Yay another bingo video! I might have to steal this Benjamin and conduct my own list… we’ll see. Lies of Locke Lamora is phenomenal! One of my favorite reads so far this year. Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss is a good one for the “bard” read. I can’t remember if the main character actually gets called a bard at any point but he definitely acts like one at times. I would love to see you read ACOTAR for the romantasy read (although I don’t think it would get you the hard mode) Babel I think would 100% count for hard mode because the university is Oxford.
Oh I didn't realise Babel was Oxford, that sounds perfect then, I have been hearing great stuff for that book! I have had Name of the Wind on my shelf for years and years, but the idea of starting a trilogy who's end is in such a questionable state is a bit scary. ACOTAR was on my maybe list for something to read this year, I may end up reading it still. I'd love if you did a bingo video!
I can’t blame you, I read Name of the Wind a couple of years ago and loved it but at the time I didn’t realize climate around Rothfuss. I read ACOTAR early last year, trying to convince my wife to read it and get her more into fantasy, and it wasn’t the worst thing I ever read (like I understand why people hate/heavily dislike it) it just made me realize that romantacy just isn’t for me. But I am glad I read it since so many people talk about it
After reading it I think it would of counted for sure, however I have another book in line for that square that I think is less ambigous on if it would count. Going to be reading Oceans Echo
For romantasy, I recommend Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco. Romace isnt exacly the main plot but its a big part of it. Its kind of horror/fantasy about vampires and theyre queer and polyamorous. Its literally queer Castlevania.
Horror Short story collections: Philip Fracassi's Behold the Void or Beneath a Pale Sky. Eldritch Creatures: John Dies at the End by Jason Pargin, Ghoul n' the Cape by Josh Malerman. Set in a Small Town: The Wayward Pines trilogy by Blake Crouch. Under the Surface: Wool by Hugh Howey, A House at the Bottom of a Lake by Josh Malerman, The Chill by Scott Carson. Author of Color: Octavia Butler, N.K. Jemison.
Great suggestions! I rad John Dies at the End, and I can see it's a good book, but I think comedy just never lands in novels for me so I came away a bit put off. I do have the first of the Wayward Pines trilogy on my TBR shelf taunting me for buying it so long ago and not getting to it yet!
Awesome! My first proper year, last year I only found it with like, 2 days left, so just did my best with what I'd already read. Keep me updated on your progress!
i love seeing these videos! welcome to bingo and i hope you enjoy! i really love seeing people who really love certain squares. i just watched a bingo video where they were very worried about Space Opera, and here you are super hyped!
I can address a few of your doubts: Into the Drowning Deep's action is primarily on the ship, not underwater, so it won't fit hard mode (though the spookiest scene is deep under). How to Lose the Time War's entire vehicle is a queer romance. Not the kind people mean when they say romantasy but technically fits the prompt text. This isn't advice but I'm surprised you're not doing a Warhammer for the orc square! Ancillary Justice is way darker and more serious than Murderbot, and also way better imo. The main character is a splinter of a Culture-esque ship Mind out for revenge. Anyway, subscribing to see if Ghost Station is worth the read, good luck with the blackout!
Wow thanks for the detailed response! I cannot believe I didn't think to do a Warhammer book for the Orc, or Ork now, square. I guess because there hasn't been much written from their perspective, but Brutal Kunnin' has been on my maybe TBR for a long time, 100% the book for this square! Thank you so much for nudging me in that direction :D Yeah I am really looking forward to Ancillary Justice!
For "romantasy", if u want/can do something more sci-fi I would highly recommend both of Everina Maxwell's books, which are both queer! The world building is done very well and the romance is also very good but doesn't overpower the speculative elements! I think it would be a more traditional choice than This Is How You Lose The Time War, though! Also, The Goblin Emperor is excellent!
I hadn't heard of Everina Maxwell, romance is a whole new genre I'd never looked into, Winters Orbit does seem like it would be interesting, lots of political intrigue? Love me some politics.
@@BenjaminsBookclub oh yes lots of political intrigue!! That's my favorite too and I had a blast! It does deal with abuse and things of the sort so I'd check up on trigger warning and such before reading, but it's pretty damn good!!
Conjure wife by Fritz Leiber is apparently mundane school, speculative horror, dark academia. I was thinking of using it because I generally don't love Dark academia but already have it on my tbr.
I am leaning more and more towards reading it, however I have settled on a Warhammer book for that square! I totally forgot to think about the Orks in Warhammer.
You know I have been eyeing that for a long time in the book shops, It always looked a little YA, but I hear that's not really the case. I just found a gift card for the local book shop in my wallet, left over from my birthday last year, so I may pick it up!
@@BenjaminsBookclub full disclosure, I DNF’d it. It did a think I hate where we start with new characters and then all the sudden they’re gone and we’re working with all new people. It wasn’t the young feeling content that was the problem though. Maybe some of the first people we met come back into play but I had got to like 65% or something like that and we were STILL getting new POVs and nothing of the old people i had got used to. If that doesn’t bother you then I wouldn’t be worried about the age range
Romantasy: I would count This is How You Lose the Time War as having romance as a main plotline. Dark Academia: Bunny by Mona Awad is speculative horror in a mundane school.
Ohh Bunny was on my TBR I just completely forgot about it! Very good recommendation! I'll deffinitly read This is How You Lose the Time War then, helps me stick to reading what I own!
Dies the Fire by SM Stirling, post-apocalypse with a main character who is a modern-day folk singer/bard, could also work for the survival prompt. If you enjoy the Pern series - Anne McCaffrey's Dragonsinger, girl goes to bardic school on Pern.
Il not done watching and we have 4 books in common haha but I HAD TO STOO to say YES READ MALICE!!! The faithful and the fallen is my favorite series! Soooooo good
For Romantasy, I think This is How You Lose the Time War counts! Another book I just read that is a horror-romance is The Woods All Black (and is LGBTQ+ for hard mode). Be warned there's a few real spicy scenes which I wasn't expecting 😅 I haven't read it yet, but the Gilded Abyss is a sci-fi book with an LGBTQ+ relationship that I believe counts as well.
This is my first year doing the r/Fantasy Bingo board, I made a huge list of hopefuls already for each prompt. Are you going to be updating us along the way or doing quarterly check-ins? Also if you haven't read the Silo books they take place underground and I binged that series last year, so so good!
Awesome! I havnt read the silo books, they have caught my eye though, are they a bit YA or more mature? At this stage I'm planning to do a video for each bingo book, I may group a few together if I don't have a lot to say perhaps.
You don't think so? I asked around on the subreddit and some people there seemed to think so as well? It's got romance as a main plot line, according to the comments. Oh I may need to jump on that one quick! Thanks :D
Easy win for a character called “Bard” =
Bard the Bowman in The Hobbit
Oh a good call.
I read The Lark and The Wren last year. I’m excited to continue with the series. It was a little slow, but I expect that from older fantasy.
Great to hear! Thanks so much for watching!
Yes read The Stand 🥳
I have so many of Kings books I need to read. Deffinitly getting better at long books so I think The Stand has a good chance of being read this year
