    About The Alchemist:
    Every few decades a book is published that changes the lives of its readers forever. With two million copies sold in English and 22 million copies worldwide, The Alchemist has established itself as a modern classic, universally admired. This beautifully designed hardcover edition will be treasured by fans and newcomers alike -- it will include a slipcase, illustrations, a ribbon marker, deckled edges, colored endpapers, and a lovely to/from dedication page for gift-giving.
    The Alchemist is the magical tale of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. From his home in Spain he journeys to the markets of Tangier and across the Egyptian desert to a fateful encounter with the alchemist.
    The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories have done, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along lifes path, and above all, following our dreams.

    Alchemist relates to my life story. Started out working dead end jobs, thinking I was wasting my time, but all along the journey I found myself, situation which have inspired me to keep going and seeking more adventure. I'm still looking for myself, but when I find it, it will be me the Alchemist of life. Thanks Paulo

    My first and also favourite book of Paulo is the 5th Mountain. That was something, some kind of support, or confirmation, that I needed then. I didn't read a lot of books before, I was lost in life and it made me feel as if someone understood me. I also like the Alchimist much.

    Ive just finish reading this book. Fantastic, validates whatever i believe before. Law of attraction, positive vibe, the universe, I feel happy to be on this planet, and to have realized my mission on earth, all I need to do is not afraid to make mistake, go out and risk it, by hook or by crook I will make my dream come true. And when that day comes, I will be happy to go feeling satisfied.

    He is a great story teller. And has sold millions of books. I have read The Alchemist. A beautiful story with deep hidden meaning. yes Luck, Coincidence and Faith are very important in life's journey. However, what you may wish for and work for and have Faith for mostly does NOT unfold. We only can do our best and most importantly how we react to a life situation happening our way or not happening our way is in our power.

    Every state of mind is different,maybe not completely but no person has the same state of mind as another. Having this in mind and listening to mr. Coelho's words one can easily create in his mind a fresh new psychological perspective and view his current situation from a different angle just like a little beetle bumping on your face while you're sitting on the rear end of your window,changing fully your point of view simply because you make yourself believe it's a sign you should not ignore

    It's all well and good when you are happy, healthy, and free, to look around and see that the universe is speaking to you. Believe me, I have my share of "coincidences" and synchronicity. Nevertheless it is a whole lot more complicated than that. I don't like the victim blaming that comes of out this thinking for those who have to suffer wars, genocides, and natural disasters. Real knowledge and change and spirituality comes from honest self work, not just from attracting anything you want.

    A girl I was seeing five years ago gave me The Alchemist with a sort of knowing smile and said 'I learned a lot from this.' I have to say that I find it amazing that so many people have been fooled by his work. I was pretty naive back then, but I could still see through the message in The Alchemist. Firstly, I thought his style and ideas patronising and very simplistic. Then again, I'd already read books by Dostoevski, Tolkien, and Pratchett as well as many others. Dostoevski's existential theme shows the harshness of life for a lot of people and the psychological as well as physical turmoil that they go through; Tolkien's focus on the idea of mortality and immortality raises the question (in my mind anyway) 'What if I were immortal? Would I want to be able to live forever? No. But I don't want to die either.' What an existential paradox! Pratchett's comical satire highlights the ridiculousness and stupidity of human nature. But Coelho's ideas... The message that one should follow one's dreams is all very well, but tell that to a starving sub-saharan child. 'Follow your dreams, and the universe will conspire to... give you a bowl of porridge' which is probably the only dream that a starving person would have. That may sound harsh, but it highlights the pretentiousness of Paolo Coelho. To me, his message inadvertently gives a sense of entitlement that cannot realistically be applied to everyone. There is nothing worse than a writer trying to appear wise. The ones who actually are wise, do so unknowingly because they speak from the heart and are not trying to be anything else. The difference between Coelho and the above writers is that he tells you what to think, while the others make you think for yourself. It's a subtle, but huge difference. Give me LOTR, The Colour of Magic, or Crime and Punishment any day over 'By the River Piedra, I sat down and wept'. The title alone shows how phoney Coelho is. Everyone to their own though. I think people who have read and really liked Coelho's work haven't read enough. There is a lot of better literature out there, people! This guy is waaay overrated.

      Its just that when I was reading your comment it sounded like one of the comments that someone in my Master\PhD's class would make - it sounded more academic than esoteric. I will go to look up the authors who you mentioned just to widen my horizons. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

      @voodoohamster86 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sue Ridder Well, if you're going to dip into a Russian novel, I strongly recommend 'The Master and Margarita'! It's a satire/mystical romance about the Devil and three of his demons arriving in Moscow during the '30s to wreak havoc. There's also a sub-story about Pontius Pilate and Jesus. It was banned for a long time, but it's in my top ten favourite books. Here's a link to the first chapter: www.almaclassics.com/excerpts/masterand.pdf

    Read his book in 2005, the story held true in my life. I went through a strange life filled with twists and turns but everything took me to my divine treasure and is still taking me to bigger treasures. God is great and guiding my adventure. That is the ultimate truth of my life; which the alchemist tried teaching me , I remembered the book and marveled at its reality when things started happening that mirrored the book.
    This book is a map to navigate life. The next best thing on the hero’s journey.
    There is no such thing as random coincidence. Any coincidence is God intervening and assuring us of his power and presence.
