- How to repair a cracked radiator leaking coolant, So instead of spending a lot more money replacing the radiator this way you can Patchett and fix it temporarily until you get enough money or time to get it properly replaced so for now this is a good fix, Also is this will save you a lot more money and will stop the coolant leak for now.
thanks for watching
I just used this on my fiberglass bath tub that has a deep gouge and it worked perfectly and cured to a perfect color match, I highly recommend it for this application
I've done the same on my old car and my current jeep. No prep, I've gotten about a year out of the repairs. Actually going to do some prep this time! Good vid!
Thanks
same here brother. Let’s get this
just picked up this product. letting it cure this morning. 🤞🤞 wish me luck
How'd it go for ya bud?
Good. Still not a permanent fix but got a year out of each. Finally got a radiator from Rock Auto (no affiliation) and took the time to cram it in. Still one of my favorite patches I've found.
i fixed a crack in my BMW 330ci radiator with JB Weld - took a few shots but I now have a fantastic formula I recommend:
1. Get your engine warm and examine where the leak is.
2. Release the pressure and drain the coolant while it is still warm/mildly hot, but not too hot that when you seal the cooling system, it isn't blowing steam or air out of the hole you're trying to fix.
3. Once it isn't spitting but still warm - THEN apply the JB Weld and leave it for a few hours.
Applyig it while the tank is still hot causes the glue to be drawn into the hole, caused by the internal vacuum when the hot air cools and returns from its exanded state.
Exactly the same as when you fill an airtight tupperware with hot food and seal the lid while your food is still hot. By the time it's closed there's a vacuum inside ;)
Great advice , thanks
For Realerrs......... Thank you for the tip. My crack is along the side of the radiator. I wish it had been on top. Would be easier to get to and repair. Still gonna give it a shot. Thanks again.
Cool! (I mean hot then cool)!!!!
Please tell me how it went
@@jack8356 Update: The JB Weld eventually deteriated and failed after about 3 months.
After multiple recommendations I tried using the Barrs Stop Leak additive, and it has worked perfectly.
I was reluctant to use an additive but the car part wholesaler told me the radiator repairers in the area all use this product very regularly.
It's been about 2 months since I added the stop leak and I have zero issues. Apparently this stuff treats and protects the rubber seals in your cooling system as well
Ok I did the repair today on my 2015 Chevy Silverado. My crack is literally in the same side as yours. I spent alot of time hand sanding & cleaning mine. I didn't trust myself with an automatic sander. Once it was ready I mixed the stuff and I used a small art brush. I wanted to be able to get the seal in the crack. Then I put the fiber on top & added more. I decided to allow it cure for 24 hours. I will add an update tomorrow. I appreciate the tips.
No update??? 😀
@@lovetrump1088 maybe it didn’t work 😭😂
No update?
Followed your steps. Sanded, cleaned, sanded again, cleaned. Made the patch. Let it sit and cure. It worked! Thanks for the tips. I’ll order the new all aluminum rad this week so it never happens again.
How long to cure and use?
@@carlosalvarado140610 min set , 1 hour cure
Cool I’m trying this today. I also replaced the hose that goes to the reservoir with a clear silicone hose. I can see if the coolant is flowing to the radiator and reservoir tank.
thank you having the knowledge to help others mechanically lost. thanks keep up the good tutorials
My Explorer got a crack at the same spot . I will use this method to fix it.
Thanks buddy.
I use JB weld to replace the broken nipple on my plastic radiator with a brass one, it worked great but I did have to repeat the process a year later and every year from then on. But $5 each time was much cheaper than having a new radiator installed.
Yea, on my 05 MDX, the overflow neck leading to the expansion tank broke and i used JB Weld to fix it. It would send all the coolant to the expansion tank, but the coolant wouldn't return to the radiator when the engine was off. JB weld fixed it and now have the proper vacuum in the cooling system.
I repaired a leaking main radiator comnection. I also wrapped the area with wire to further stengthen it, then added the epoxy kit.
