  • I played the original Resident Evil 4 - a lot. I believe the game has aged well, which is one of the reasons that I didn't play the remake until very recently.
Please join me for a few minutes while I compare the two games and give my opinion on which is the definitive version of Resident Evil 4.

Hey, thanks for that. I have been really trying to improve video quality. It has been a rough go at times. I went through 3 mics! lol.

Thanks. The remake is better in a few ways, but I still feel they should have remade Code: Veronica first. :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought the original was too long which I attribute to the awful pacing that becomes overbearing at some point in the castle.
There was a certain flow to the village that worked and even that had some issues, but the castle is literally just a series of combat rooms with no rhyme or reason and it tries to keep the intensity up so much that it just devolves into you constantly unloading shotgun rounds into hordes of enemies and taking so many cheap hits and that trend continues on into the island.
Sometimes less is more and that's something the remake understood while also drastically improving on every aspect of the original from its one trick combat loop of stun, melee, and knife to its level design, tone, characterization, and pacing.
I understood the original was a revolutionary game and a masterpiece at the time, but it has aged poorly given how much better the ideas it introduced had been executed and improved on by the many AAA games it has influenced over the years, including its very own sequels. It also left a lot to be desired from day one if you were a diehard fan of the earlier games and saw this as a betrayal of the series.
While the remake isn't exactly what I'd consider a true classic Resident Evil experience, it toes the line between action and survival horror so perfectly that it automatically makes this a much more enjoyable experience just strictly from a survival horror perspective as it somehow flows like a classic Resident Evil game despite its linear design and emphasis on action given just how much more player freedom and actual level design has been injected into every area of the game.
It scratches all the right itches of a survival horror experience despite how much it leans into what made the original so beloved by its audience, perfectly balancing action and survival horror in a way the original just couldn't do at the time.

I agree. This remake does strike a better balance.

OG RE4 was the last RE game that I've honestly truly enjoyed. The over-the-should action combat garbage has made this series a joke. I put up with it in RE4 because the game was good enough to carry it and it wasn't quite at that point yet as it is now (it was just the shift from static camera to over the shoulder) Hated RE5, RE6, RE7 was actually decent but didn't feel like Resident Evil and haven't touched Village yet. RE2 remake was decent, RE3 remake was garbage and this remake was "passable". This remake was absolutely not needed, it did nothing I would say made me enjoy it over OG RE4. It was just to cash in and it did that in spades (aka it made a ton of money). Some of the voice acting is downright awful (Ada) and some of the changes in the story were... alright? (Luis specifically. Didn't like the "change" with what they did with him as much... avoiding spoilers).
Overall, I'm just baffled why they didn't remake a game that actually needed it, like Code Veronica, or just remake a side game like Outbreak that was way ahead of it's time and would actually fare very well today. These "over the shoulder action shooters" just don't have "horror" in them anymore. RE2RM relied far too heavily on darkness whilst the original did not, RE3RM just dropped the ball all around, and I'll admit that OG RE4 was the beginning of the end for "horror" in this series, it wasn't scary at all and wasn't even "survival horror" at that point, as there was no struggle to surviving, you know, a defining feature of a survival horror. It was still at least entertaining. In all honesty, this series has gone the same way as Final Fantasy. They don't know how to make survival horror anymore (or appeal HEAVILY to newer generations of gamers), so they just keep remaking their cash cows for crazy money instead of going back to their roots while rarely adding okay games to the main roster.

I like the Outbreak games. Having those today, with the online support of todays consoles, would have made a lot of sense.
Also, it seems quite difficult for Capcom to focus on creating survival horror, rather than moving this franchise towards action with mutant enemies. One of the problems is they keep throwing more and more enemies at you. After a while, your kill count climbs to levels you would get in a game like Killzone 2. Sometimes less is better.

Yeah, I played the original a lot. I unlocked all the weapons, got 5 stars on all the mercs missions. Once you are able to skip the cut scenes in the main game, the original plays much quicker.

Great review-finally one that lets me know the key differences in a non-obnoxious way. I’ll eventually pick this up.
Hearing that it all flows better and moves faster due to a combination of factors is a relief, because the original did feel overlong at the time.
I do think they should’ve gone back and added more realistic enemy animations, but they’re passable.

One thing I noticed about these RE Remakes is that they pace the story a lot better and give better map layouts. RE4 Remake almost has a liminal feel to it, where everything is mostly the same even if the layouts have changed and new areas that replace old ones in cool ways. Like how the farm connects directly to the manor house without a load door. It's a seamless change that feels really good. Even the farm is different and flows a lot better.
The only downside I can say is the Krauser boss fight is.. well, not as good IMO and quite a fair bit cheesy.
The main differences are the map layouts, dialogues and pacing of the story, but also the gameplay changes make it feel so much better. I still prefer the old game in terms of hilarity and how the combat flows in that game, but the remake is objectively better.

Cool. It does get boring at times, but I find it better paced than the original RE4. Once you play through once, and start skipping the cut scenes, it tightens up quite a bit.

Yeah, that is why I said at the end that the remake is the definitive RE4 experience.
