what you decided to purchase? I've heard there are some pretty good deals on scopes now. As far as "useless tool". I couldn't disagree more. This tool is crazy fast go/no go diagnostic tool with measurable secondary ignition. I'm not aware of scopes in this price range having that capability to touch a wire of coil and READ the output all while comparing cylinders in seconds. Looking forward to learning what worked for you. Today's technology is so fast, one can't keep up! We sure love you taking the time to comment. Are you coming to the next live session? not necessarily... depends on if the motor is using resistive plug wires, and most CD ignitions like on a 2 stroke pump out 20-40kv!
I need that tool in my life! Got to see if I can find this in Blighty 🇬🇧