I’m in the process of using the same water weld as shown in video the nipples on my radiator on my Cadillac broke off due to fighting lifted Chevy for the center lane…. Hope this works 😅
I have a Nissan that has the coolant overflow nipple on the radiator fill neck. It broke and isn’t long enough for a clamp to secure the hose. From the comments, it sounds like this product will work for the repair. I’m going to slide a brass fitting over it and use the putty to secure it in place.
I had a crack in my radiator(only a year old) as well. In a similar spot as yours and was obviously causing a leak. I used the JB Weld Plastic puddy instead of the water weld, but I have a feeling either would have gotten the job done. It worked incredibly well much like it did any time I used other JB puddy. This shit is the TRUTH.
I just used the JB Weld plastic, I hope it works on mine
@@hectorpixs4870 update
Is it still ok?
@@hectorpixs4870_Too much heat.._
JB Weld is the GOAT
You can wet your fingers or gloves or tools you use to press the epoxy down and smooth the epoxy to keep it from sticking and coming off of the repair
Why are all these radiator fixes right at the top where you can reach it 😂. Mine, can’t even see it. 🤨
Ha ha , mine too . Right at the bottom
Found it. Behind the condenser.
Luck of the draw, mine came out on top..guess I'm a winner!
man fr mines at the mf side under a bunch of fuses and shii 😂
I had big luck found one on the top, also bad luck found one on the bottom, also greater news no radiator you can buy for my model. Lovely!
I am trying this. If this works you are a life saver!
Did this JB Weld (water weld) fix your particular radiator leak?
@@jeffgomez88 yes it actually did work, and I've been driving Jeep for a month now.
I sanded the plastic with high grit to make it rough and then cleaned with alcohol, puttied this around and let it sit overnight.
The next day, no leaks at all.
And I was having to fill coolant like every other day before this.
I have another smaller leak now elsewhere and ended up buying a replacement radiator for long term but this made the car driveable. I can't tell where the other one is is the problem
Very thorough 👍 and informative video 👍 thanks for sharing 🙂
How long did repair last?
It would be best to drill a small hole at each end of the crack first to stop it going further otherwise it will just continue to crack out past where you have repaired it.
Smart. Carpenter wisdom
Yea I used sum jb weld on my radiator hose and a crack on the radiator and it works like a dream! Been using for about 6 months now and only had to repair it twice
glad i came across this video... i have a small crack in the same spot as u had so im gonna try this.... mine isnt leaking to bad YET.... but before it gets cold i need to fix it and i dont have the 150$ for a new radiator... so...again... thanks for the info...
A new radiator will cost you 150, to have it installed will cost around 700
@@jacknife10000nope. I have a Lexus. $150 for part. The $250 to install
Jb weld is a good product for quick fixes like these, but yes I highly recommend taking the extra time to do the prep work first. I’m guilty for not doing the prep work before applying jb weld the last couple of times that I’ve used it, and i still got some good results from it. Just imagine how much longer it would last. Thanks for the video.
The VW 1.8T motors have a common issue where the coolant temp sensor goes or starts leaking. Being that it sits in a tube facing up so it can keep track of the Temps for the ecu and the instrument cluster often the case it leaks through the gasket as there is a clip that holds the sensor down with two split openings on each side of the pipe. Remembering vaguely years ago when it first came around someone said it fits but it doesn't stop the leaking so he gave my xwife an option as it was her car at the time and her father was footing the bill. Unfortunately 150k it has finally started acting up again. I only remembered when I has pulled out the sensor with a pliers after I pulled the pin out. So this time I'm gonna use roughly the same stuff just this waterweld version. Wanted to see what others thought. Thanks for the vid.
Thank you so much my brother I’m having the same problem and this video really helped I appreciate it take care peace
I'veha good luck with that stuff ! prep is key for a lasting repair !
I will try on my truck, it is worth to try. To replace with new one is 2450 CAD + laborer
Muchas gracias he confirmado una vez más que con ese producto puedo reparar una leve fisura en el condensador ( parte plastica del mismo ) y así evitar pagar grandes cantidades de dinero por una reparación
Saludos Marcos, si te funciono?
I’m actually trying this right now as I watch the video. So we shall see 🤞🏾🤞🏾 12/30/2021
THANKS FOR THE VID! Ive been wondering if it would work on a small radiator crack!
This putty weld just saved my butt from paying over 200 bucks!
Good educational vid. Unfortunately we don’t have JB Weld here. Will PC Fahrenheit Hi Temp work on plastic radiator; small crack
This guy don't turn car on to comfirm duh
How long did it take for the putty to actually get Hard. Completely cure. Let me know please.
Wow, the issue with the epoxy is if it can take the heat or not. The max heat it can take is on the package.
The old slow curing JB weld epoxy can take the heat of an engine block but not the exhaust system and it tells you what heat it can take on the package. However, I have never read if it adheres to plastic or not.
I have almost the exact same hairline crack in the exact same spot on my 2004 ford ranger. I was gonna replace the radiator but I dont feel like spending the money during this time. I'm gonna try this quick fix in the meantime. Thanks!
Did u end up replacing the radiator?
@@panthers559 yea I did that along with the thermostat. I then noticed that coolant was leaking from the water pump so I had to replace that. That was the main issue pretty much but it works great now 👍
@@thesaexplorer hell yeah good shit man 👍
Will it work if lets say the crack completely broke like will this fix a completely broken part back together?
I appreciate your good video. Thanks for taking the time to do it.
good work💯 I'm about to fix my Hummer 😁
Could you also fuse the plastic back together with heat?
Yes that's the proper way to patch with a soldering iron.
How long you let dry before you driving???
Hey I have a question !
I have an 07 ranger with what I'm pretty sure is the same radiator, and has a crack in the same place as the video...wondering if that's a weakness in this radiator model? Also if that's a sign thermostat is failing? But I did change my thermostat a year ago....
Guys after applying the substance for how long should I wait before driving ?
It's three and a half years now, is it still holding up or did you have to do it again?
Is that patch still holding?
I have an Identical crack in my 2002 jeep grand Cherokee. So thank you I subscribed and liked. Least I can do if this does work.
Did that cause over heat?
@evadventures972 it did overheat, but once I put the JB Weld on it, I never had another overheating issue.
You are my main man.
I can't afford a rad right now and only drive to the store, less than one mile.
I've searched this a lot. It got confusing.
Your vid is calming & to the point. Pre-prep is the most important.
I looked into Waterweld seeing your vid. Yep.
Heads up, someone commented to use a metal patch over the epoxy. 🤔
Awesome man good luck
I’m looking this up because I took my ranger off a dirt bike jump and nosedived into the ground. Cracked my radiator, and bent my power-steering cooler. Was it worth it though?
…yeah it was worth it
Cool thanks my is on the back around middle of the radiator. It is leaking out of it so ill probably sand it down and use the water weld and ad some something else on top after it. Is that a good idea?
If it’s on the plastic part just water weld can be a good temporary patch
what does the JB package say is the max temp it can withstand ?
300 degrees Fahrenheit
Please only use this product if you plan on replacing the radiator in the near future... I had tons of radiators come into my shop that COULD have been properly repaired for 30-40 bucks that needed completely replaced because people used this product... Sure it seals the crack but it also clogs the tubes... It will also reduce air flow if it gets between the fins...
I'm not replacing shit
Its meant to use on plastic. clearly people didn’t understand.
I have a mercedez benz 2013 s class twin turbo that the radiator is cracked on the plastic side which is also where the air intake hose is connected to. The crack is less than a mil thick and jb well original did not work and kind of because like too paste due to the heat and coolant chemical. I will do three phases to repair. So what do you recomend? I do not want to deal with a huge problem eventually. The crack is very accessible since its in the front and you can reach it by removing the air intake hose or front by sticking your hand. On my way to autozone to buy this product which mostly will not go into the radiator.

Love the level holding the hood up lol
How long do you have to wait before you can drive it after applying?
Followed the directions on the JB weld,, Think it was a 4 hour set time , but I don't remember
Well tried this stuff because parts store guy asked what I was fixing and told him had crack in radiator and I had the original high strength that I’ve always used but he said this was better, well I call BS prepared it sanded and degreased it and crap never got hard, so take my word for it wasted time the best is the high strength one with steel particles in in 3,700 +PSI...
You gotta let it cure for 24 hours.
So these putty sticks are made of two parts. The inner hardener and the outer putty. You have to pinch off roughly an equal amount of both and then knead it like dough to mix them and then apply it. If you only take a tiny amount you might not get both parts and it won’t harden.
I used the JB Weld Plastic Bonder, hoping it works.
How long did the repair last? Great video!!!
Still work great 5000 miles later
@@GK7GARAGE wow. I got the wrong kind apparently. Do u think it will work over jb weld plastic? & I found a second leak after I tried fixing the crack I found😩 had a lot of trouble sanding & cleaning it, side of plastic overflow tank with a/c pipes in the way
Can you use it on a plastic radiator
Still sealed ?
I used the JB WELD marine on mine today.. see how that goes. Holds up to like 5,000 psi or something insane like that. I sanded it , maybe not as much as you, but still, hope it works. Thanks for posting.
Can you tell me how it worked for you ? I would think the marine would be better. But there's 1 person to ask and it's you. Thank you in advance if you respond
@@joshuam122 Worked for several months til my transmission went out for the 4th time in as many years. I got rid of the truck.. So, it works, may not be the best thing ever, but it'll hold til you can get a replacement.
Did it last?
How long it be holding for
Good prep work cleaning the area w/ sandpaper and wiping w/ alcohol, this didn't show what kind of temperature the weld was rated for which is a concern. Since it appears to be just a thick epoxy, using a thinner, more liquid(fluid) epoxy may work as well for thin cracks. Glad your fix worked!
Regular jb weld plastic didn't work for me. Only worked on the crack right on top, it drips from the side to easy. Helped me find another leak though. Think I'm trying this next, haven't found many ppl having success with the jb weld radiator one but IDK, not sure about putting it on top of the other
I know this is an old comment, but I used this product for a similar repair today. It says it will withstand temps up to 300F, more than enough for this application.
Will this work on AC lines, in the car?
No
Will it work for a Bmw e92? Guess I'm gonna try it since it's just a tiny hole in the top and I already spend £250 for parts and pick up truck last week 😂
Hey I’m gonna try it on my e92 top radiator hose. Did you try it?
it worked on a crack that was 7 in Long on top and my 2004 trailblazer LS radiator
The top of my radiator is leaking water when i add some to the reservoir its coming out through the top of the radiator plastic part.
Can you put in on the metal part of your radiator?
No, it won’t work
Really!? Lol. I watched your video and didn’t hear the part where you said “plastic” in the beginning. So I bought the JB weld and put it on the top on the radiator that had a crack! Would you know a solution to take off?
Isatora Faaofo I don’t think you can take it off
Smh.. so I placed like a good amount of the product on the crack on the radiator. What’s your thoughts on how I should go about it now?

For how long
My radiator is cracked in the exact same spot I think that’s why I have a very slow coolant leak
Would normal JB weld work?

My radiator is cracked and I’m planing to fusion weld it with some PLA filament I’ve got from my 3d printer. Since the radiator plastic is nylon I’m a bit concerned about the two not sticking very well so I’m going to cover it with water weld once I’m done for extra support. I’m getting the car ready to sell and a new radiator for it is only $70. I’ll be informing the buyer about it so they can decide what to do about it once it’s theirs.

Nice, to the HomeDepot I go!!
Gonna do this to temporarily fix until I replace my radiator. That way I can drive it until I have the money for the radiator.
Should not be any pressure in the reservoir
Should change ur radiator cap !
just so you guys know the proper repair for this is, you have to take a hot sautering iron and melt the plastic shut then you would put the putty on take as an added layer of protection unfortunateely i bought my car used and alrdy had sealan on it and there was a small pin hole, I patched it up and well see! might take it offer and melt some plastic if its even possible to take this stuff off lol
How did it go I also covered a hole that was half size of a dime ?
